Announcement Letter Number 187-041 dated March 17, 1987
US - Last Revised on March 17, 1987

Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

The following no-charge enhancements are announced for the 3720
Communication Controller.  As of June 30, 1987, the 3720
Communication Controller will have the capability to store one
Advanced Communication Function/Network Control Program Version 4
Release 2 (ACF/NCP V4R2) for MVS load module and one ACF/NCP V4R2
dump on the 3720 hard disk.  This support will be available to VM
users on July 31, 1987.  This disk support will improve network
availability, with an automatic restart option, and simplify remote
operations.
As of April 1987, the 3720 will be supported by Non-SNA
Interconnection Release 4 with ACF/NCP V4R2 or ACF/NCP V4 Subset for
MVS.
In addition, the 3720 Models 11 and 12, which support
attachment of IBM Token Ring Networks, will be available on June 30,
1987.
Available immediately are additional software support for the
3720 and longer LIC Type 3 cables.

HIGHLIGHTS
o   New options for 3720 operations
    -   Loading of a single ACF/NCP V4R2 or ACF/NCP Version 4 Subset
load module from the host onto the 3720 disk
    -   Automatic loading of the NCP load module stored on the 3720
disk, at power-on or after failure
    -   Loading of the NCP stored on the 3720 disk at operator
request either from the network console, or from the 3720
local/remote console, or from the 3720 operator panel
    -   Automatic saving of a single NCP storage dump on the 3720
        disk in case of failure
    -   At network operator request, full or partial retrieval of the
NCP dump saved on the 3720 disk for on-line transmission to
        the host
These enhancements improve 3720 network availability and
    simplify remote operations.
o   3720 support by Non-SNA Interconnection Release 4 with NCP V4R2
and NCP V4 Subset in the MVS environment
o   Support for extended cable length on LIC Type 3, especially at
    high speeds
o   3720 support by VM/XA Systems Facility (SF) Release 1 and VM/XA
SF Release 2 in compatibility mode as a 3705
o   Native support of the 3720 by TCAM V2R4 with NCP V4R2
o   IBM 5842 Modem support for access to the remote console and to
    the Remote Support Facility functions
DESCRIPTION
o   New options for 3720 operations
    -   Storing of an ACF/NCP V4R2 or ACF/NCP Version 4 Subset load
module in the 3720.  At the request of the network operator,
the load module is first loaded from the host into the 3720
memory and then automatically saved onto the 3720 disk.  No
ACF/NCP control program can be active during this operation.
    -   Automatic load and dump of NCP.  This option can be
individually assigned to a 3720 by the network operator
during activation of the NCP.  After a power outage, the MOSS
re-IPLs the 3720 with the NCP load module stored on the disk,
without operator intervention. In case of central control
unit failure or software error, a dump of the NCP storage is
automatically saved on the 3720 disk before the re-load
sequence begins. At the completion of the loading, the 3720
notifies the network operator of the outcome of the process:
load successful or not, dump available or not.  In case of an
unsuccessful load, the network operator must initiate an NCP
        load from the host.
    -   Transfer of the NCP dump.  After notification that an NCP
dump has been saved by a 3720, the network operator can
request the on-line retrieval and transmission of dump data
to the host. This transfer may involve the full dump (to be
stored in the host library) or partial dump (to be displayed
at the network console).  The NCP dump stored on the 3720
disk must be retrieved and/or erased by the network operator
before a new NCP dump can be saved on the 3720 disk.
    -   Loading of the NCP from the load module stored on 3720 disk
at operator request either from the network console, or from
the 3720 local/remote console, or from the 3720 operator
        panel.
o   3720 support by Non-SNA Interconnection Release 4 (5668-951)
The Non-SNA Interconnection Licensed Program allows BSC
communications (RJE terminals and host-to-host) to travel on the
SDLC lines of an SNA network, thus reducing communication lines
    costs.
The 3720 is currently supported by Non-SNA Interconnection
    Release 4 with ACF/NCP V4 R1 (MVS/370, MVS/XA, and VSE) and
    ACF/NCP V4 Subset (VSE).
The 3720 is now supported also by Non-SNA Interconnection
    Release 4 with ACF/NCP V4R2 or ACF/NCP V4 Subset in an MVS/370 or
    MVS/XA environment.
o   Support for extended cable length on LIC Type 3
    -   Up to 35 meters (115 feet) for modem attachment at any speed
up to 256Kbps. Cable length was previously limited to 13.5
meters (45 feet) for speeds greater than 64,000 bps.
    -   Up to 100 meters (328 feet) for attachment of the IBM 5821
        DSU/CSU at 56Kbps.
    -   Up to 100 meters (328 feet), instead of 13.5 meters (45
feet), for direct attachment to 3720 or 3725 at 245,760 bps.
These longer cable lengths can be ordered through the
existing procedure (3720 custom-length cables longer than the
    standard length).
o   3720 support on VM/XA Systems Facility (SF) Release 1 and VM/XA
    SF Release 2
The 3720 is supported in compatibility mode as a 3705
dedicated device. As a dedicated device, the 3720 running NCP,
EP, or PEP on the levels of those products identified in IBM
Product Announcement 186-078, dated May 20, 1986 must be attached
to and controlled by a guest virtual machine.
o   Native support of the 3720 by TCAM V2R4
IBM Product Announcement 186-078, dated May 20, 1986
restricted TCAM V2R4 support for the 3720 to LU-LU sessions only.
This restriction no longer applies and TCAM V2R4 can now load,
dump, and own/control SNA resources for the 3720. TCAM V2R4, with
the MSNF feature, can now control the 3720 when using NCP V4R1 or
NCP V4R2 in conjunction with SSP V3R2.  TCAM V2R4 does not
support the NCP V4 Subset on the 3720.
Support of alerts is not provided by TCAM.
Customers running in a TCAM-only environment should
provide a console in order to receive error alerts normally
available at the VTAM operator console.
TCAM V2R4 does not support the 3720 disk enhancements.
o   IBM 5842 Modem support
A 5842 Modem operating at 1200 bps can be used instead of
an IBM 5841 Modem to connect the remote console via the public
switched network or to attach to the RSF port for use by the
Remote Support Facility.  There are no hardware or software
    prerequisites.

PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The PTFs can be obtained by providing the
IBM Support Center the APAR numbers listed under "Software
Requirements" above.  To obtain the prerequisite PTFs prior to their
being distributed on Program Update Tapes, customers should request
that they be placed on the "Interested Parties" list for these PTFs.
The microcode EC A39187 will be installed on all machines shipped on
or after June 30, 1987.  Installed machines will be updated
automatically starting at that date. All installed 3720s should be
updated with this microcode by September 30, 1987.
Customers planning to take advantage of the enhanced NCP
capabilities on a 3720 installed prior to June 30, 1987 should ensure
with their IBM service representative that their schedule is
consistent with the scheduled date for installation of microcode EC
A39187 on their machine.
PROBLEM DETERMINATION: New alarms and alerts will inform the operator
about the automatic NCP dump/load actions of the 3720.  Support for
the new alerts is already available in NetView.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL
User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and

appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.
