Description
Bottom rule

Content Manager V8.5 builds on its already extensive feature set by providing new features and incremental improvements to retain its enterprise viability and relevance. Better operability with Content Navigator is provided, and retention management support now provides Information Lifecycle Governance capabilities to allow for compliance capabilities throughout the content lifecycle.

Some of the key features of these enhancement areas include:

Retention management (Information Lifecycle Governance)

The retention and expiration of items can now be controlled by defining a policy for retention and expiration and assigning it to item types. Retention can be enabled as fixed-time (retains an item for a finite period of time) or event-driven (retains an item indefinitely until a defined event occurs in an external application). Similarly, expiration can be enabled to automatically delete items (using the IBM Content Manager automatic deletion service) at a fixed or event-driven time. Each policy and item type can have a custom delete schedule. In addition, if certain items need to be retained (for example, as a legal requirement), a hold capability is provided that can protect items to ensure that they cannot be deleted or updated until the hold is removed.

Content Navigator enhancements

Content Navigator provides a collaborative and mobile content experience that delivers better intelligence and control throughout the organization. It can transform the way organizations do business by putting content in motion for optimal value throughout its lifecycle. Content Navigator is a component that can be used with IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition for an enhanced mobile and collaborative content experience.

Content Navigator V2.0.2 is the latest release and included with Content Manager Enterprise Edition. Content Navigator V2.0.2 has improved capabilities in:

Riptide support

Integration for Riptide is now available. Riptide, a proven content delivery system, enables effortless output of disparate content types stored by IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition. Using IBM Content Navigator or Riptide API, output can be directed from Content Manager Enterprise Edition to any number of target output devices, such as print, FTP, email, fax, CD/DVD, LAN, or even back into the Content Manager Enterprise Edition repository. Content can also be reorganized, grouped, and rendered into customized packages. Companies with content and document delivery needs are given the ability to manage the distribution and processing of content stored in Content Manager Enterprise Edition. Riptide is available as a separately purchased offering.

IBM DB2® Enterprise Edition V10.1 support

DB2 Enterprise Edition V10.1 significantly offers increased data protection, scalability, and performance for all its database-intensive operations which, based on IBM DB2 technology, is designed to manage data more effectively and efficiently. Greater availability is delivered through enhancements such as online, automated database reorganization. In addition, the increased scalability and the ability to leverage the latest in server technology helps deliver increased performance of backup and recovery processes.

Resource Manager migration and replication policy enhancements

The Resource Manager's migration policy and replication policy are enhanced in the following ways:

Remote system configuration

With a new deployment mode, a single reference machine and one or more target machines (remote machines with different IP addresses located on the same network) can be designated for the production environment. From the reference machine, the configuration manager can be started to install, configure, and validate features such as the library server and resource manager on any of the target machines. The configuration manager automatically copies the required product files from the reference machine to the corresponding directories on each target machine. The settings for the target machines can also be saved in a profile that can be reused later.

New repository directory precedes the installation directory

Now the Content Manager installation program stores all features in a repository installation directory. These features are not actually installed into the Content Manager directory path until explicitly selected in the configuration manager. Using the configuration manager, the installation files can then be copied or configured from the reference machine repository directory to any distributed target host (local or remote).

IBM Information Integrator for Content features included in installation

IBM Information Integrator for Content is no longer a separate installation image. Any retained features that were previously associated with Information Integrator for Content, such as its connectors and toolkit, are now part of the Content Manager installation process.

DB2 Text Search

IBM DB2 V10.1 has deprecated Net Search Extender with its potential removal in a follow-on release. DB2 V10.1 and above have added support for newer scalable text search and text indexing technology called DB2 Text Search. In IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.5, support for DB2 Text Search technology has been added to enable customers to migrate their text indexes to DB2 Text Search technology over a period of time. While support for Net Search Extender has been deprecated, IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V 8.5 supports co-existence of both DB2 Net Search Extender and DB2 Text Search with a configurable option to allow the choice of the default text search technology. Customers using applications (example: IBM Content Collector, eDiscovery Manager) that rely on Net Search Extender on IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition should continue to use Net Search Extender as the default text search technology and should not switch over to DB2 Text Search until such applications have announced support for DB2 Text Search.

DB2 document constructor plug-in for text search

For users who use DB2 Text Search Technology, Content Manager Enterprise Edition now can deploy a document constructor plug-in into IBM Text Search Server for DB2, from the configuration manager. The document constructor plug-in retrieves and filters content directly from the resource manager (instead of through DB2), and returns it to the IBM Text Search Server for DB2.

