Overview

The System x3650 T server is engineered from the start to support telecommunications environments where NEBS compliance is required. This full-function, cost-effective, carrier-grade solution combines Intel® processor technology and Linux™ operating system support to deliver high performance at a fraction of the cost of similar UNIX®-based solutions.

Ideally suited for telecommunications, wireless, and other applications that require dc power, these 2 U high, 20-inch deep rack models provide outstanding function for xSeries® products. Preconfigured with two-way SMP processors, substantial system memory, redundant power supplies, and Ultra320 SCSI HDDs, these servers are ready to handle advanced telco applications.

Performance features

  • Two 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon, 2 MB advanced transfer (full-speed) L2 cache with 800 MHz FSB processors; operations to memory and PCI bus interface at 400 MHz
  • 1 (2 x 512 MB) or 2 (2 x 1 GB) GB of high-speed DDR2 400 MHz memory synchronized to the 800 MHz FSB processor (maximum 16 GB)
  • 64-bit PCI buses that support three, low-profile PCI-X 133 MHz and three full-size 5 V 100 MHz adapters
  • Dual Intel Gigabit Ethernet controllers
  • Dual-channel 100 or 133 MHz Ultra320 SCSI PCI controller (Adaptec 7902W) that supports up to 293 GB3, 10,000 rpm high-speed up to 320 MB/s, low-voltage SCSI (LVDS) internal data storage and external solutions
  • Two 146.8 GB 10,000 rpm Ultra320 SCSI HDD; 52x and 53x models without HDDs

Systems management and serviceability

  • Integrated service processor that controls system power, resets power, and monitors voltages, temperatures, fans, and communication with secondary controllers
  • ECC memory to detect and correct many single-bit memory errors
  • Two 600-watt, -48 V dc, hot-swap, redundant power supplies that support full configurations while providing high availability, or two 600 watt ac, hot swap redundant power supplies
  • Fast and easy to service with activity/status and system fault LEDs on front control panel and diagnostics LEDs throughout the system

Part number 73P2865 contains (2 x 512 MB) DDR2 memory DIMMs.

Part number 73P2866 contains (2 x 1 GB) DDR2 memory DIMMs.

These DIMMs support DDR2 memory interface to processors and PCI bus at 400 MHz.

Telco network applications

The System x3650 T servers use -48 V dc power to meet telecommunications network infrastructure requirements. These 2 U-high, NEBS-compliant servers contain two 470-watt, hot-swap redundant power supplies and excellent system monitoring and control features to meet stringent telco standards for telecommunications equipment.

High-performance server subsystems

These SMP rack servers provide solid performance with two Intel Xeon processors and high-speed, 400 MHz DDR2 ECC memory. They contain two powerful 3.2 GHz Intel Xeon processors, each with 2 MB advanced transfer L2 cache. High-speed, 400 MHz SDRAM is optimized for 800 MHz processor-to-memory subsystem performance.

The System x3650 T server uses the Intel FCPGA chipset to optimize throughput from processors to memory, and to a 64-bit PCI or PCI-X bus. Three low-profile 3.3 V, 66/100 MHz slots and three full-size 5.0 V, 100 MHz slots are supported by the two 64-bit buses.

The System x3650 T server squeezes full function into a 2 U-high, 20-inch deep, 19-inch rack-mounted package. It supports customer installation of adapters, memory, and HDD options. Features include:

  • Six 64-bit PCI adapter card slots:
    • Three full-size 100 MHz slots
    • Three low-profile 133 MHz slots
  • Two 600-watt, -48 V dc or 220V ac, worldwide power supplies that support:
    • Auto restart to minimize operator intervention after temporary power outage
    • Hot-swap, redundant power capability for greater fault tolerance
  • Temperature-controlled fan array to support full configurations:
    • Two 80 x 38 mm fans
    • Two 40 x 28 mm fans
  • Two drive bays supporting up to 293 GB of internal HDD storage:
    • One accessible 5.25-inch, slim-high bay with 24x-10x CD-DVD RW drive

