Overview

Top rule

CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1 enables CICS online applications to be deployed and extended on to any public or private cloud platform of choice. It supports hybrid cloud topology to enable integration across CICS applications deployed in a cloud environment and on-premises deployment with CICS TS, and also TXSeries for Multiplatforms.

CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1enables containerization of CICS online applications by using Docker technology. This makes them portable across cloud platforms. Containerization also enables simplified continuous integration (CI) or continuous delivery (CD) pipeline in DevOps.

Orchestration of CICS TX on Cloud containers can be achieved by using Kubernetes, which is an open-source container-orchestration system. Kubernetes allows elastic scaling, self- healing, automated deployment, and rollback of containerized CICS applications. Kubernetes is a widely accepted technology across multiple cloud vendors.

With CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1, the creation, deployment, and upgrading of application clusters can be achieved easily using Helm charts. Helm is a popular package manager for Kubernetes. One of the key capabilities of Helm is zero-downtime during both upgrades and rollback. This helps during the upgrading of applications, the application of product APARs, and also version-to-version upgrades with minimum business impact.

CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1 provides optimized L7 load balancer capability that efficiently distributes workload in an application cluster.

With CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1, applications that are deployed on a cloud platform can be observed in a cloud-native fashion. Logs from CICS TX application clusters can be centralized and analyzed using elastic stack (often referred to as ELK stack). Key operational metrics are exposed to Prometheus and they can be visualized using Grafana. Both Prometheus and Grafana support an alerting infrastructure that can be controlled to send out alerts on chosen CICS TX on Cloud operational metrics.

CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1 allows the scope of CICS resources to be global across multiple instances of the same region. This enables horizontal scaling of CICS online applications without requiring application changes.

CICS TX on Cloud is built by using the foundational building blocks of time tested and proven transaction runtime IBM TXSeries for Multiplatforms to deliver a cloud native experience to clients.

Description

Top rule

Enterprises are adopting digital transformation to respond to the new imperatives of digital business. Cloud is one of the key elements of digital transformation, delivering agility, flexibility, and on-demand availability to enterprise assets. Though cloud platforms delivers a lot of value, not every application can be moved to cloud because of regulatory reasons and the need for higher quality of service (QoS). A hybrid cloud strategy is emerging as a more popular choice, where cloud-qualified applications are deployed on a cloud platform and integrated with application and data on-premise.

CICS TX on Cloud enables CICS online applications to be deployed and extended on to any public or private cloud platform of choice. CICS TX on Cloud supports hybrid cloud topology, to allow integration across CICS applications deployed in a cloud environment and on-premise, with CICS TS and TXSeries for Multiplatforms.

Deploying containerized workloads and orchestrating them using Kubernetes is widely supported across cloud vendors.

Containerization is a widely accepted technology across multiple cloud vendors. Some of the benefits of containers are:

  • Lightweight footprint and minimal overhead
  • Portability across machines
  • Simplify DevOps practices
  • Speed up continuous integration
  • Enable micro services architectures

CICS TX on Cloud allows containerization of CICS online applications, using Docker technology and orchestration using Kubernetes. With Docker and Kubernetes, enterprises can have a consistent continuous integration (CI) or continuous delivery (CD) DevOps pipeline across their systems of engagement (SoE) and systems of record (SoR) deployments on cloud.

CICS TX on Cloud also delivers cloud native experiences in terms of elastic scaling, log monitoring, metrics monitoring, and alerting, based on a standard set of tooling that is supported across all popular cloud vendors. Logs from CICS TX on Cloud application clusters can be centralized and analyzed using elastic stack. Key operational metrics are exposed to Prometheus and can be visualized using Grafana. Both Prometheus and Grafana support an alerting infrastructure that can be used to send out alerts on chosen CICS TX on Cloud operational metrics.

Horizontal scaling of CICS online applications brings in new challenges when it comes to the scope of CICS resources. Most CICS resources are local to a CICS region by default. This locality causes behavioral changes in applications that are horizontally scaled across multiple instances of the same region in a cloud environment. CICS TX on Cloud supports global CICS resources that will allow the scope of CICS resources to be global across multiple instances of the same CICS region. This expansion of the scope of CICS resources makes CICS applications portable across on-premise and cloud deployment.

CICS TX on Cloud is built using the foundational building blocks of time-tested and proven transaction runtime TXSeries for Multiplatforms to deliver a cloud-native experience to clients. CICS API support is consistent across both TXSeries for Multiplatforms and CICS TX on Cloud. This consistency makes the cloud migration of TXSeries applications seamless.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

CICS TX on Cloud, V10.1 is capable as of July 26, 2019, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. A US Section 508 Accessibility Conformance Statement can be requested on the Product accessibility information website.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

IBM Electronic Services

Top rule

Electronic Service Agent and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to organizations that have IBM Systems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

For additional information, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBMid entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBMid. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.

For more information on how to utilize the power of IBM Electronic Services, contact your IBM Systems Services Representative, or go to the IBM Electronic Support website.
