IBM SPSS Statistics 27 gives organizations a powerful set of tools to plan, forecast, validate assumptions, analyze past performance, and forecast trends.

SPSS Statistics 27 offers new statistical functionality, advances existing procedures and introduces productivity improvements:

  • Functionality added to SPSS Statistics Base Edition previously present in the Bootstrapping Module and Data Preparation Module
  • New Power Analysis and Weighted Kappa procedures
  • Enhancements to Effect Size, MATRIX and Quantile regression procedures
  • Usability and productivity enhancements including the ability to auto-recover files in the event of an unexpected application shutdown, new search capabilities, and output improvements

Deprecations

Support for Microsoft Windows 32-bit edition

Beginning with SPSS Statistics 27, Microsoft Windows 32-bit edition will no longer be supported. IBM recommends that organizations migrate to Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating system.

IBM SPSS Statistics Subscription (5737-B94) build 1.0.0.1327 is the final SPSS Statistics Subscription build to support Microsoft Windows 32-bit edition. IBM recommends that organizations migrate to Microsoft Windows 64-bit operating system.

Support for IBM SPSS Collaborations and Deployment Services

SPSS Statistics 27 will the last release to support SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services.

Support for SPSS Statistics Web Reports File format

Beginning with SPSS Statistics 27, support for SPSS Statistics Web Reports File format (*.spw) is sunset.

SPSS Statistics Base Edition

SPSS Statistics Base Edition includes Bootstrapping Module and Data Preparation Module at no additional cost:

  • Bootstrapping Module enables researchers and analysts to use bootstrapping techniques on parameters estimated in SPSS Statistics 27 modules.
    • This is an efficient way to ensure that models are stable and reliable.
    • With Bootstrapping Module, users can estimate the standard errors and confidence intervals of a population parameter, such as mean, median, proportion, odds ratio, correlation coefficient, regression coefficient, and numerous other parameters.
  • Data Preparation Module provides several procedures that facilitate the data preparation process, enabling users to:
    • Identify suspicious and invalid cases, variables, and data values
    • View patterns of missing data
    • Summarize variable distributions to prepare data ready for analysis
    • Improve accuracy when working with algorithms designed for nominal attributes

Analytical methods

Power analysis

A priori sample size and power analysis can help determine optimum sample sizes so analysts can proceed with the knowledge that they have the right foundation for their project. When data is difficult or expensive to gather, it is important to know how many observations are necessary for an acceptable probability of detecting specified effects. SPSS Statistics 27 introduces the following power analysis procedures to help determine the optimal sample size:

  • One sample t-test (POWER MEANS ONESAMPLE)
  • Paired sample t-test (POWER MEANS RELATED)
  • Independent samples t-test (POWER MEANS INDEPENDENT)
  • One-way ANOVA (POWER ONEWAY ANOVA)

  • Independent sample binomial (POWER PROPORTIONS INDEPENDENT)
  • Pearson correlations (POWER PEARSON ONESAMPLE)

  • Simple and multiple linear regression (POWER UNIVARIATE LINEAR)

All power analysis procedures enable calculation of power for specified sample sizes and sample sizes required to achieve desired power. The power analysis feature includes extensive graphical capabilities for displaying power as a function of effect sizes and sample sizes, including three-dimensional plots displaying power as a function of effect sizes and sample sizes.

Weighted Cohen's kappa

Also known as Cohen's kappa, this analytical method is widely used to summarize inter-rater agreement on an ordinal scale and enables the use of weighting schemes to describe the closeness of agreement between raters. SPSS Statistics 27 provides the following weighted versions of weighted Cohen's kappa, which is appropriate for ordinal rating scales:

  • Linear weighting
  • Quadratic weighting
  • Confidence intervals for all kappa coefficients

Procedure enhancements

Enhancements to the MATRIX procedure:

  • Random variable generation functions to match options available outside MATRIX
  • Probability distribution functions to match options available outside MATRIX

Usability and productivity enhancements

SPSS Statistics 27 introduces usability enhancements that simplify use, save effort, and increase productivity. Features and capabilities:

  • Auto-recovery capability that periodically saves supported document types automatically, enabling the application to restore unsaved files in the event of an unexpected shutdown.
  • Global search feature that simplifies access to help, syntax, and use-case content from online documentation. This new search feature also enables easy access to procedures available in menus.
  • Output enhancements that include improved American Psychological Association (APA) format support, chart editor usability improvements, improvements to output formatting and exportability of output files.
  • Improvements to charting, including support for bubble charts that can add a third dimension to traditional scatter plots.
  • Productivity improvements with open source support, including support for Python 3.8.2, and application installation and license authorization wizard experiences.
  • Access to the latest SPSS Statistics news and content from the SPSS Statistics team through an improved, internet enabled Welcome Dialog Screen.