High availability and serviceability features

The System x3650 T delivers excellent reliability and serviceability features:

  • ECC DIMMs combined with an integrated ECC memory controller, correcting many soft and hard single-bit memory errors, while minimizing disruption of service to LAN clients
  • Memory hardware scrubbing, correcting many soft memory errors automatically without software intervention
  • ECC L2 cache processors to improve data integrity and help reduce downtime
  • Dual Intel Gigabit Ethernet controllers that support:
    • Failover; Adapter Fault Tolerance (AFT)
    • PXE 3.0 Boot Agent
    • Load balancing, or teaming
  • Redundant power supplies for 1+1 redundancy
  • An integrated service processor:
    • Controls system power and reset power, and monitors voltages, temperatures, fans, and communication with secondary controllers from remote locations
    • Alerts generated when thresholds are exceeded
  • Front-panel LEDs to give visual indications of system well-being
  • Diagnostic LEDs that point to failing components, helping reduce downtime and service costs (diagnostics located on CD)
  • Easy access to system board, adapter cards, processors, and memory

Compatibility: The System x3650 T server contains licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM into system memory. This BIOS provides instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the System x3650 T server and to maintain compatibility with many current software programs.

Limitations

  • These servers require a -48 to -60 V dc or a 220V ac power source. For cabling specifications and overcurrent protection information, refer to the Cable orders section of this announcement.
  • The maximum combined power capacity for the PCI slots of this product are as follows:
    • Low-profile PCI slots: 30 watts
    • Full-sized PCI slots: 50 watts
  • Installation of a keyboard and mouse at the same time requires a splitter cable.
  • The serial port consists of an RJ-45 connector. A converter cable is required to install 9- or 25-pin serial cable attachments.
  • The System x3650 T standard configuration is NEBS-compliant. For information about obtaining NEBS compliancy for any other configurations, contact your IBM representative.
  • The System x3650 T server contains four configurable USB ports. It can be configured to be operating system-controlled, service processor controlled, or shared between the two. You can set the configuration by changing the header location to which the internal serial cable is plugged. The default location from the factory is in the shared position. In the shared position, the service processor controls the port until the operating system is running, then the operating system takes control. The service processor can regain control of the port for user-configured dial-out situations or if the operating system is not available, but operating system control cannot be reestablished without resetting the server.
  • This server supports a maximum of 16 GB of system memory by adding a 4 GB DIMM in each of the four DIMM slots. All supported system memory is addressable through direct memory access. The System x3650 T supports 512 MB, 1 GB, and 2 GB DDR2 400 ECC SDRAM DIMMs (4 MB DIMM not supported at this time). Supported DIMMs can coexist in the same system; however, due to memory interleaving, memory must be installed in matched pairs. Refer to the Planning information section for supported memory options.

Customer responsibilities: This server must be installed by personnel trained in telco dc wiring installations. Setup instructions are shipped with the system.

Configuration information

Bay configuration

The System x3650 T server contains three drive bays. The top bay on the left contains the standard CD-DVD RW drive. Two 3.5-inch, slim-high bays are located side-by-side from the center to the right side of the server. Each bay contains a 146.8 GB Ultra320 SCSI HDD standard; the 52x and 53x models comes without HDDs.

The 24x-10x EIDE CD-RW is connected to the IDE port.

Internal HDD cabling: HDDs installed in the drive bays are connected to the internal connector of the integrated Ultra320 SCSI controller through a two-drop, 32-bit LVD SCSI cable.

External device attachment: The System x3650 T contains an external .8 mm VHDCI connector to attach supported external SCSI devices to the second channel of the integrated SCSI controller.

Ultra320 SCSI: The Adaptec AIC-7902W controller contains two independent SCSI controllers that share a single 64-bit, 100-MHz PCI-X bus master interface as a multifunction device, packaged in a 456-pin BGA.

