Overview

The new PCI-based graphics adapters (POWER GXT110P, GXT500P, GXT550P, and GXT800P) provide outstanding 2D and 3D graphics performance for technical workstations and offer you an exciting new level of 2D and 3D price/performance. The GXT500P, GXT550P, and GXT800P adapters provide native support for the OpenGL and graPHIGS(TM) 3D APIs and additionally support the IBM GL 3.2 and PEX APIs. The POWER GXT250P and GXT255P support the new RS/6000(TM) PowerPC(TM) PCI-based workstations, the RS/6000 43P Series Models 140 and 240, and 7025 Model F40. The GXT110P and GXT250P now support the current RS/6000 Models E20, E30, and F30. IBM also offers the popular GXT1000(TM) integrated into the new Model F40 providing you with a powerful technical workstation in a single package. The IBM 7250 Model 002 POWER GXT1000 is now available on the new Models 140, 240, and F40.

The new entry-level, GXT110P graphics adapter provides you with a low-cost 2D graphics solution for RS/6000 systems. The GXT110P is an 8-bit single-frame buffer adapter that attaches to the RS/6000 workstation through one 32-bit PCI bus slot. It supports display resolutions up to 1280 x 1024 on multisync monitors.

The GXT500P and GXT550P are entry 3D PCI graphics adapters that attach to the 43P Series Models 140 and 240, and 7025 Model F40 via a single 32-bit or 64-bit PCI bus slot. They support display resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768, and allow the display of 16.7 million simultaneous colors.

The GXT800P is a mid-range, 3D PCI graphics adapter that attaches to the 43P 7043 Models 140 and 240, and 7025 Model F40 via a single 32-bit or 64-bit PCI bus slot. The GXT800P requires three slots of space when installed. The GXT800P supports display resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768, and allows the display of 16.7 million simultaneous colors.

Key Prerequisites

The POWER graphics adapters require the following software to be installed:

  • AIX(R) Version 4.1.5 or Windows+ NT 4.0
  • OpenGL and GL 3.2 for AIX, Version 4.1.5 or PEX and PHIGS for AIX, Version 4.1.5
Windows NT 4.0 only supports the 2D GXT110P graphics adapter and does not require the above APIs.

DESCRIPTION



POWER GXT110P Graphics Adapter

The GXT110P is a single-card adapter that attaches to the RS/6000 workstations via a 32-bit PCI bus. It provides a low-cost, entry-performance, 2D graphics offering with resolutions up to 1280 x 1024. It also provides video acceleration features such as scaling and color space conversion. The GXT110P can support multisync monitors having at least a 64KHz horizontal scan capability or DDC-2B-compliant multisync monitors having at least a 38KHz horizontal scan capability. A device driver is available for AIX Version 4.1.5.



POWER GXT250P and GXT255P Graphics Adapters

The GXT250P and GXT255P are 64-bit PCI single-card adapters that attach to the 64-bit or 32-bit PCI I/O interface of the RS/6000 systems. These adapters offer the highest level of 2D graphics performance available on the RS/6000 systems. Additionally, these adapters support the OpenGL, PEX, and graPHIGS* APIs through optional software. These adapters are supported on AIX Version 4.1.5.

The GXT250P Graphics Adapter is a single card that allows the display of 256 simultaneous colors from a palette of approximately 16.7 million colors. It allows you to choose from a wide variety of monitors by supporting monitor resolutions of 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024. Vertical refresh rates are selectable from 60Hz to 85Hz. The GXT250P also supports monitors that comply with Part 3 of the ISO 9241 ergonomic standard.

The GXT255P graphics adapter is a high-end, 2D 8-bit, double-buffer and 24-bit (true) color adapter. This single-card adapter allows the display of approximately 16.7 million colors from a palette of approximately 16.7 million colors.



POWER GXT500P and GXT550P Graphics Adapters

The GXT500P and GXT550P are 32-bit PCI single-card adapters that attach to the RS/6000 43P Series Models 140 and 240 via a 64-bit or 32-bit PCI bus. They provide excellent entry 3D graphics price/performance for the RS/6000 systems.

