Clients can rapidly deploy, configure, and manage MQ in their data centers, at remote locations, or with business partners. The MQ Appliance M2002 is delivered as M2002A and M2002B models that offer options for different volumes of workload.

MQ Appliance V9.1 firmware is also available for use with earlier models of the MQ Appliance, M2001 and M2000.

MQ V9.1 and the MQ Appliance offer these new and enhanced capabilities:

  • Updated hardware with additional cores
  • Additional storage capacity, with faster access times and a new RAID configuration
  • Additional networking capacity
  • The latest features of MQ V9.1 which includes updates specific to the MQ Appliance and also updates shared with MQ on multiplatforms.

MQ V9.1 on the MQ Appliance delivers a Long Term Support release on the MQ Appliance. Previously, customers who wanted a Long Term Support release were required to use MQ V8 on the MQ Appliance. Clients who deploy MQ V9.1 on the MQ Appliance can deploy fixpacks without new function.

For details on the updates and enhancements in MQ V9.1, see Software Announcement LP18-0303, dated July 3, 2018.

Description

Top rule

The MQ Appliance M2002 is delivered with hardware enhancements and many of the capabilities of MQ V9.1.

With the release of MQ V9.1 on the MQ Appliance, a Long Term Support Release for the MQ Appliance is available to offer clients the option to apply only fixes without functional enhancements. Clients can also apply MQ Appliance V9.1 firmware on the MQ Appliance M2000 or M2001 models.

MQ Appliance M2002 specific hardware enhancements include:

  • Additional storage capacity
    • The M2002A model has four solid state disks (SSDs), each with 3.2 TB of storage, in a RAID 10 configuration. They can be accessed through a new RAID controller. This provides access to approximately 6 TB of usable storage.
    • The M2002B model has approximately 3 TB of usable storage. Clients with the M2002B model can move to the M2002A model by purchasing the M2002B Additional Capacity Option. This allows clients to access the additional storage with no hardware changes.
  • Additional processing capacity
    • The M2002A model has two processors that deliver a total of 24 cores.
    • The M2002B model delivers access to six cores. Clients who purchase the M2002B model can move to the M2002A model by purchasing the M2002B model. This allows clients to access the additional processor cores with no hardware changes.
  • Additional network connectivity
    • The M2002 model is delivered with additional network connectivity options.
      • Six 10GB network ports.
      • Two modules that deliver two 40GB SFP+ network interface modules each, for a total of four 40 GB ports. These ports provide faster connectivity for high availability (HA) replication between appliances. Each module provides 40 GB connectivity in total, from a single port, a split between the 2 ports, or through aggregation of the 2 ports.
      • An additional networking change that removes Fibre Channel adapters that are available in the M2000 and M2001 models.

Multiple enhancements, which are delivered as part of the MQ V9.1, apply both to the MQ Appliance and to MQ software. Not all MQ V9.1 capabilities apply to the MQ Appliance. Capabilities specific to MQ as software are Replicated Data Queue Managers, managed linear logging, and MQ Advanced Identification. Other capabilities, such as the bridges to Salesforce and Blockchain, are deployed separately from the MQ Appliance. MQ Appliance users are entitled to deploy and connect to them.

For information, see Software Announcement LP18-0303, dated July 3, 2018.

A key feature available for MQ users, and also MQ Appliance users, is the MQ Managed File Transfer (MFT) Logger enhancement. This feature is particularly relevant to the MQ Appliance. Previously, the MFT Logger was required to run on the same system as a queue manager. This meant the MQ Appliance could not be the only queue manager in a MQ MFT deployment. In this update, the MFT Logger can be run remotely from a queue manager and can be defined to remotely connect to a queue manager on the MQ Appliance. This removes the need for a separate software queue manager.

The MQ Appliance V9.1 performance is improved by including enhancements that were delivered in the MQ Continuous Delivery releases, Version 9.0.1 through Version 9.0.5:

  • Monitoring and management enhancements
    • MQ V9.1 includes an updated and enhanced MQ Console and support for the MQ REST API for queue manager administration.
    • Includes support for SNMP.
    • Improved management of configuration of storage is available to MQ Appliance queue managers. This is done at creation, but in this release, the storage can be increased, if needed.
  • Availability enhancements
    • MQ V9.1 provides support for Floating IP when MQ Appliances are in a HA group. When a queue manager fails over, a secondary MQ Appliance starts up the HA queue manager with the same IP address as the primary queue manager.
    • Floating IP can use link-aggregated IP interfaces.
    • Additional MQ Appliance configuration options allow for the queue manager to be started at boot time and includes additional tools for backup and restore of configurations.
  • Security additions
    • Additional configuration options for using the MQ Advanced Message Security (AMS) end-to-end encryption feature when using channel interception
    • Enhanced HA Key Renewal for regeneration and exchange of keys
    • Support for role-based administration and LDAP instead of locally defined users
  • Support for access to SAN storage
    • The M2000 and M2001 models of the MQ Appliance include Fibre Channel adapters for access to SAN storage. In MQ Appliance V9.1 firmware, there is support to allow MQ Appliance queue managers to be defined on MQ Appliance storage or SAN storage on these models of the appliance only.
    • The queue manager storage on SAN can be configured for asynchronous replication. This is for Disaster Recovery scenarios, where a queue manager on an MQ Appliance in a remote location can be started up manually to access to the replicated SAN storage in that location.

Note: There is no Fibre Channel adapter on the M2002 model, so this feature cannot be used on the M2002 model MQ Appliance.

Functional deprecations and removals

Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0 is disabled by default for MQ V9.1. TLS 1.2 should be used. TLS 1.0 will be removed in a future release.

Support for access to SAN storage, only available for MQ Appliance M2000 and M2001 is deprecated. No further functional enhancements are planned for this feature.

Microsoft™ Internet Explorer 11 browser support is removed from MQ V9.1. The Microsoft Edge browser is now supported by the MQ Console and Appliance web management interface.
