OSAM data set encryption

IMS V15.2 is enhanced to support Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM) linear data sets (LDS) as an optional data set format for OSAM databases. Using linear data sets, database administrators can utilize z/OS data set encryption to encrypt OSAM data without changes to applications and without experiencing outages. Programs that access an OSAM database through IMS (online or batch) will continue to work with VSAM linear data sets. Utilities and database recovery control (DBRC) commands have been enhanced to support VSAM linear data sets.

Data privacy for diagnostics support for IMS 64-bit storage

Support for the capability to redact data in client data dumps to protect data privacy in diagnostics.

Requests for certain 64-bit storage objects within IMS are made specifying the IARV64 SENSITVE= parameter to tag the storage as possibly containing or not containing customer sensitive data. Certain areas that can contain sensitive data (for example, Fast Path 64-bit buffers and logger 64-bit buffers) are tagged as sensitive. Other areas that contain only IMS internal control type data (for example, storage tracking elements, internal performance statistics, and resource data) are tagged as not sensitive.

When IMS runs on an IBM z15 processor, or higher, and on z/OS V2.3, or later, with z/OS APARs OA57570 and OA57633, the sensitive or not-sensitive storage tags are included as metadata in System Storage™ SAN Volume Controller (SVC) dumps and stand-alone dumps (SADUMPs) of IMS storage. You can use the z/OS-provided JCL BLSJDPFD in SYS1.SAMPLIB to create a redacted copy of a dump. Storage marked as sensitive is excluded from this copy. Storage marked as not sensitive is included in this copy. See Data Privacy for Diagnostics (DPfD) documentation for additional details.

Passphrase support for IMS Connect API and Universal drivers

An IMS Connect client can enter a password of 1 - 8 characters or a passphrase of 9 - 100 characters which may help IMS clients meeting their internal security requirements.

IMS Connect is enhanced to support 9 - 100 character password phrases for IMS Database clients, and IMS Transaction Manager user-provided clients that are using HWSSMPL0, HWSSMPL1, or equivalent exit routines.

For IMS Database clients, IMS Connect allows passwords or password phrases with up to 100 characters in the existing SECCHK code point. Passwords with lengths up to 8 characters are passed to Resource Access Control Facility or (RACF®) as a password. Password phrases with lengths greater than 8 characters and up to 100 characters will be passed to RACF as a password phrase. IMS Connect will continue to reject any password length greater than 100 characters, and will send message HWSK2855E R=INVPWLN to the client.

For IMS Transaction Manager clients using HWSSMPL0, HWSSMPL1, or equivalent RYO (roll-your-own) exit routines, IMS Connect processes password phrase IRM extensions identified with the PHRASE identifier. As with existing Transaction Manager Resource Adapter (TMRA) client support in the HWSJAVA0 exit, this IRM extension can be used to specify a 9 - 100 character password phrase. The IMS-supplied HWSSMPL0 and HWSSMPL1 exits are enhanced to process the PHRASE IRM extension, and to return the password phrase to IMS Connect.

Capability to import by NAME

An IMS professional (such as an application programmer, database administrator, or system programmer) can selectively import DBDs or PSBs.

IMPORT DEFN SOURCE(CATALOG) command is enhanced to support NAME() keyword to import only specific DBDs and PSBs from the staging directory data set to the active directory data set. One or more DBD or PSB names may be specified, including wildcard names.

NAME() specifies one or more 1 - 8 character names of database DBD or program PSB resources to import from the staging directory to the active directory. Wildcard names can be specified. The name is a repeatable parameter. If the NAME parameter is specified (it can be a specific name or a wildcard name), command responses are returned for all the resource names that are processed. NAME is an optional parameter, and if not specified, it defaults to NAME(*). Duplicate names are ignored. For example, IMPORT DEFN SOURCE(CATALOG) NAME(DB1,DB2*,PSB1,PSB2%%) is a valid combination of DBD or PSB name parameters. When NAME(*) is specified, all of the ACBs in the staging directory are imported. This is equivalent to IMPORT DEFN SOURCE(CATALOG) command with no NAME keyword. If you specify NAME(*), it is not supported with any other NAME parameters.

Import option (NOCHECK)

An IMS professional (such as an application programmer, database administrator, or system programmer) can import DBD changes without having all associated PSBs.

