Overview

Top rule

Content Manager Enterprise Edition is a robust, fully featured enterprise content management offering. It enables you to easily manage your growing volume of enterprise content that is required to run your business and to support your document-centric business processes on a variety of operating system platforms such as AIX®, Linux, Windows™, and Linux for System z®. It helps serve your customers, citizens, vendors, and partners more effectively by enabling content collaboration between users internal to your organization as well as users external to your organization.

Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 includes following key enhancements:

  • Security-rich and economical storage on cloud or on premises. With support for IBM Cloud Object Storage, Content Manager Enterprise Edition expands the choice of storage from traditional on-premises file-system-based storage to Object Storage. IBM Cloud Object Storage provides storage that scales beyond petabytes of capacity with improved availability and security, and lower total cost of ownership. IBM Cloud Object Storage is also available to be co-deployed on your premises along with the deployment of Content Manager Enterprise Edition, and does not require use of IBM Spectrum Protect™ (formerly known as IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager).
  • Case insensitive searches and sorting. Searches help you locate documents stored in a repository based on some criteria or search term. Content Manager Enterprise Edition provides full-text indexing and search. It also provides parametric search, which is based on search terms specified on metadata [or document attribute] values. Full text searches have always been case-insensitive. However, queries with parametric searches on attributes containing text values have always been case sensitive. Similarly, after you get the search results, sorting the result set on a specific text-attribute has been case sensitive. Now the search for data and sorting of result set can be case-insensitive. Once the text attributes in an item-type definition are configured with the case-insensitive search option, the search operations and sort operations on those attributes become case insensitive in all your applications, as well as in IBM Content Navigator.
  • Enhanced web-based administration. Content Manager Enterprise Edition typically requires use of desktop system administration application to administer various aspects of the software. In prior versions, a small subset of administrative tasks could be performed through a web-based interface available through a plug-in for IBM Content Navigator. Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 significantly expands the set of administrative tasks that can now be performed by the web-based interface thus permitting administrators to manage instances of Content Manager Enterprise Edition or Content Manager for z/OS remotely or while they are away from their regular work environment.
  • Improved caching of item-type definitions. Java APIs of Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 have been enhanced and now support on-demand caching of the item-type definitions. This helps applications with improved performance and improved memory resource utilization.
  • Included IBM Content Navigator. IBM Content Navigator is the unified ECM experience platform that spans mobile, web, and desktop form factors. It includes features that make it easy to create, share, manage, and collaborate on content by using ECM products, key partner solutions, and third-party content repositories. In addition to being a modern, easy-to-use experience, Content Navigator is a versatile open-standards-based platform designed for building custom ECM applications. IBM Content Navigator is available to users of both IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 and IBM Content Manager for z/OS, V8.6 at no extra cost.
  • Support for clustering file system and journaling file system for users of Red Hat and SUSE Linux. IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 expands the choice of available file systems with support for EXT4 journaling file system and GFS2 clustering file system.

Content Manager Enterprise Edition v 8.6 includes following key enhancements:

  • Secure and economical storage on cloud or on-premises.With support for IBM Cloud Object Storage, Content Manager Enterprise Edition expands the choice of storage from traditional on-premises file-system based storage to Object Storage. IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V 8.6 integrates directly with IBM Cloud Object Storage using S3 interface.
  • Case insensitive searches and sorting. Searches help you locate documents based on some criteria or search term. Text attribute definitions can now be set with case insensitive search setting.
  • Enhanced web-based administration. This helps applications specially those using lots of items types. Such applications would potentially see improved performance and reduced memory consumption.
  • Expanded Linux file system choices. Users deploying Content Manager Enterprise Edition on Linux systems now get added flexibility of using EXT 4 journaling file system or GFS2 clustering file system.

Statement of general direction

Top rule

Deprecation and removal of function

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 does not support Sun Solaris operating system.

IBM Content Navigator V3.0.3 Interim Fix 3 packaged with IBM Content Manager Enterprise EditionV8.6 as well as subsequent releases of IBM Content Navigator do not support applet-based viewer. As various vendors of web browsers have dropped support for applets for security reasons, we recommend use of HTML5-based viewer available in IBM Content Navigator.

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 and IBM Content Manager for z/OS, V8.6 do not include C++ APIs. Java APIs are more widely used and offer comprehensive programmatic interfaces. Apart from Java APIs, users developing custom applications also have a choice of using WebServices interface and CMIS APIs.

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 does not include MS-Tech viewer that was previously available with Java Viewer Toolkit. IBM Content Navigator supports viewing of documents for various MIME types. Users who need to use specific viewer for their applications using Java Viewer Toolkit will need to source such viewer directly. Snowbound engine in the Java viewer tool kit is provided which handles all of the formats MS-Tech viewer handled.

IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition V8.6 does not include integration code for IBM Case Foundation and IBM Case Manager. IBM Case Manager now offers much simplified CMIS-based integration with repositories which does not require integration code that was previously needed.

Note: Event notification framework and Event Monitor of IBM Content Manager Enterprise Edition remain core capability of the IBM Content Manager and continue to be supported.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