SPSS Statistics 26

  • Analyze data with powerful new statistics:
    • Estimates the conditional median of the target (dependent) variable by using quantile regression. Essentially, quantile regression is an extension of linear regression and used when clients make no assumptions about the distribution of the residuals. Quantile regression helps them obtain a more comprehensive analysis of the relationship between variables. Also, it tends to resist the influence of outlying observations.
    • Helps users assess the accuracy of model predictions by plotting sensitivity versus (1-specificity) of a classification test by using ROC analysis . The area under the ROC curve or area under the curve (AUC), is a measure of the usefulness of a test in general, where a greater area means a more useful test. ROC curves are widely used in industries that research
      • Psychology
      • Medicine
      • Biometrics
      • Meteorology
      • Model performance assessment
      • Other areas
  • Extend analysis by using advancements to existing procedures and scripting commands
    • Bayesian Statistics is an alternative to standard statistical tests (for example, P-values). Bayesian statistics is becoming popular, because it circumvents the misunderstandings that are brought by standard statistics. Instead of using a p-value to reject or fail to reject a null hypothesis, Bayesian places an uncertainty on parameters and captures all relevant information from observed data. Bayesian Statistics was introduced with SPSS Statistics 25 and now there are new enhancements in this release. In just a few clicks, clients can run:
      • One-way repeated measures ANOVA
      • One sample Binomial
      • One sample Poisson
      • Loglinear models
  • Include enhancements to reliability analysis.
    • Reliability analysis within SPSS Statistics also provides Fleiss Multiple Rater Kappa statistics that assess the interrater agreement to determine the reliability among the various raters. A higher agreement provides more confidence in the ratings that reflect the true circumstance.
  • Exploit enhancements to MATRIX, Mixed Linear Models (MIXED) and Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GENLINMIXED) commands
    • The MATRIX command includes new features:
      • Long variable names (up to 64 bytes) can be used to name a matrix or vector name (such as, COMPUTE, CALL, PRINT, READ, WRITE, GET, SAVE, MGET, MSAVE, DISPLAY, RELEASE, and so on).
      • Variable names that are included in a vector or matrix object are truncated to 8 bytes. This is because the matrix-vector structure is an array of numbers, and each number can match a string only up to 8 bytes. Long names (up to 64 bytes) are supported only when explicitly specified.
      • Long variable names are supported in GET and SAVE commands when explicitly specified on the /VARIABLES subcommand (and when specified on the /STRINGS subcommand for the SAVE command). Variable names for GET and SAVE commands are truncated to 8 bytes when they are referenced through a vector in the /NAMES subcommand.
      • The GET, SAVE, MGET, or MSAVE statements support both dataset references and physical file specifications.
      • MATRIX-END MATRIX now supports statistical functions that were previously only supported by the COMPUTE command (for example, IDF.CHISQ, CDF.NORMAL, NCDF.F, and so on). New Covariance Type structures ARH1 and CSH, Random effects are supported.
  • Use enhanced new features for the Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GENLINMIXED) ) command that include:
    • New Covariance Type structures ARH1 & CSH, Random Effects. The CSH and ARH1 options are added to the /RANDOM subcommand (keyword COVARIANCE_TYPE).
    • New Covariance Type structures ARH1 & CSH, Repeated Effects. The CSH and ARH1 options are added to the /DATA_STRUCTURE subcommand (keyword COVARIANCE_TYPE).
    • Kenward - Roger Degree of Freedom method. The KENWARD_ROGER option is added to the /BUILD_OPTIONS subcommand (keyword DF_METHOD).
    • Kronecker Covariance types. The options UN_AR1, UN_CS, UN_UN are added to the /DATA_STRUCTURE subcommand (keyword COVARIANCE_TYPE).
  • Use enhanced new features for the Mixed Linear Models (MIXED) command that include:
    • DFMETHOD keyword introduced on the CRITERIA subcommand.
    • KRONECKER keyword added to the REPEATED subcommand. The keyword should be used only when COVTYPE is one of three following Kronecker types.
    • UN_AR1, UN_CS, and UN_UN options added to the COVTYPE keyword on the REPEATED subcommand.
  • Save time and effort with productivity enhancements.
    • SPSS Statistics production facility updates to reporting and batch job scheduling without SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services. SPSS Statistics server utilizes the following capabilities of SPSS Collaboration and Deployment Services:
      • Execute jobs. Production facility command line interface to submit job to SPSS Statistics server.
      • Schedule jobs. Task scheduler (Windows) to submit production facility jobs
      • Conditionally execute jobs with INSERT EXEC command.
      • Execute jobs to generate output with INSERT HIDDEN, a server-only feature,

    Enhancements in SPSS Amos 26, which will now allow clients to:

