Abstract

The IBM 9337 Disk Array Subsystem is a rack-mounted disk unit that offers 1,084 MB to 33.55 GB of DASD for the AS/400* 9406, Models B, D, E, and F as well as AS/400 Advanced System Models 300, 310, 320, 500, 510, and 530. The 9337 is available in base 0xx models for basic storage and/or system mirroring, in high-availability 1xx models that employ an AS/400 optimized Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID-5) design variation, and also in high-performance 2xx, 4xx, and 5xx models that offer selectable basic storage mode or the high-availability RAID-5 mode. The high-availability storage offered in the 1xx, 2xx, 4xx, and 5xx models eliminate system down time due to a single disk drive failure. Data from a failed disk drive is automatically reconstructed until the disk drive is concurrently replaced. The data for that drive is then restored and the drive put back on line, all while the system continues to operate. The 5xx models of the 9337 include a new controller that includes a 4MB non-volatile write cache, 8MB Data Store, a faster internal microprocessor, faster SCSI interface chips, and performance- optimized microcode. Depending on the characteristics of your application, an improvement in system performance of up to 15% may be realized with the enhanced 5xx models. All 9337 models have dual power cords, redundant power supplies, use high-reliability 3.5-inch disk drives, and offer lower price MB, greater reliability, and higher availability than the previous IBM disk units for the AS/400.

The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem Model 120 is offered in a RAID-5 based high availability configuration with four 970MB disk drives for a minimum 2,912MB of DASD. Up to three #1212 disk drives, with a capacity of 970MB each, may be added for a maximum of 5,822MB of DASD. The implementation of the RAID-5 based design in the high availability configuration provides lower cost per megabyte compared to mirroring and provides better availability and lower demand for CPU resources than system CHECKSUM.

Description

The 9337 offers superior price and performance compared to the 9332, 9335, and 9336 with new and improved reliability and availability features that can reduce or eliminate most of the system downtime caused by failure of a 9337 disk drive or power unit. All models of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem utilize high-reliability disk drives, enhanced predictive error analysis, redundant power, and concurrent maintenance on individual power supplies and individual disk drives.

The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem provides more incremental growth than previous disk drives. The superior volumetric density of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem allows up to 82.6 GB of conventional storage or 70.0 GB of high-availability storage per 9309 rack. Systems of equal storage capacity may be contained in fewer racks than those with 9332, 9335, or 9336 storage units.

The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem can be attached to the 9406 B, D, E, and F models, along with other storage units such as the 9332, 9335, and 9336. The 9337 features 3.5-inch disk drive technology that provides low price per megabyte. The ability to field upgrade enhances investment protection.

ROBUST 9337 FAMILY OF MODELS

The IBM 9337 Disk Array Subsystem offers a broad, adaptable, family of models using 542MB, 970MB or 1967MB disk drives, the original Model 0xx and 1xx controller, plus the newer higher performance Model 2xx, base of High Availability, and the ability to upgrade to meet the capacity, performance, availability, and growth requirements from the low end to the maximum AS/400 9406 configuration.

Investment Protection - Asset Protection

Using the AS/400 Performance Tools, the customer will be able to determine the most economical 9337 initial configuration to provide the specific balance of capacity, performance, granularity and level of protection required. The initial customer investment in the 9337 is sustained by the ability to add capacity, and increase performance by the addition of more drives, up to the maximum configuration.

Investment Protection - Upgradability

Customers with installed 9337 0xx or 1xx models can achieve a significant improvement in system performance by upgrading to the appropriate Model 2xx. For example, customers that are mirroring with 0xx models may find an upgrade to a Model 2xx in High Availability (RAID-5) mode to offer more capacity and higher performance than simply adding capacity to the mirrored configuration. In addition to the performance increase realized in the upgrade from 1xx to 2xx, there is an added capacity increase bonus because the WAD is converted to an additional data disk drive.

Systems Management - Adaptability

As customers understand the advantages of both mirroring and RAID, and as their systems evolve and change, customers will find value in the ability of the 9337 2xx models to be switched between Base (non-RAID) mode and High Availability (RAID-5) mode, and the ability of mixing RAID and mirrored DASD devices in the same Auxiliary Storage Pool (ASP).

INTEGRATED STORAGE FOR THE AS/400

The IBM 9337 Disk Array Subsystem is an integrated part of the overall AS/400 9406 system. Integrated system design allows the most natural, efficient, and cost effective functional and performance trade-offs to be made based on the characteristics of the OS/400 single level store architecture, the customer application and workload requirements, and the AS/400 support structure of services.

Business Solutions - The System

The advantages of the integrated AS/400 system design are most apparent when evaluating the total system value to the customer. Virtually all aspects of customer value are enhanced by a consistent and seamless design compared to a collection of individual elements. The result is low cost design, controlled design process, extensive testing, relevant focus on performance, and a total system approach that maximizes the total system customer value.