A new OPTION(NOCHECK) is added to IMPORT DEFN SOURCE(CATALOG) command and a new OPTION(NOCHECK) can be used with existing IMPORT DEFN options:

  • Adds support to import database resources with database nonstructural changes that are built by using DFS3UACB utility with BLDPSB=NO or DDL that do not include their associated PSBs for the databases in the IMS Catalog staging directory.
  • Adds support to import database resources with database structural changes to have a minimum of one associated PSB to be included in staging directory when all PSBs are not required to be rebuilt.
  • Adds support to import database resources with database structural changes to bypass catalog directory scan for associated PSBs for the changed databases. The catalog directory scan process can be time-consuming when the catalog directory contains a large number of members.

Reduction of OTMA message processing delays

Applications with heavy OTMA transaction processing have reduced processing delays.

  • A new itask under a new OID TCB processes the following OTMA messages in the shared queues environment:
    • Shared queues notification messages for CM0 IOPCB output messages from back-end IMS
    • Shared queues notification messages for ALTPCB output message from back-end IMS with super member defined
  • Modified TPIPE cleanup process for better throughput:
    • TPIPE hash table is expanded from 127 hash entries to 509 hash entries.
    • The IWAIT for TPIPE cleanup has been reduced.
  • Enhanced TPIPE flood control:
    • MAXTPWN is added to OTMA client descriptor and DFSOTMA descriptor to set the warning level from 50 to 95 for the MAXTP.
    • MAXTPRL is enhanced to set the relief level from 50 to 95.

IMS Universal drivers ByteBuffer enhancement

This enhancement eases open access of IMS database without requiring changes to the IMS database metadata. An application developer can retrieve, insert, and update full unmapped records from an IMS database, enabling the use of the developer's own complex data mapping or schemas and avoiding the need to conform to the specific datatypes that are currently defined to the IMS Catalog.

IMS Universal drivers ArrayResultSet enhancement

This enhancement enables programmatic access of array fields defined in IMS database. An application developer can dynamically retrieve arrays that are less than the minimum and maximum lengths specified in the DBD, limiting the need to deal with NULL array elements and increasing the speed of development.

REXXIMS MAPDEF packed decimal function enhancement

This improvement enhances the IMS adapter REXXIMS to increase the maximum MAPDEF length value to 16 bytes for packed(P) and 32 bytes for zoned(Z). Additionally, the scale (.digit) specification is increased to allow 0 to 31 digits for both P and Z specifications. The scale indicates the number of digits to the right of a decimal point when converting the number. MAPGET and MAPPUT are changed to support the longer P and Z length values, as well as the increased scale of a decimal number.

Member Online Change

This improvement provides the capability to implement non-structural changes to DBD without requiring referencing PSBs.

The INITIATE MOLC command has been enhanced to support the BLDPSBNO keyword to ignore the reference list of PSBs for non-structural updates of DBDs. If the DBD has a structural change MOLC will not be performed if BLSPSBNO is specified and indicate this reason.

For new IMS V15 clients, see the Ordering Information section.

For existing IMS V15 clients that want to move to IMS V15.2, obtain the IMS V15.2 Release Marker PTFs (APAR PH16682 and APAR PH16683) and apply the PTFs as you would any other PTF. Applying the Release Marker PTF requires you to apply all prior maintenance to IMS, and facilitates the enabling of OSAM data set encryption and the disablement of Extended Recovery Facility (XRF).

Disablement of XRF

IMS V15.2 does not support the IMS XRF function. The HSBID and HSBMBR parameters will not take effect if specified as IMS startup parameters or specified in IMS PROCLIB member DFSPBxxx. PROCLIB member DFSHSBxx is not read into the system.