The GXT500P and GXT550P graphics adapters provide native support for the OpenGL and graPHIGS 3D APIs and additionally support the IBM GL 3.2 and PEX APIs. PEX is supported on the GXT500P and GXT550P through IBM's software implementation and is not accelerated in hardware. The GXT500P and GXT550P provide hardware acceleration for many of the advanced functions found in these 3D APIs including hidden-line and surface removal, antialiasing, Gouraud shading, depth cueing, stenciling, and transparency. Stereo viewing is also supported on the GXT500P and GXT550P. For OpenGL, GL 3.2, and graPHIGS, the GXT500P offers support for 8-bit and 12-bit double-buffered color, and the GXT550P offers support for 8-bit, 12-bit, and 24-bit double-buffered color. For OpenGL and GL 3.2, the GXT500P additionally supports single-buffered support for 24-bit (true) color. Both include a 24-bit Z-buffer and overlay support. These adapters support display resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768, including monitors that comply with the ISO 9241 Part 3 standard and allow the display of 16.7 million simultaneous colors.



POWER GXT800P Graphics Adapter

The GXT800P is a 32-bit PCI single-card adapter that attaches to the RS/6000 43P Series Models 140 and 240 via a 64-bit or 32-bit PCI bus, utilizing three slots of space. It provides outstanding, mid-range 3D graphics performance for the RS/6000 systems, offering an exciting level of 3D price/performance.

The GXT800P graphics adapter provides native support for the OpenGL and graPHIGS 3D APIs and additionally supports the IBM GL 3.2 and PEX APIs. PEX is supported on the GXT800P through IBM's software implementation and is not accelerated in hardware. The GXT800P provides hardware acceleration for many of the advanced functions found in these 3D APIs including hidden-line and surface removal, antialiasing, Gouraud shading, depth cueing, stenciling, and transparency. The GXT800P offers hardware texture support providing improved texture performance when applications take advantage of this graphics feature. Stereo viewing is also supported on the GXT800P. For OpenGL, GL 3.2, and graPHIGS, the GXT800P offers support for 8-bit, 12-bit, and 24-bit double-buffered color. It includes a 24-bit Z-buffer and overlay support. This adapter supports display resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768, including monitors that comply with the ISO 9241 Part 3 standard, and allow the display of 16.7 million simultaneous colors.



POWER GXT1000 Graphics Accelerator

The IBM 7250 Model 002 POWER GXT1000 is a graphics accelerator that attaches externally to the RS/6000 43P Series Models 140 and 240 and 7025 Model F40 via a 64-bit or 32-bit PCI bus. It also is available as an integrated feature of the 7025 Model F40. It provides outstanding advanced 3D graphics performance for the RS/6000 systems, offering an exciting level of 3D graphics.

The GXT1000 graphics accelerator provides native support for the OpenGL, graPHIGS, GL 3.2, and PEX APIs. The GXT1000 provides hardware acceleration for all of the advanced functions found in these 3D APIs including hidden-line and surface removal, antialiasing, Gouraud shading, depth cueing, stenciling, and transparency. The GXT1000 offers hardware texture support and an additional hardware texture option may be added. Stereo viewing is also supported on the GXT1000. For OpenGL, GL 3.2, and graPHIGS, the GXT1000 offers support for 8-bit, 12-bit, and 24-bit double-buffered color. It includes a 24-bit Z-buffer, accumulation, alpha, and overlay support. This adapter supports display resolutions of 1280 x 1024 and 1024 x 768, including monitors that comply with the ISO 9241 Part 3 standard, and allow the display of 16.7 million simultaneous colors.



PRODUCT POSITIONING

The GXT110P graphics adapter is a new, entry-level 2D graphics adapter for RS/6000 system customers. It provides you with a cost-effective, entry-level graphics platform. The GXT110P offers solid entry-level graphics performance supporting resolutions up to 1280 x 1024 on multisync monitors. It also offers video acceleration features such as scaling and color space conversion.