Automatic storage table spaces for DB2 Universal Database™

The Content Manager configuration now creates automatic storage table spaces for the library server database and resource manager database instead of DMS (Database Managed Space) or SMS (System Managed Space). All DMS table spaces from Content Manager V8.4.3 can be converted to use automatic storage when upgrading to version 8.5.

Synchronous replication

Synchronous replication is now offered, providing the capability to create and update an item and all its replicas in parallel as a single transaction. Synchronous replication is a process to ensure that replicas for an object are created at the same time as the primary object. This type of replication is required in some regulated industries.

Dynamic TIEREF

In previous versions, Content Manager used resource manager data, such as host name data from the TIEREF input string, to retrieve an object for text indexing. The TIEREF data was captured and stored at the time of object creation. This data was not automatically updated by the system if a resource manager was moved to a different machine or host name, such as moving the resource manager during disaster recovery. With static data stored in the TIEREF input string, text indexing actions could not complete if the TIEREF data became inaccurate. Now the data required to retrieve an object for text indexing is obtained dynamically from the database. The system does not rely on the possibly inaccurate resource manager data saved in a static TIEREF string. The result of this change is that a system can obtain the data needed to locate and retrieve the object for text indexing even after a system failure or resource manager move.

Character validity checking for character and variable character attributes

Character validity checking for character attributes and variable character attributes is provided if these attributes are added to new item types. When these types of attributes are added to a new item type, an option can be selected to enable string character validity checking on the attribute value. When this option is selected, Content Manager checks that the attribute value contains only allowed characters when a client user creates or updates an item.

Event handler toolkit

An event handler toolkit is available to assist with using the general integration capabilities of the event framework. The event handler toolkit, available in Java™, simplifies creating custom event handlers for incorporating business logic into versatile solutions that can enhance existing applications.

Expanded support for the CMBOutsideInExportEngine

In addition to Windows™, the Java Viewer Toolkit now supports the Oracle OutsideInExport engine and Microsoft Office format documents (Word, Excel, HTML, and RTF) on AIX®, Linux™, and Solaris.

Resource manager logging improvements

Support is now provided for context filtering for the resource manager logging facility. Using the system administration client log configuration utility for the resource manager, context filters for order operations and service operations can be defined. During troubleshooting, these context filters can log information for selected operations while filtering out other operations.

SQL performance improvement

Some of the frequently used dynamic SQL statements are improved to use parameter markers for performance improvements.

Microsoft OpenOffice XML File format MIME Type support

Microsoft OpenOffice XML File formats MIME Types are now added into the system by default.

OpenOffice MIME Type support

The following OpenOffice documents with MIME types are supported:

Improvements with the Java Viewer Toolkit

A new document engine is provided to support document conversion on Windows, Linux, AIX, and Solaris of Microsoft Office format documents (Word, Excel, HTML, and RTF). Version 8.5 also extends support of the CMBSnowboundEngine on AIX, Windows, Linux, and Solaris for document rendering and conversion for the following MIME types:

PDF document enhancements are enabled by using the Java Viewer Toolkit

Page manipulation is enabled for PDF documents. This feature allows copying and moving of pages between PDF documents, within a single PDF document, and between TIF and PDF documents. The PDF searchable content of a page remains intact when page manipulation is performed on a searchable PDF. This feature leverages searchable PDF text to provide a consistent user interface for Find and Select Text functions that were added with the OCR enhancement.

Simple ACL inheritance

A new item type option is provided that allows specification of a new default for access control list (ACL) assignment, which is the ACL of the parent folder during create or reindex. This is called the Inheritance of Parent Folder ACL option. This option is specified on the target item type of a reindex operation and is used if the parent folder is provided during item or document creation or reindex. The inherited ACL does not propagate to the children of the item or document through existing links during a reindex operation. Furthermore, updating or reindexing an item to assign it a different ACL does not propagate the ACL to its children.

Enhancement of ACL setting for reindex

The ACL setting for reindex is enhanced with two new options for configuring an assigned ACL to a reindexed item or document. One option is to indicate the default ACL for reindexing an item or document. The other option is an ACL control mode for item reindex to indicate whether the ACL assignment is controlled by the server or the application.

Enhanced transport layer security for communication between library server and resource manager

Communication from the library server to the resource manager can now be configured to use transport layer security; for example, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) or HTTPS protocol. This data communication includes retrieving objects for text indexing, sending encryption-key refresh requests, and sending heartbeat requests.

Support for WebSphere® Application Server database credential encryption

By using a security plug-in in WebSphere Application Server, all library server and resource manager database passwords can be encrypted with a customized algorithm instead of the default BASE64 encoding.

DB2 database encryption on Content Manager

Both the library server database and resource manager database on DB2 can be encrypted using IBM InfoSphere® Guardium® Encryption Expert Version 2.0.

