Announcing the IBM z15

Today's announcement extends the IBM Z position as the industry-leading platform for mission-critical hybrid cloud, with new innovations across security, data privacy, and resilience.

Data privacy and security

Pervasive encryption easily encrypts all data associated with an application, database, or cloud service -- whether on premises or in the cloud, at rest or in flight. The IBM z15 extends this beyond the border of the IBM Z environment.

  • The new IBM Z Data Privacy Passports, in conjunction with IBM z15 and available via an IBM z15 only PID, is being designed to enforce security and privacy protections to data not only on Z, but across platforms. It provides a data-centric security solution that enables data to play an active role in its own protection. For more information about IBM Z Data Privacy Passports V1.0 beta program, see Software Announcement A19-0674, dated September 12, 2019.
  • IBM Z Data Privacy for Diagnostics provides clients with the capability to protect sensitive data that may be included in diagnostic dumps. Now sensitive data can be tagged such that it can be identified in dumps with no impact to dump capture times. Tagged sensitive data in dumps can be secured and redacted before sending to third-party vendors.
  • There is a new Crypto Express7S adapter introduced on the IBM z15 whose design and format have been driven by the adoption of blockchain and other highly secure applications.

Business continuity and resilience

IBM Z is a market leader for uptime and resilience. The new z15 takes this leadership to a whole new level through letting you unlock the power of IBM Z to help you adapt to planned or unplanned events while keeping services and operations running smoothly and continuously, on premises or in the cloud.

  • New IBM System Recovery Boost expedites everything you need to get back ready for workload execution, including planned operating system shutdown processing, operating system IPL (Initial Program Load), middleware/workload restart and recovery, and uniquely the client workload execution that follows helping you catch up for lost time. It will let businesses return their systems to doing normal work faster for scenarios such as planned software maintenance and patching, but also in the event of Disaster Recovery scenarios when you need it the most.
  • Enhancements in GDPS® combined with System Recovery Boost also expedite and streamline the execution of GDPS recovery scripts which perform reconfiguration actions during various planned and unplanned operational scenarios. The combination of these capabilities allows you to plan and test more easily for key activities such as site switches, perform business continuity activities more quickly, and prove ability to comply with industry regulation.

Hybrid cloud readiness

You can build a hybrid cloud ecosystem while ensuring availability, security, and accessibility with flexibility as you deliver timely and efficient new services for your digital business. The IBM z15 server provides the availability required by your most mission-critical workloads and the security demanded by your most valuable data. Then a comprehensive portfolio of IBM solutions help you deploy and support your cloud environment, as well as expand access to it.

  • IBM Z software offerings combine to help you integrate and manage your ideal cloud environment.
    • In September 2019, IBM plans to introduce IBM z/OS® Container Extensions (zCX), which is intended to enable access to a large ecosystem of open source and Linux on IBM Z applications that are planned to be deployed and managed within the native z/OS environment without requiring a separately provisioned and managed Linux server, using popular Docker container skills and patterns. This will allow you to be able to use the latest open source tools, popular NoSQL databases, analytics frameworks, application servers, and so on within your z/OS environment. It is intended that z/OS developers will gain DevOps agility through the use of Docker containers and the ability to deploy open source application development utilities, Linux-based shell environments, and so on.
  • IBM Integrated Accelerator for zEnterprise Data Compression is provided on each processor chip and uses industry-standard compression formats for file compression that can enable reduction in the size of data which can save storage space and increase data transfer rates. It can also reduce CPU consumption and costs associated with moving, processing, encrypting/decrypting, and otherwise manipulating smaller amounts of compressed data. IBM Integrated Accelerator for zEnterprise Data Compression interoperates compatibly with the zEDC compression used on previous IBM Z platforms and with industry-standard compression used on other platforms.
  • Ready for the cloud data center, the IBM z15 is housed in a new standardized 19-inch frame (one to four frames, depending on the configuration) that makes it ready for colocation and standardized facilities management.

IBM DS8000 offers the all-flash IBM DS8900F, built with POWER9 technology to deliver comprehensive next-level cybersecurity, data stability, and system resiliency for mission-critical workloads across hybrid multicloud deployments. The DS8900F family offers two new classes:

  • The flexibility-class DS8910F delivers significant performance improvements as compared to the previous IBM DS8880F generation

IBM DS8910F Model 993 is a rackless flexibility-class solution delivering the following features:

A19-0600 Technology Transition Offerings for the IBM z15 offer price-performance advantages

Complementing the information in Hardware Announcement A19-0283, dated September 12, 2019, for the IBM z15 server, the following is delivered:

  • A new Technology Transition Offering (TTO) called Technology Update Pricing for the z15 (TU7)
  • One new (TC5) and two revised (TC4 and TC3) Transition Charges for Sysplexes or Multiplexes TTOs for actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes (z/OS), Country Multiplexes, and Loosely Coupled Complexes (z/TPF)

Technology Update Pricing for the z15 uses the reporting mechanisms and existing Millions of Service Units per hour (MSU) tiers of the Advanced Workload License Charges (AWLC) or Country Multiplex License Charges (CMLC) pricing metrics while extending the software price-performance provided for the z15.