An existing XRF active system is started as a non-XRF system. XRF related commands as shown below are no longer accepted on IMS V15.2, and later:

  • /ERE BACKUP to perform a manual restart of an IMS XRF alternate system
  • /DISPLAY HSB command to display the system-related information in an XRF environment
  • /SWITCH for an active XRF subsystem
  • /SWITCH for an alternate XRF subsystem
  • /START SURV command in an XRF environment to start the operation of the IMS surveillance function
  • /STOP SURV command in an XRF environment to stop the operation of the IMS surveillance function

Migration considerations related to disablement of XRF

In IMS V15.2, IMS XRF is no longer supported. If an IMS V15.1 system was running with XRF active, XRF will no longer be active after migrating to IMS V15.2. If a warm start is attempted for the system that is an IMS V15.1 XRF active system, ABENDU0175 will occur with message DFS0739X ERROR READING IMS LOG RC=1F DDNAME=UNKNOWN LOG. A cold start of the IMS is required after migration. Note that the need to cold start in this case is due to the change from XRF to non-XRF. A non-XRF system can be migrated from IMS V15.1 to IBM V15.2 with a simple warm start.

In the XRF system, access to application databases and logs is through DASD that is shared by the active and the alternate systems. After the IMS release level is upgraded to IMS V15.2, each IMS must have its own log data sets. You can start one IMS only without changing. If you need to start the other system, make sure it has its own log data sets (OLDS, WADS, RDS, and so on).

For any existing IMS V15 client that wants to remain on IMS V15.1, do not apply the IMS V15.2 Release Marker PTF. Clients that remain on IMS V15.1 will not be able to exploit specific IMS V15.2 capabilities until the IMS V15.2 Release Marker PTF is applied. The following list of IMS V15.2 capabilities are enabled or disabled by the IMS V15.2 Release Marker PTF:

  • OSAM data set encryption
  • Disablement of XRF

All other capabilities in this announcement are enabled for IMS Version V15.

Syntax Checker and z/OS Workload Interaction Correlator

Syntax Checker

IMS is stabilizing Syntax Checker. IBM will no longer invest in enhancing this feature and intends to remove the feature from all future product releases.

z/OS Workload Interaction Correlator

With the recent announcement of z/OS Workload Interaction Correlator (zWIC), IBM is delivering an infrastructure to be consumed by both z/OS and middleware exploiters. This synchronized, standardized approach to data generation would enable the capability to dynamically define and correlate disparate client specific performance anomalies without a predefined policy. This correlation capability would help clients implicate or exonerate workload components, where correlated anomalous activities are implicated and nonanomalous activities are exonerated. IMS intends to exploit zWIC's infrastructure to provide data related to IMS activities

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

Sub-capacity charges for AWLC, AEWLC, CMLC, zNALC, VWLC, EWLC, and MWLC products

Sub-capacity charges for eligible products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a sub-capacity product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which the product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period.

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions

IBM Z software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible sub-capacity products apply when z/OS, z/TPF, or z/VSE® is running in z/Architecture (64-bit) mode on an IBM Z, no other MVS™-based, TPF-based, or VSE-based operating system respectively is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the client in accordance with the applicable terms.

Sub-capacity charges for a sub-capacity product are based on the utilization of the LPARs where/when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for sub-capacity products, the client is required to:

  • Sign and abide by the terms of one of the following:
    • Attachment for IBM System z® Advanced Workload License Charges (Z125-8538)
    • Attachment for IBM System z Advanced Entry Workload License Charges (Z125-8755)
    • Attachment for IBM Country Multiplex Pricing (Z126-6965)
    • Attachment for zNALC License Charges on IBM System z (Z125-7454)
    • Attachment for IBM System z Workload License Charges (Z125-6516
    • Attachment for EWLC, TWLC, zELC, and z/OS.e License Charges (Z125-6587)
    • Attachment for IBM System z Midrange Workload License Charges (Z125-7452)
  • Required service will be listed on the IBM Z software pricing website.
  • Collect SMF or SCRT89 data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected data for a period of not less than six months.
  • Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF or SCRT89 data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the sub-capacity products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a sub-capacity product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product-defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected.
  • Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly between the second and ninth day of the month after the reporting period.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all sub-capacity products with complete data for the entire reporting period through the method specified on the IBM Z software pricing website.

Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the client without further action on the client's part, and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease, including the ordering of any necessary new licenses. To discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade, or enable or disable product features, the client must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.

  • Configure the machine to send weekly Transmit System Availability Data (TSAD) to IBM through the IBM Z Remote Support Facility (RSF). If the machine cannot connect through the RSF, provide this TSAD through an alternate means documented in the SCRT Users Guide (SG24-6522) publication on the IBM Z software pricing website.
