Overview

Top rule

IBM® Enterprise PL/I for z/OS® is a leading-edge, z/OS-based compiler that helps clients create and maintain mission-critical, line-of-business PL/I applications that execute on their IBM z/OS systems. The applications, which are created by using Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, can interoperate with IBM CICS®, IBM Db2®, IBM IMS™, and other transactional and data systems.

Enterprise PL/I for z/OS supports the Continuous Delivery (CD) model so that clients receive new features and enhanced capabilities as soon as the code is ready. The CD model enables clients to receive enhancements in a faster and more continuous way without waiting for the next release. In this CD release, new features include:

  • Enhancements to the SQL preprocessor
  • Enhancements and extensions to the RULES and EXIT options
  • Enhancements to the FILEDDWORD function and QUICKSORTX and BINSEARCHX built-ins.
  • Introduction of new attributes VALUELIST and VALUERANGE
  • Introduction of new date/time patterns
  • Introduction of the new VALIDVALUE, REPLACE and MEMREPLACE built-ins.

The CD model for this enterprise-level program reinforces the continuing IBM commitment to the PL/I programming language on the z/OS platform. With the support of the CD model, clients gain the benefit of immediate delivery of new compiler technology and new functions while taking advantage of more than 50 years of IBM experience in PL/I compiler-related and compiler-related development.

Description

Top rule

The CD release includes the following capabilities for Enterprise PL/I for z/OS, V5.2:

  • The SQL preprocessor now supports references by using elements of DEFINE STRUCTURE statements.
  • The new VALUELIST and VALUERANGE attributes limit the set of values that a variable, an argument, or a returned value can have.
  • The new VALIDVALUE built-in function indicates whether the value of an expression matches one of the elements in a variable's value set.
  • The date-time patterns now support DD/MM/YYY and DD/MM/YY.
  • The QUICKSORTX and BINSEARCHX built-in functions now support arrays of structures as arguments.
  • The FILEDDWORD function now supports DSORG as a query.
  • The REPLACE and MEMREPLACE built-in functions are made available.
  • The RULES(NOPADDING) option is enhanced to identify structures with leading and trailing padding.
  • The limit on the size of the EXIT option string is extended from 31 to 1023 characters.

Features that are delivered under the CD model apply primarily to the service stream of the latest active release of the product. Once a new version or release is made available, it becomes the latest service stream that receives CD features. The earlier release reverts back to corrective or preventative service only.

Ordering z/OS through the internet

Shopz provides an easy way to plan and order your z/OS packaged offering. It will analyze your current installation, determine the correct product migration, and present your new configuration based on z/OS. Additional products can also be added to your order (including determination of whether all product requisites are satisfied). Shopz is available in many countries. In countries where Shopz is not available yet, contact your IBM representative (or IBM Business Partner) to handle your order through the traditional IBM ordering process. For more details and availability, go to the Shopz website.

Publications

A publication, Program Directory and Licensed Program Specifications , is supplied automatically with the basic machine-readable material of the base release.

The IBM Enterprise PL/I for z/OS V5.2 documentation library, which includes PDF manuals and online HTML-based production documentation, is updated to document the CD features. No other publications are updated or shipped with CD features.

Only the English documentation is updated for the CD release.

Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.

Customized Offerings

Product deliverables are shipped only through CBPDO and ServerPac. These customized offerings are offered for internet delivery from Shopz. For more details on internet delivery, go to the Help section on the Shopz website.

You choose the delivery method when you order the software. IBM recommends internet delivery. However, if you still require physical media, you can choose DVD.

Many products can be ordered in ServerPac the month following their availability in CBPDO. z/OS can be ordered through CBPDO and ServerPac at general availability. Many products will also be orderable in a Product ServerPac without also having to order the z/OS operating system or subsystem.

Shopz and CFSW will determine the eligibility based on product requisite checking. For more details on the product ServerPac, go to the Help section on the Shopz website.

Production of software product orders will begin on the planned general availability date.

  • CBPDO shipments will begin one week after general availability.
  • ServerPac shipments will begin two weeks after general availability.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