Usage-based license statistics

For usage-based licenses, usage statistics can be gathered and then analyzed by the IBM License Metric Tool (ILMT) for audit readiness. IBM System Dashboard is required to be installed and configured for this feature to be operational.

These key enhancements, along with many incremental improvements in the areas of business continuity, consumability, security, serviceability, performance, and Information Lifecycle Governance, all build upon Content Manager's legendary core repository and content services. The already proven scalable, secure, multi-tiered, and distributed architecture of Content Manager, which provides the base upon which critical enterprise content-enabled applications and enterprise solutions are deployed, is further enhanced and improved. The value of IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition as the basis of an ECM platform and solution environment is further increased with the new features and capabilities of version 8.5.

Upgrade process

Upgrading to Content Manager V8.5 is seamless and easy. There is no migration of existing Content Manager content needed. However, the following upgrade requirements must be met as part of the upgrade process:

PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the Program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server's activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program's License Information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program. For general overview of PVUs for processor families (vendors and brands), go to

http://www-306.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.htm l

The subject programs have a new structure for licensing, designed for clarity and simplicity, while offering the flexibility to configure your systems to best support your business objectives.

User Value Unit (UVU)

UVU is the metric by which this program is licensed. UVU entitlements are based on the number of users for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of UVUs required for your environment as defined by the specific program terms. The UVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with UVU entitlements of another software program. UVU licensing offers price benefits for customers by enabling a lower cost of incremental growth of resources. To understand these benefits of UVU licensing, and to determine how many UVUs to obtain for the program, contact your IBM representative.

A Value Unit is a pricing charge metric for program license entitlements which is based upon the quantity of a specific designated measurement used for a given program. Each program has a designated measurement. The most commonly used designated measurement is a processor core. However, for select programs, there are other designated measurements such as users or resources which may include servers, client devices, and messages. The number of value unit entitlements required for a program depends on how the program is deployed in your environment and must be obtained from a value unit table. You must obtain a PoE for the calculated number of value unit entitlements for your implementation. The value unit entitlements are specific to a program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with Value Unit entitlements of another program.

At all times, the number of users accessing the program or any component of the program in any manner, directly or indirectly (for instance, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) or through any other means must not exceed your entitlement to use the program, as indicated on the applicable PoEs.

Authorized (AUVU): For selectively licensing internal users within your organization. The number of AUVUs (Authorized UVUs) you require is based on the number of authorized users within your organization that may access the program and/or whose user content may be analyzed using the program in any manner at set forth in the Authorized User Value Unit (AUVU) license conversion table.

An Infrequent User means an Authorized User who accesses the Program no more than one hundred twenty (120) times a year. Access is defined as any interaction between the Authorized User and the Program, or any action performed on behalf of the Authorized User by the Program, lasting no more than 15 consecutive minutes.

External (XUVU): For licensing users who are external to your organization whose user content is analyzed using the program. The number of XUVUs (External UVUs) you require is based on the number of external users whose user content may be analyzed using the program in any manner as set forth in the External User Value Unit (XUVU) license conversion table.

Employee (EUVU): For collectively licensing all of your internal users. The number of EUVUs (Employee UVUs) you require will be based on the number of employees in your Enterprise as set forth in the Employee User Value Unit (EUVU) license conversion table.

Enterprise: An Enterprise includes any legal entity that, by more than 50%, owns, is owned by, or is under common ownership with the Licensee. The Licensee is the legal entity that is authorized to execute and administer this agreement on behalf of an enterprise. The Licensee need not be a 'company' and may be the entire enterprise.

Product pricing

Each product has a fixed price per UVU. Customers license the appropriate number of UVUs to provide access to a corresponding user population.

Cumulative volume discounting

As the user quantity increases, the number of UVUs increase albeit at a slower rate. Value Unit License Conversion Tables establish the required number of UVUs for a specified number of users.

Volume discounting examples:

Although the subject programs are now offered under a new, streamlined licensing and pricing model, the function of the products has not changed from that of previously available offerings.

Server

Server is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. A server is a computer system that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications to one or more user or client devices. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for each server regardless of the number of processor cores or partitions in the server on which the program runs or each server managed by the program. Where blade technology is employed, each blade is considered a separate server.

Install

Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program.

Resource Value Unit (RVU)

RVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. RVU entitlements are based on the quantity of a specific designated measurement for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of RVUs required for your environment as defined by the specific program terms. The RVU entitlements are specific to the program and may include, but are not limited to the following: client devices, data source records, messages, and servers, and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program. To understand these benefits of RVU licensing, and to determine how many RVUs to obtain for the program, contact your IBM representative.

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
