Overview
IBM PowerKVM is an open virtualization solution offered for the Power® scale-out family of Linux only servers built on POWER8 technology. PowerKVM delivers server virtualization based on open source Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) Linux technology. PowerKVM virtualization technology enables you to share real compute, memory, and I/O resources through server virtualization. These virtual resources are used by virtual machines running on the PowerKVM virtualized server.
PowerKVM-based server virtualization enables optimization and the overcommitment of resources like CPU and memory. This can help you achieve superior resource usage, flexibility, and agility, helping to result in cost reduction through economies of scale. With PowerKVM you can move VMs and workloads using live migration without taking application downtime. This can help increase overall availability and flexibility.
The PowerKVM solution uses existing Linux administration skills for virtualization administration and open administration tools like OpenStack to potentially reduce the overall cost of operation and ownership. The PowerKVM product also includes a local graphical virtualization administration tool called Kimchi, which simplifies initial setup and basic virtualization operation.

Additional information
The reliability of the IBM Power Systems starts with components, devices, and subsystems that are designed to be fault-tolerant. IBM Power Systems uses lower voltage technology in the processor SCMs that improves the reliability of stacked latches to reduce soft error (SER) susceptibility. During the design and development process, subsystems go through rigorous verification and integration testing processes. During system manufacturing, systems go through a thorough testing process to help ensure high product quality levels.
The processor and memory subsystem contains a number of features designed to avoid or correct environmentally induced, single-bit, intermittent failures as well as handle solid faults in components, including selective redundancy to tolerate certain faults without requiring an outage or parts replacement.

Socket
Socket is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. A virtual server is either a virtual computer created by partitioning the resources available to a physical server or the unpartitioned physical server. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each Socket on the virtual servers made available to the Program.

Statement of good security practices
IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
