IBM Spectrum Storage Suite is a single software license that entitles you to use any combination of these capabilities to enhance your software-defined storage infrastructure in a way that's best for you and your workloads. Most enterprise IT managers utilize traditional storage with arrays connected to a SAN where traditional workloads like databases, email, and ERP systems house their data. While in most enterprises this type of storage isn't growing as fast as it used to, there is still a lot of efficiency to be gained through using software-defined storage capabilities to improve this capacity.

Many enterprises are already well on their way to building a new environment with storage-rich servers. This is a new kind of storage infrastructure that is characterized by direct-attach JBODs and fields of servers with lots of internal capacity, with really none of it connected to a SAN. It's emerging along with new cloud, analytic, mobile, social, and cognitive workloads. While the storage hardware is significantly different and less expensive, the storage capabilities needed are very similar. This is where software-defined comes in. Today, the total amount of this type of capacity hasn't yet overtaken the traditional capacity in most enterprises, but it's catching up. Analysts have suggested that in 2014, for the first time, enterprises bought more terabytes of storage-rich server capacity than they did of traditional array capacity. By 2018, some expect we'll reach a 60/40 mix in new purchases.

Then there is tape which continues to be the economic workhorse for large scale quantities of data. Where it used to backup workloads driving the data volume, archive workloads have taken the lead in many places.

Whatever your particular infrastructure, it's growing, transitioning, and you probably have a lot of it. Using software-defined storage can help you be efficient and add the capabilities you need to quickly adapt. With IBM Spectrum Storage Suite, we've made it easier to use software-defined storage capabilities with your physical storage infrastructure. Simply count up the terabytes of usable physical infrastructure you want to use with software-defined storage capabilities, and license that much IBM Spectrum Storage Suite. You are then free to deploy any combination of our capabilities that you need to best optimize your environment and to change that deployment as your workloads shift and with licensing on a flat, cost-per-TB basis, your costs are easy to understand and predictable as capacity grows.

With access to all members of the Spectrum Storage family, becoming familiar with new use cases is easier than ever. For example, you may have deployed capabilities into production to help make your block storage SAN environment more efficient, but you are considering deploying new file and object storage using scale-out storage-rich servers, or perhaps a next-generation deduplicated recovery management system. Because you have access to all capabilities from the Spectrum Storage family, you have the ability to perform extended tests in an evaluation sandbox proving ground without additional charge. You may download any combination of entitled Spectrum Storage family software and then deploy it in desired combinations to become familiar with the behavior and operation of the software prior to deploying. Pricing examples

Notes:

  • Existing IBM clients with a single Spectrum Storage family product are accustomed to counting the capacity managed by that product.  For example, if the client is managing 100 TB of SAN storage with Spectrum Virtualize, he would expect to license 100 TB of Spectrum Virtualize.
  • Existing IBM clients with multiple Spectrum Storage family products would expect to repeat that process for each of the products. For example, if the client above who is managing 100 TB of SAN storage with Spectrum Virtualize were also using 200 TB of tiered storage capacity (100 TB on SAN disk and 100 TB on tape) for the primary storage pools of Spectrum Protect, he would expect to also license 200 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite. So, 100 TB of Spectrum Virtualize plus 200 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite.
  • But suppose that the two products were actually overlapping. The 100 TB of SAN storage that is managed with Spectrum Virtualize is also the same 100 TB of SAN storage used as the primary disk tier by Spectrum Protect. If the software is licensed à la carte, that overlap does not affect the licensing at all. The client still licenses 100 TB of Spectrum Virtualize plus 200 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite. However, Spectrum Storage Suite is different. Spectrum Storage Suite licensing is not interested in which products are deployed. It is only interested in how many usable physical terabytes of storage capacity are being software defined. In the case we've just discussed, there is 100 TB of usable physical SAN disk and 100 TB of usable physical tape being managed. So, in this scenario, the client would license 200 TB of Spectrum Storage Suite. With entitlement to that 200 TB, the client is then free to deploy any combination of Spectrum Storage family products required to achieve the desired use case. In this particular case, the client might choose to do any of the following :
    • Deploy Spectrum Virtualize against the 100 TB of SAN storage, and also deploy Spectrum Protect against that same 100 TB of SAN storage as a primary storage pool plus the 100 TB of tape to complete the primary storage pool.
    • Deploy other Spectrum Virtualize features such as Snapshot, Mirroring, or Real-time Compression
    • Deploy other Spectrum Storage products to enhance the management of the disk capacity such as Spectrum Control
  • The key is in the question that is asked. With Spectrum Storage Suite, the question to ask is "How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined?" It has nothing to do with how many or which combinations of products are being deployed. The client has complete freedom to deploy any capability required to accomplish the job.