    • Automatically display the output on the path diagram
    • Specify a model without drawing a path diagram through syntax

IBM SPSS Statistics 25

In SPSS Statistics 25, you get to analyze data with some new features within advanced statistics like:

  • GENLINMIXED now provides:
    • Random effects solution results (EBLUPs)
    • Continuous time spatial covariance structures
  • GLM/UNIANOVA now provides:
    • Profile plots with error bars, bar and line charts, and an option to include grand mean option to force charts to include 0 on Y axis
    • New tests for heteroskedasticity, including White's test
    • Robust standard errors
    • Modified versions of Levene's test

Also in SPSS Statistics 25 is support for Bayesian Statistics, which includes both new syntax and GUI elements that are as easy to run as traditional p-value statistics. Some of the features available within Bayesian Statistics include:

  • One Sample and Pair Sample T-tests
  • Binomial Proportion tests
  • Poisson Distribution Analysis
  • Independent Samples T-tests
  • Pairwise Correlation
  • Simple and Multiple Linear Regression
  • Analysis of variance (ANOVA)

In SPSS Statistics 25, you get a redesigned experience when exporting charts to Microsoft Office. With this release, you can copy charts as Microsoft Graphic Objects which allows you to:

  • Copy Chartbuilder output as Microsoft Graphic Objects
  • Manipulate charts as if created in Microsoft Office
  • Apply Microsoft Office chart templates
  • Maintain the ability to paste as pictures

You will also have an added ability to copy and paste data with variable names and labels.

SPSS 25 enables you to build more attractive, modern-looking charts with an improved chartbuilder. With the new Chartbuilder, you will be able to:

  • Display a more accurate preview and allow faster modifications without leaving the Chartbuilder
  • Automatically generate chart titles, and you can specify custom titles without editing
  • Generate a scatter plot with a regression line using new templates
  • Easily specify custom colors and apply templates right in the Chartbuilder
  • Copy charts as either pictures or Microsoft Object Graphic format

With SPSS Statistics 25, there are enhancements to the SPSS Statistics data and syntax editor. New syntax editor improvements can benefit some power users by helping to make writing syntax faster with greater flexibility for editing, cleaning, and managing large syntax files. Some of the new features are:

  • New shortcut keys to speed writing and editing syntax
  • Column mode editing
  • One-click trim of leading, trailing, and empty spaces
  • Large file mode

Additional productivity enhancements include:

  • Data Editor copy/paste enhancements
    • Added ability to copy data with variable names or labels
    • Added ability to paste data with variable labels
  • Accessibility advancements for the visually impaired
  • Updated Merge user interface
    • New simplified Add Variables dialog
  • Simplified toolbars
    • Removed toolbar buttons by default that were infrequently used
    • Added buttons to go to active syntax window, go to active output viewer window
    • Added toolbar button to customize the toolbar
  • Incremental Safenet Sentinel License Manager improvements

With new ground breaking features in SPSS Amos 25, you are now able to:

  • Perform D-separation analyses
  • Read R data files (*.rds and *.RData files) if R is installed
  • Execute Amos from within an R program. (This is similar to the ability to execute Amos from the IBM SPSS Statistics main menu)
  • Click File > File Explorer to show the current path diagram (*.amw) file in Windows File Explorer. If you haven't saved your path diagram yet, File Explorer shows the default folder for saving path diagrams
  • Get your own copy of the example files. A copy of the example files from the User's Guide is placed in each user's Application Data folder. For a user named jim using Amos 25, this folder is located at C:\Users\jim\AppData\Local\AmosDevelopment\Amos\25\Examples
  • Locate important Amos folders through environment variables
  • View list of variables displayed by clicking View > Variables in Dataset which shows additional information about each variable, and allows sorting by variable name and variable label
  • View SPSS Statistics data files (.sav files) in the SPSS Amos View Data window even if SPSS Statistics is not installed

In this release, you can add a new dimension to your advanced analytics by adding location intelligence to reveal much deeper insights. SPSS Statistics 24 provides the value of geospatial analytics by some of its capabilities such as spatio-temporal prediction and generalized spatial association rule through which you can explore the relationship of data elements when tied to a geographic location. In this release, SPSS Statistics 24 contains an improved algorithm for categorical principal component analysis with features such as nonparametric bootstrapping for stabile estimates, clustering of case in addition to variable, new rotation options for better convergence, and an easy way to use continuous variables.

With businesses rapidly evolving, and the need to make quality decisions faster than ever before, SPSS Statistics generates reports which are presentation-ready and lets you make decisions anytime and anywhere. You can view these reports on your smart devices. In this release, SPSS Statistics introduces the next generation of web reports, which are completely redesigned for more interactivity and functionality along with web server support.