Disk Array Subsystem that provides a high availability configuration of four disk drives with user capacity of 727MB each for a minimum capacity of 2,912MB. Capacity can be increased by the addition of up to three Feature #1212 970MB Disk Drives to a maximum capacity to 5,822MB.

Systems Management

The IBM 9337 Model 120 incorporates a design that includes device parity protection based on RAID-5 array techniques. This option offers better availability and lower demand for CPU resources than CHECKSUM protection. The distributed parity scheme provides more efficient disk drive storage utilization than system mirroring. In the event of a disk drive failure, the 9337 Model 120 will continue to operate by automatically reconstructing the data of the failed disk drive from the parity disk drive and other data disk drives. The failed unit of a Model 120 can be replaced without taking the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem and other disk drives offline. When a failed disk drive is replaced and ready to be returned to service, the 9337 Model 120 reconstructs the data for that device as a background operation. Disk drive failure results in some reduction in system performance until it is replaced and the data is reconstructed.

User Productivity

The 9337 offers superior price/performance compared to the 9332, 9335 and 9336 with new and improved reliability and availability features that can reduce or eliminate most of the system downtime caused by failure of a 9337 disk drive or power unit. The Model 120 incorporates a design that prevents data loss in the event of a single disk drive failure. All models of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem utilize high-reliability disk drives, enhanced predictive error analysis, redundant power, and concurrent maintenance on individual power supplies and individual disk drives.

Concurrent maintenance and the high availability provided by the 9337 Model 120 provides economical protection against the cost of system downtime due to a disk unit power supply or disk drive failure.

Growth Enablement

The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem provides more incremental growth than previous disk drives. The base capacity of the Model 120 can be increased in three increments to double the base capacity. Each growth increment of the Model 120 requires a single feature drive compared to a system mirroring configuration which requires two additional drives for the same incremental growth in capacity.

Model Conversions

The 9337 Model 120 may be upgraded to a Model 220.

High Availability 120 Model to 220 Model: Also increases capacity because write assist device is converted to data disk drive. No RESTORE required for conversion to High Availability mode. Model 220 can then be changed to base mode if desired. For AS/400 9406 D,E, and F models only. Corequisite: DASD Controller #6501 on the in the 9406.

A new controller may be installed on 9337 2xx models by ordering feature code #1400 (4xx Controller with 4MB Write Cache). The path for 0xx and 1xx customers to install the new controller must be to order a 2xx MES upgrade AND feature code #1400. Both the 2xx MES upgrade and FC #1400 are net-priced features. Parts removed or replaced become the property of IBM and must be returned.

The 9337 Disk Array Subsystem is a rack mounted disk unit for the AS/400 9406 B, D, E, and F models. It includes redundant power, a controller, and up to seven addressable disk drives. The Model 120 has four disk drives and the ability to add up to three feature disk drives.

All models of the 9337 Disk Array Subsystem have redundant power that consists of three independent power supplies with fault protection/detection and adequate capacity so that in the event of one power supply failure, the remaining two power supplies are capable of supporting continuous and full-function operation of the 9337. Concurrent power supply maintenance allows a failed power supply to be removed and replaced without 9337 or system interruption. The 9337 controller provides four independent disk drive interfaces, a 2MB buffer, command processing and service support. Commands are received and dispatched and data transfer is routed to achieve minimum service time and to allow maximum effective disk drive utilization. The high availability function of the 9337 Model 120 is performed entirely within the 9337 compared to the system CHECKSUM or mirroring alternatives which expand the number of system initiated I/O commands and demand more processor, memory, and IOP resources.

The 9337 high availability models have a write-assist device to reduce the impact on performance that is caused by the necessity to expand each write command to four internal I/O operations. When the 9337 receives a write command, the data is placed in a buffer and also directed to the write-assist device and the command is reported as complete. The write- assist device provides a second copy to the data in the buffer. The controller performs the four internal I/O operations as a background process. The write-assist device minimizes the I/O response time for write operations and the device parity protection function reduces the system resources otherwise required by system CHECKSUM and mirroring. The internal processing and added I/O operations required to support the RAID-5 function reduce the maximum throughput capability of the Model 120 compared to Model 020 with the same number of disk drives.

Limitations

Each AS/400 9406 rack can contain a maximum of six 9337 Disk Array Subsystems.

With AS/400 Operating System 400* (OS/400*) Version 2 Release 2, the 9337 Model 120 cannot be combined with CHECKSUM or mirroring in the same Auxiliary Storage Pool (ASP).

With AS/400 Operating System 400* (OS/400*) Version 2 Release 2 with Feature #1982, the 9337 Model 120 can be mixed with mirroring in the same Auxiliary Storage Pool (ASP).

0xx and 1xx models must be upgraded to a 2xx model PRIOR to installing the 4xx Controller with 4MB Write Cache (#1400).

Hardware Requirements

  • Each 9337 Disk Array Subsystem requires the AS/400 9406 Models D, E, and F to have feature number 6500 for attachment.

  • Each 9337 Disk Array Subsystem requires the AS/400 9406 Model B to have feature number 2611 for attachment