Rack installations: The System x3650 T server is a 2 U, rack-mounted server designed to be installed in a two-post, 19-inch rack unit.

Power considerations: These servers include two 600-watt, -48 V dc power supplies that requires a dc power source of -48 to -60 V or 220V ac power source.

Cable orders: The System x3650 T servers requires customer-supplied wiring from a dc power source to the server. The cable size must be 14 AWG and not exceed 3 meters. The power source must have a minimum of 5 A and a maximum of 15 A overcurrent protection. Information pertaining to wiring installation is contained in the installation guide for this product. Article 240 paragraph 3 of the National Electric Code, table 310-16, further describes wiring requirements for this type of equipment.

The dual-Gigabit, full-duplex, Ethernet PCI controllers, standard with this server, are connected directly to independent RJ-45 connectors. The RJ-45 connectors provide a 10BaseT, or 1000Base-TX interface for connecting twisted-pair cable to the Ethernet network. Cabling is not included with the server. To connect the Ethernet controller to a repeater or switch, use a UTP cable with RJ-45 connectors at both ends. For 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps operation, Category 5 cabling must be used. For 10 Mbps operation, Category 3, or better, cabling must be used.

There are no additional cabling requirements, other than for keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections.

Installability: The System x3650 T server requires about 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system, additional adapters, or features.

Security, auditability, and control

Security and auditability features include:

  • Power-on and privileged-access password functions control who has access to the data and server setup program on the server.
  • Set unattended boot mode allows the system keyboard to be locked to all entries except the password and at the same time allows other computers on the network to access the system disk drive.
  • The selectable boot sequence can be used to prevent unauthorized installation of software or removal of data from the diskette drive.

This server is intended to be installed and secured in a rack. Customers are responsible for ensuring that the server and rack installation are secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that provides an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available on the IBM eServer® platform. These services provide the opportunity for greater system availability due to faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: IBM Electronic Services news page and IBM Electronic Service Agent™.

Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your IBM eServer system. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, customer-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent tracks system inventory, hardware error logs, and performance information. If the server is under a current IBM maintenance service agreement or within the IBM warranty period, the Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to provide proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems.

Warranty period

Optional IBM features initially installed in an IBM system carry the same warranty period as the system. If installed after the initial system installation, they carry the balance of the system warranty or the optional feature warranty, whichever is greater.

Warranty service: If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the type of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone or electronically by access to an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. Service levels are response time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.

Customer replaceable unit (CRU) (for example, keyboard, mouse, speaker, memory, hard disk drive) service offered as stated and on-site service for other selected parts.

CRU service: IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM at any time on your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU. Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU, at your request, you will be charged for the installation. You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it at no additional charge under the type of warranty service specified, on-site service.

Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next-business-day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU, and you may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 30 days of your receipt of the replacement.

On-site service: IBM on-site repair (IOR), 9 hours per day, Monday through Friday excluding holidays, NBD response. IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well-lit, and suitable for the purpose. On-site service is not available in all countries, and some countries have kilometer or mileage limitations from an IBM service center. In those locations where on-site service is not available, the normal in-country service delivery is used.

International Warranty Service (IWS): International Warranty Service (IWS) is available during the warranty period to customers who travel or relocate to countries where their computer is sold and serviced by IBM or IBM resellers authorized to perform warranty service. Eligible IBM computers are identified by their four-digit machine type.

You can obtain IWS through the method of service, such as CRU, depot, carry-in, or on-site, provided in the servicing country. Service methods and procedures vary by country, and some service or parts may not be available in all countries. Service centers in certain countries may not be able to service all models of a particular machine type. In addition, some countries may have fees and restrictions that apply at the time of service.

Note: Due to the earth's magnetic field, CRT monitors are manufactured to work in northern, southern, and equatorial regions of the earth and may not produce a satisfactory image when moved between them. Any required adjustment (if possible) is not covered under IWS and may be subject to a chargeable action. The magnetic field does not affect flat-panel LCD monitors.
