Detailed Description
| This PRPQ will be temporarily offered to demonstrate the VM
| remote restart capability through either of the two following
| management options.
| 1) HMC delivered by a script
| 2) Systems Director/VMControl
| Once the VM Remote Restart capability has been made generally
| available within SD/VMControl then option 2 will be withdrawn
| from this PRPQ.
| Clients that wish to use the VM Remote Restart capability in
| conjunction with VMControl should acquire Director release 6.3.3
| upon general availability either by a new purchase or via SWMA
| upgrade.
This RPQ provides an availability function. When properly
configured, partitions running on a server that goes down
unexpectedly (or even expectedly) can be activated or restarted on
a different (remote) server.
The expectation is that this -Remote Restart- function can be
initiated in most cases quicker than getting the original server
fully powered on and activating the partition on that original
server.
The configuration requirements are similar to those for Partition
Migration. Here are the highlights:
· Any partition you enable for Remote Restart may only be using
virtual I/O. Therefore, both servers must be configured with
fully operational VIOS's.
· Both servers involved must connected to the same SAN through
VIOS's on each server.
· Both servers must be managed by the same HMC.
· There must not be a partition with the same name already running
on the new (target) server.
1. This will be advertised as a -I- listed, Zero cost PRPQ
This would allow targeted customers to try the new remote
restart function that will be available through the Director
VMControl function later in the year.
It will be zero cost but we want to limit the time the scripts
are supported to avoid competing with VMControl.
Naresh Nayar will be PRPQ approver.
2. Documentation
The function is a single script (that provides all the function)
and a white paper.
The white paper will include a description of configuration
(requirements/recommendations) and script usage.
Here is how the distribution of the PRPQ for remote restart function
code:
- Dev will deliver a .zip file to PE. The .zip contains Perl
scripts and a white paper/readme
- Approver will send customer contacts to PE. PE will send the
.zip file via email. PE contacts are Karyn Corneli and
David Dilling.
List allows PE to know what customers are supported
- Dev will update the .zip that PE controls, if any bugs occur.
EMEA/LA ORDERING NOTE:
The feature codes included in this PRPQ are only four digits in
length, as that is the field maximum for the Tool. You will require
a six-digit feature code (VPE2BG).