The GXT250P and GXT255P provide you with outstanding 2D graphics for the RS/6000 systems. In addition, the GXT255P provides 24-bit (true) color that allows the display of approximately 16.7 million colors. The GXT250P supports a wide range of monitors with resolutions of 1024 x 768 and 1280 x 1024, at ISO vertical refresh rates selectable from 60Hz to 85Hz. Between the GXT250P and GXT255P, a wide range of your requirements can be met with applications requiring 2D graphics, from 8-bit single buffer to 8-bit double buffer, and from 8-bit color depth to 24-bit color depth. With IBM's optional software implementation of OpenGL, PEX, and PHIGS 3D APIs, these adapters provide you with support for a wide variety of popular 3D applications to meet the needs of entry-level 3D requirements.

The GXT500P and GXT550P provide you with outstanding entry 3D price/performance graphics for the RS/6000 workstations. Coupled with IBM's implementation of the OpenGL, PEX, PHIGS, and IBM GL 3.2 3D APIs, they provide you with support for a wide variety of popular 3D applications.

The GXT500P and GXT550P combine the advantages of using the PowerPC processor to drive the graphics geometry pipeline with the power of the GXT500P and GXT550P raster engines, to provide you with an exceptionally cost-effective platform for entry to mid-range 3D graphics applications. They also support program development in the OpenGL, PEX, PHIGS, and GL 3.2 APIs. The GXT500P and GXT550P further establish IBM's leadership in providing a wide range of product offerings designed for the support of open APIs such as OpenGL. The GXT1000 provides you with an advanced 3D graphics accelerator offering full-geometry acceleration in the graphics hardware. The GXT1000 is an excellent choice for applications requiring the advanced functions that are built into the GXT1000.



PUBLICATIONS

No publications are shipped with these products, except for the installation instructions, which are shipped if the products are ordered as an after-market option.



TECHNICAL INFORMATION



Specified Operating Environment

Operating Environment: Operating environment requirements are consistent with those of the RS/6000 43P Series models and 7025 Model F40.

Certifications

  • UL listed, CSA certified, and TUV approved
  • Graphics adapters meet Class B EMI requirements set by FCC, VCCI, and VDE, except for GXT1000 Internal Graphics Accelerators, feature numbers 7252 and 7253, and GXT1000 Video Output Option, feature number 7254.
Hardware Requirements: These graphics adapters require one available PCI 64-bit or 32-bit slot in the RS/6000 43P Series workstation. The GXT800P requires three slots of space. It is strongly recommended to attach these graphics adapters into 64-bit bus slots or the primary bus slot of the RS/6000 workstation.

Software Requirements: AIX Version 4.1.5 and one or both of the following must be installed on the RS/6000 system unit with 3D graphics adapters:

  • PEX and PHIGS for AIX, Version 4.1.5
  • OpenGL and GL 3.2 for AIX, Version 4.1.5
The APIs are optional for the GXT250P and GXT255P that can utilize Softgraphics.

Windows NT 4.0 is also available for the GXT110P.

Limitations: The GXT500P, GXT550P, and GXT800P are not interchangeable between the RS/6000 Models 140, 240, or F40. A graphics adapter has the same feature number across the models, but the adapter part number is different between the models.



Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities: The customer is responsible for ordering the required hardware and software. These features are customer setup except for the GXT1000 Internal Graphics Accelerators, feature numbers 7252 and 7253, and GXT1000 Video Output Option, feature number 7254.

Cable Orders: No cables are required.



Security, Auditability, and Control

This product uses the security and auditability features of the RS/6000 system to which it is attached.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Feature Section

This product is available for purchase under the terms of the IBM Customer Agreement.

IBM hardware products are manufactured from new parts, or new and used parts. In some cases, the hardware product may not be new and may have been previously installed. Regardless, IBM's warranty terms apply.

MES Discount Applicable: The feature discount will be equal to the discount percent associated with the current volume commitment of the machine type on which it is installed.

Field Installable Feature: Yes

Warranty Period: The warranty period of IBM optional features is one year.
