Rational Developer for System z base capabilities (Available in Version 9.0.1 and prior releases)
Rational Developer for System z is an IDE providing the essential developer-focused capabilities for the IBM Integrated Solution for System z Development. Rational Developer for System z uses industry standards to help simplify the development of rich client interfaces, web user interfaces, traditional terminal interfaces, and back-end business logic deployable to CICS, IMS, DB2, Batch, and z/OS. Rational Developer for System z integrates with existing System z development processes, including problem determination, project management, testing solutions, and System z source management systems.
The Rational Developer for System z development environment can also be combined with the Rational Development and Test Environment for System z, based on the IBM System z Personal Development Tool. The Development and Test environment is designed to enable a virtual System z architecture environment that allows mainframe operating systems, middleware, and software to run unaltered on Intel and Intel-compatible platforms such as a Lenovo laptop or IBM System x® server. No System z mainframe hardware is needed.
Rational Develop for System z offers a wide set of capabilities for the developer:
System z integrated development environment: Provides an interactive, workstation-based environment where you can connect to a mainframe and develop and maintain traditional mainframe applications, web applications, and integrated SOA-based composite applications in COBOL, PL/I, High-Level Assembler, C/C++, JCL, REXX, and Java.
Application structural and quality analysis tools: Helps developers deliver high quality COBOL and PL/I applications in a timely fashion that conform to in-house programming guidelines. Features include control flow diagrams for COBOL programs, identification and highlighting of potential unreachable code, data element tables showing all data elements for a given COBOL or PL/I program, a call hierarchy for showing caller and callee relationships, ability to open called programs from COBOL and PL/I source, and a code review feature allowing you to inspect your code for compliance with rules and best practices. Using the predefined COBOL and PL/I rules and templates, or your own customer written COBOL rules, you can run code review and view result interactively in the Rational Developer for System z workbench or in batch mode on Windows, Linux, or z/OS. Running code review in conjunction with your source control management system or other development processes provides code governance capabilities, as well as the opportunity to improve quality early in your development cycle.
Editor capabilities: COBOL, PLI, and JCL editor support includes improved navigation, content assist and real-time syntax checking, syntax highlighting, hyperlinks for copybooks, and include files, sequence numbers support, hover information for COPY and INCLUDE statements, refresh copybooks and includes when working with remote files, search for occurrences of a given variable, refactoring capabilities, enhanced outline view, JCL template, and open JCL Proc support.
Other System z development and test capabilities:

Authorized User
Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User an may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case, the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.
Floating User Single Install
Floating User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the Program at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the Program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The Program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the Program, the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing the Program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example: via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the Program or that is otherwise managed by the Program is considered a separate User of the Program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.
Benefits
Increased uptime The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.
Security
The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM. The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM.
More accurate reporting
Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.
Customized support
Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at
My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledge base. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
