Upgrading to z/VSE V6.2 can be done using initial installation or Fast Service Upgrade (FSU). FSU can be used only if upgrading from a z/VSE V6.1 system. Otherwise an initial installation is required.

z/VSE V6.2 offers Midrange Workload License Charge (MWLC) pricing metrics, including a subcapacity option, for the z14, z13, zEC12, and z196 servers. IBM offers Advanced Entry Workload License Charge (AEWLC) pricing metrics, including a subcapacity option, for the z14 Model ZR1, z13s, zBC12, and z114 servers. The entry models (capacity setting A01) of the z14 Model ZR1, z13s, zBC12, and z114 will be priced using zSeries Entry License Charge (zELC) for their IBM monthly license charge software.

With the announcement of the z14 Model ZR1 server, IBM made available a new Technology Transition Offering (TTO) called Technology Update Pricing for the z14 Model ZR1. Technology Update Pricing for the z14 Model ZR1 extends the software price-performance provided by AEWLC for stand-alone z14 Model ZR1 servers. It also applies to the z/VSE operating system and its associated middleware programs. For additional information about software pricing for the z14 Model ZR1 server, refer to Software Announcement LP18-0187, dated April 10, 2018.

Multi-Version Measurement (MVM) for eligible z/VSE software programs provides IBM Z clients with more flexibility for new software deployments and software upgrade cycles. See Software Announcement LP17-0118, dated February 14, 2017.

z/VSE V6.2 enhancements using continuous delivery

z/VSE V6.2 and CICS TS for z/VSE V2.2 have been generally available since December 1, 2017. Additional functionality has been introduced for online transaction processing, security, and connectivity. Clients may now even better integrate z/VSE in a heterogeneous environment using web-based business solutions, and z/VSE connectors.

Together with improved ease-of-use and exploitation of the latest IBM Z and IBM System Storage technology, z/VSE V6.2 may help clients with growing z/VSE workloads, and allows them to better protect their investments in the z/VSE platform.

z/VSE now further extends the capabilities of z/VSE V6.2 with additional enhancements using continuous delivery:

DL/I VSE V1.12.1

  • The new modification level of DL/I VSE introduces a partitioning function for hierarchical direct (HD) databases. The partitioning function allows DL/I applications to transparently handle growing data. Both batch and online applications take advantage of this function. Partitioning of a database allows users to store database records in different sections called partitions. This increases the database storage capacity for one segment type and thus removes the current capacity limit of 4 GB.
  • DL/I VSE V1.12.1 requires z/VSE V6.2 and is available since June 2018. It cannot be used on z/VSE V6.1 or older.
  • DL/l VSE V1.12.0 is still supported on z/VSE V6.2.
  • DL/I VSE V1.12.0 end of service is planned for September 30, 2019.

CICS Explorer V5.5 client

  • A new release of the CICS Explorer V5.5 client is available. It supports connections to the CICS Transaction Server (CICS TS) for z/VSE. The CICS Explorer client provides a system management framework for CICS TS.

IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2

  • IBM TCP/IP for z/VSE V2.2 was updated to the 2.2.5 level with APAR PH05864.

Debug Tool

  • The Debug Tool was updated to support the CICS TS for z/VSE V2.2 release in z/VSE V6.2 with APAR PI75848.

Security enhancement

  • It transparently uses hardware acceleration for Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) if available, for example with a Crypto Express6S on a z14, or z14 Model ZR1.
  • With the general availability of z/VSE V6.2 clients can choose to use OpenSSL for their online and batch applications for enhanced data-at-rest and data-in-flight security.
    • OpenSSL for CICS Web Support gives clients more flexibility and allows them to take advantage of the OpenSSL security.
    • The EZA "Multiplexer" and the EZA OpenSSL support simplify the use of the EZA interface with any TCP/IP stack.

Exploitation of IBM System Storage technology

  • Increased performance using the High Performance FICON for z Systems (zHPF) protocol:
    • The zHPF channel input/output (I/O) architecture is designed to improve the execution of small block I/O requests. z/VSE translates applicable I/O commands into the zHPF protocol and thus transparently exploits the zHPF protocol for user applications. This brings the benefits of IBM Z and IBM System Storage to z/VSE clients. Selected I/O-intensive applications may especially benefit from a FICON Express16S+ on a z14 or z14 Model ZR1, or FICON Express16S on a z13 or z13s with the zHPF protocol and IBM DS8880 storage. z/VSE provides support for both the LPAR and z/VM guest environment. For z/VM guests the appropriate service level is required. The zHPF support is already available with the GA version of z/VSE V6.2.
  • z/VSE V6.1 and later transparently support the DS8882F disk, a member of the IBM DS8880 family. It is designed to take advantage of the space available in the IBM z14 ZR1.
  • z/VSE V6.1 and later transparently support the IBM System Storage TS7700 R4.2.
  • z/VSE allows for the backup of data using ICKDSF FlashCopy while the z/VSE PAV (Parallel Access Volume) support is active, and thus fulfills client requirements. The support is available with z/VSE V6.2 APAR DY47803 and ICKDSF APAR PI99282.

Exploitation of latest IBM z14 and IBM z14 Model ZR1 technology

The support is already available with the general availability version of z/VSE V6.2.

  • Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) with a Crypto Express6S in a z14 or z14 Model ZR1 may result in accelerated data-in-flight encryption.
  • The Vector Facility for z/Architecture of a z14 or z14 Model ZR1, also referred to as Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD), may improve performance and is supported by z/VSE for user applications. The z/VSE support allows user applications to use SIMD instructions and thus fulfills client requirements. When using SIMD instructions in a z/VM guest environment the appropriate z/VM level is required.
  • Features exclusive to z14 and z14 Model ZR1 include:
    • Configurable Crypto Express6S for data encryption and SSL acceleration. z/VSE supports the Crypto Express6S adapter in both IBM Common Cryptographic Architecture (CCA) coprocessor and accelerator mode. It can be used in an LPAR and z/VM guest environment.
    • FICON Express16S+ which supports a link data rate of 16 gigabits per second (Gbps) and autonegotiation to 4 or 8 Gbps for synergy with existing switches, directors, and storage devices. z/VSE transparently supports the FICON Express16S+.
    • OSA-Express6S and OSA-Express7S features - an Ethernet technology refresh. z/VSE transparently supports the OSA-Express6S features as well as the OSA-Express7S 25 GbE short reach (SR) feature.

The IBM z14 and IBM z14 Model ZR1 are also supported by z/VSE V6.1 with PTFs.

z/VSE service

  • z/VSE product and PTF orders from IBM Shopz are no longer delivered on tape. Only internet and DVD delivery are available.
  • IBM recommends that clients apply all PTFs as listed in the Recommended Service Level (RSL). The latest RSLs are shown on the z/VSE Support web page.
  • z/VSE V6.1 end of service is planned for June 30, 2019.
  • z/VSE V6.2 will be the only z/VSE release in service after June 30, 2019.

z/VSE documentation

  • IBM Knowledge Center is the place to go for z/VSE product information and documentation.
  • The following IBM Redbooks® are available for z/VSE:
    • Introduction to the New Mainframe: IBM z/VSE Basics
    • Security on IBM z/VSE
    • Migration to CICS Transaction Server for z/VSE V2
    • z/VSE Using DB2® on Linux® for System z®
