The capabilities of IBM® Business Process Manager (IBM BPM) on Cloud are expanded with a new option named Premium Availability. This option is designed to handle a client's mission-critical solutions that need a higher level of availability and shorter recovery time to minimize the impact to their business.

  • Builds on the rich high-availability capabilities, which are present in the current cloud service offering that protects against many types of single component failures within a data center, such as a disk or computer board failure, or a software defect that causes an isolated issue.
  • Expands the ability of IBM BPM to protect against more severe problems that affect multiple components, or even the loss of a whole data center that may result from a power outage or loss of connection.

IBM BPM on Cloud is a comprehensive and consumable cloud service that delivers visibility and management of clients' business processes with a ready-to-use, cloud-based environment that is hosted in IBM Cloud™ data centers and managed by IBM. This Software as a Service (SaaS) product includes tooling and runtime components to design and run processes. It provides capabilities to monitor and optimize work that is run within the platform, and is specifically designed to help process owners and business users get started with business process improvement quickly.

Disasters can happen at any time. Clients who rely on automated processes should ensure that they are protected in the event of a disaster, especially for processes that are critical to their business operations. The new Premium Availability option for IBM BPM provides even greater resiliency for Disaster Recovery (DR) and based on their business needs, clients can choose from two DR options:

  • Standard Availability
  • Premium Availability

For DR protection, clients look specifically at their recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). RTO is the maximum length of time clients are willing to wait for the recovery process to end and RPO is the maximum amount of data loss they are willing to lose as measured in time. An increased resiliency, or premium availability, can be achieved by offering a mirror of a clients' production solution in a secondary data center. IBM BPM on Cloud Premium Availability offers an RTO of less than 120 minutes and a RPO of less than 15 minutes.

The DR process is facilitated by having a primary data center for clients' active production solution, and a secondary data center as a backup that mirrors the production solution. The backup data center is strategically located in a different metropolitan area than the primary data center. Data and configuration information is replicated from the primary to the backup instance so that they remain synchronized, with only a potential data loss of minutes. In the event of a disaster, the backup instance is enabled to become the primary, and business operations continue with the same level of capability and capacity until the primary solution can be restored.