Four Technology Transition Offerings apply only to eligible z/OS and z/TPF operating systems and their associated middleware programs (see the Programs eligible for AWLC and CMLC section) when running in the following configurations:

  • On a stand-alone z15 server
  • In an aggregated z/OS Parallel Sysplex® or Country Multiplex, referred to as sysplex, with a z15 server
  • In an aggregated z/TPF Loosely Coupled Complex, which is referred to as a complex, with a z15 server

Benefits of Technology Update Pricing for the z15:

  • Reduces AWLC or CMLC pricing on the z15 as compared to AWLC or CMLC on the IBM z14 or z13, IBM zEnterprise® EC12 (zEC12), and IBM zEnterprise 196 (z196) servers with greater than 3 MSUs.
  • Offers sub-capacity or full-capacity implementation.

If you are operating a single, stand-alone z15 server, you may elect Technology Update Pricing for the z15 or Parallel Sysplex License Charges (PSLC) that are subject to all applicable terms and conditions.

If you are operating only z15 servers in an actively coupled z/OS Parallel Sysplex, Country Multiplex, or z/TPF Loosely Coupled Complex, you may elect aggregated Technology Update Pricing for the z15 or aggregated Parallel Sysplex License Charges (PSLC). Both options are subject to all applicable terms and conditions.

Benefits of new and revised Transition Charges for Sysplexes:

  • Offers actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes, Country Multiplexes, and Loosely Coupled Complexes with different generations of server hardware technology partial benefits of Technology Update Pricing for the z15.
  • Offers sub-capacity or full-capacity implementation.

The Transition Charges for Sysplexes or Multiplexes (TC5) program provides a reduction in aggregated AWLC or CMLC as you upgrade to z15 servers within actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes, Country Multiplexes, or Loosely Coupled Complexes with a mix of IBM Z server technologies that include one or more z15 servers with one or more z14 (all models) servers.

The Transition Charges for Sysplexes or Multiplexes (TC4) program provides a reduction in aggregated AWLC or CMLC as you upgrade to z15 servers within actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes, Country Multiplexes, or Loosely Coupled Complexes with a mix of Z server technologies that include one or more z15, z14 (all models), z13, or z13s® servers.

The Transition Charges for Multiplexes (TC3) program provides a reduction in aggregated CMLC as you upgrade to z15 servers within actively coupled Country Multiplexes with a mix of Z server technologies that include one or more z15, z14 (all models), z13, z13s, zEC12, or zBC12 servers

Aggregated Technology Update Pricing for the z15 is not available for actively coupled Parallel Sysplexes, Country Multiplexes, or Loosely Coupled Complexes until all of the servers in the sysplex, multiplex, or complex are upgraded to z15 servers.

The information-rich user interface in IBM Wave helps simplify the administration of virtual resources, monitor, and manage virtual guests, and provision new virtual servers. IBM Wave can help administrators manage z/VM accounts for systems and guests, which includes user profiles and permission settings, by using a centralized management focal point, and can also help with auditing functions. IBM Wave can reduce the time to execute several typical z/VM tasks by up to 80% on average, compared to manual execution.

While not explicitly following the IBM continuous delivery support model, IBM Wave V1.2 uses a delivery method that provides fixpacks on a regular basis. This model:

  • Delivers new functions to address client requirements.
  • Corrects defects.
  • Increases support for Linux distributions and devices.
  • Delivers additional enterprise-grade security and performance enhancements.

IBM Wave brings value to enterprise-grade Linux on IBM Z and Linux ONE solutions that simplify management and administrative functions, such as IBM Infrastructure Suite for z/VM and Linux, which comprises a suite of z/VM and Linux management tools.

As digital technologies advance and the data explosion continues, the risk of security breaches grows. However, organizations have a need to share confidential and important data not only with third parties, but also across internal business units that may not share the same privacy protocols or policies.

To help satisfy this need, IBM introduces IBM Data Privacy Passports. Initially available to a selected group of clients in a beta program, IBM Z takes the next step of the data protection journey on IBM z15 and LinuxONE III servers by extending data protection throughout the enterprise. This protection stays with the data when it is beyond the IBM Z platform and into distributed and hybrid cloud environments. The Data Privacy Passports offering provides a data-centric security solution that will enable data to play an active role in its own protection. These capabilities are designed so that clients can more easily:
