The IBM z/OS® Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, adds support for provisioning both a CICSplex and multiple containers, by using a composite template that is available in IBM® Cloud Provisioning and Management for z/OS®, V1.2. This latest release of z/OS Provisioning Toolkit includes support for provisioning:

  • A CICSPlex® System Manager (SM) address space (CMAS) and a CICSplex
  • A CICSPlex SM Web User Interface (WUI) server
  • A CMAS, WUI server, and Managed Application Server (MAS) as a single action, by using a composite template
  • A CICS® Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS) region connected to an IBM MQ queue manager as a single action, by using a composite template
  • A z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (EE) instance connected to a CICS TS region as a single action, by using a composite template

Overview

Top rule

IBM z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, builds on the capabilities that were delivered in previous releases, which included the provisioning of connected containers that run different z/OS middleware products and integration with IBM CICSPlex System Manager (SM). Containers can be provisioned across different logical partitions (LPARs) in a sysplex with a single action.

By using templates, which are provided with the toolkit or available separately, clients can provision a complete and connected development environment with a single action. This provisioning is done by using the composite template capability that is available in IBM Cloud Provisioning and Management for z/OS. Clients can configure and add templates for individual z/OS middleware products, such as:

  • IBM CICS Transaction Server for z/OS (CICS TS)
  • IBM MQ
  • IBM z/OS Connect Enterprise Edition (EE)

A new composite template is then created, where the existing templates to be used are named, followed by the order in which they are provisioned and how they are to be connected.

The CICS TS template is enhanced to enable the provisioning of a complete CICSplex, which is comprised of:

  • CICSPlex SM address space (CMAS)
  • CICSPlex SM Web User Interface (WUI) server
  • Managed Application System (MAS)

The CMAS is created as a maintenance point for the newly defined CICSplex. The CICSplex environment can be created as a single action using a composite template.

z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, is fully supported by IBM. It is available to licensees of z/OS V2.1, or later, at no additional charge and can be downloaded directly from IBM.

Description

Top rule

z/OS Provisioning Toolkit can help to reduce the application development lifecycle by enabling systems programmers to give controlled access for developers to standardized development environments. System programmer workload is reduced by using templates that are configured with a simple properties file, to drive the dynamic provisioning process. Application developer productivity is increased by allowing self-service provisioning of a connected middleware environment, by using a simple command line interface, to customize that middleware environment without any interaction from the system programmer. Application developer productivity is further increased by the ability to package all application artifacts as a single image.

z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, delivers support for composite templates, introduced in IBM Cloud Provisioning and Management for z/OS, V1.2. This enables development environments that are comprised of multiple middleware containers to be provisioned with a single command. Provisioning of CICS TS environments is extended to include support for CICSPlex SM. Also, integration with a DevOps pipeline is enhanced with greater control of message output.

Composite templates

A composite template enables a systems programmer to name two or more published templates to be provisioned in sequence, with a single action. Property values from one dynamically provisioned template can be passed to a subsequent template in the composite. This facilitates the creation of an interconnected environment. Clients can define a composite template using the supplied CICS TS and z/OS Connect EE templates and provision a development environment with the z/OS Connect EE server, connected to a CICS TS V5 region using the CICS TS service provider.

CICSplex provisioning

In addition to provisioning an unmanaged region, system management single server (SMSS) region, or MAS region, the CICS template, which is included with z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, can now be used to provision a single CMAS or WUI server. The name of the CICSplex to be created is supplied as a variable when provisioning the CMAS. Multiple WUI servers or MAS regions can be added to the CICSplex during provisioning.

A composite template can be defined that names a CMAS, a WUI server, and a MAS template. When provisioned, either through the z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) web UI or using the zospt command line utility with a suitable image, an entire CICSplex can be created and subsequently removed with a single action.

DevOps enhancements

When using the zospt command line utility, clients can follow the progress of the dynamic provisioning process by viewing the message for each step as it is completed. To make it simpler to drive the process as part of a DevOps pipeline, several commands are enhanced with new options. The name of the container can be supplied instead of being generated so it can more easily be used in subsequent provisioning requests. Additional commands are enhanced to better enable the provisioning process to be driven by a script.

Command Description
run --name The script can set a container name
run --quiet The only output from this command is the provisioned container's name
start | Start one or more containers with a single command
stop | Stop one or more containers with a single command

z/OS Provisioning Toolkit, V1.1, is fully supported by IBM. It is available to licensees of z/OS V2.1, or later, at no additional charge and can be downloaded directly from IBM.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT), containing details about accessibility compliance, can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

z/OS Provisioning Toolkit V1.1 is capable, as of January 26, 2018, when used in accordance with the associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