Sample pricing scenario questions:

  • What if you want to deploy 100 TB of IBM Spectrum Virtualize, IBM Spectrum Control, and IBM Spectrum Virtualize Real-time Compression against one set of SAN disks?
    • How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? In this case there are 100 TB. That's how much Spectrum Storage Suite should be licensed.
  • What if instead, the disks you are deploying IBM Spectrum Virtualize, IBM Spectrum Control, and IBM Spectrum Virtualize Real-time Compression against are the same disks you are using with Spectrum Protect as a primary storage pool, and then you also have 400 TB of tape being used by Spectrum Protect as a primary tape storage pool?
    • How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? In this case there are 100 TB plus 400 TB for a total of 500 TB. That's how much Spectrum Storage Suite should be licensed.  
  • What if you have already licensed 500 TB of Spectrum Storage Suite and are using 100 TB of disk and 400 TB of tape as Spectrum Protect primary storage pools, but want to shift all 500 TB to disk and deploy a combination of Spectrum Protect and Spectrum Scale on that 500 TB of disk as a next-gen, deduplicated recovery management system?
    • How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? It was originally 100 TB disk plus 400 TB tape for a total of 500 TB. Afterwards it is 500 TB of disk. So in this case, the 500 TB of Spectrum Storage Suite remains sufficient. No additional licenses are required.  
  • What if you have 500 TB of disks in storage-rich servers and you want to use half of them as block storage for VMware with Spectrum Accelerate and half as file/object storage with Spectrum Scale while using Spectrum Control to manage all 500 TB?
    • How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? In this case, it is 500 TB. That's how much Spectrum Storage Suite should be licensed.  
  • What if you have 500 TB of Spectrum Storage Suite licensed and have deployed Spectrum Accelerate and Spectrum Control against 500 TB of disks in storage-rich servers, but then decide you would rather have 500 TB of XIV® Gen 3 storage instead of the storage-rich servers?
    • How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? It was originally 500 TB of storage-rich servers, and afterwards it is 500 TB of XIV Gen 3. So in this case, the 500 TB of Spectrum Storage Suite remains sufficient.  

Are there any exceptions to how many usable terabytes of storage are being software defined?

Yes, there are two exceptions specifically around backup and archive use cases:

  1. For any terabytes managed exclusively by Spectrum Protect, only the terabytes that are part of a primary storage pool or used by Spectrum Protect Snapshot are counted. All other storage pool types are not considered in the Spectrum Storage Suite licensing calculation.  
  2. Any terabytes managed exclusively by Spectrum Archive are not considered in the Spectrum Storage Suite licensing calculation.

Evaluation sandbox proving ground

One of the benefits of Spectrum Storage Suite licensing is that clients have access to all Spectrum Storage family products, a comprehensive set of software-defined storage capabilities that cover most every storage task an IT manager would need to accomplish.

  • For both traditional database, email, and ERP workloads, as well as newer analytic, mobile, Big Data, cloud and Cognitive workloads
  • Block, file, and object access
  • Primary data, backup data, and archive data
  • Traditional SAN storage hardware and newer storage-rich server hardware

In practice, IT managers will start with one or more use cases, perhaps improving efficiency of their SAN storage for traditional workloads or creating a next-gen, deduplicated repository for backup copies. Over time they will want to leverage Spectrum Storage Suite to implement additional use cases across more of their storage infrastructure, perhaps a block datastore on storage-rich servers for VMware or high performance, or high-scale file storage on storage-rich servers for analytic workloads. To help facilitate quick adoption of these additional use cases, Spectrum Storage Suite licensing offers the ability to perform extended tests in an evaluation sandbox proving ground without additional charge. You may download any combination of entitled Spectrum Storage family software and then deploy it in desired combinations to software-define an evaluation sandbox proving ground infrastructure for the purpose of becoming familiar with the behavior and operation of the software prior to deploying for production use. 

Other pricing scenarios  

Scenario 1: You want to improve efficiency of block storage SAN infrastructure used for traditional workloads like database, email, and ERP, and you want to leverage both disk and tape tiers as a repository for recovery management backup copies. The storage infrastructure consists of the following usable physical storage:

  • 250 TB of enterprise disk capacity attached to a SAN
  • 400 TB of midrange disk capacity attached to a SAN
  • 100 TB of Flash capacity attached to a SAN
  • 1750 TB of tape capacity

You want to deploy software-defined storage capabilities from Spectrum Virtualize (including snapshot, mirroring, and Real-time Compression), Spectrum Control, and Spectrum Protect, so the following entitlements must be obtained for Spectrum Storage Suite:

How many usable physical terabytes of storage are being software defined? 250+400+100+1750=2500

Per terabyte

Terabyte is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. Proofs of Entitlement are based on the number of terabytes available to the Program (Spectrum Storage Suite). A terabyte is 2 to the 40th power bytes. Licensee must obtain sufficient entitlements required for Licensees environment. The entitlements are specific to the Program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with entitlements of another program (outside of Spectrum Storage Suite). Instead of the entitlements required for the Program directly, Licensee must obtain terabyte entitlements for this Program sufficient to cover the storage managed by the Program. The storage managed is the total allocated size of all volumes managed by the Program.

This includes:

  • Sufficient entitlements required for the total allocated size of all volumes managed by Spectrum Control
  • Sufficient entitlements required for all data stored in Spectrum Protect primary storage pool volumes and for all data managed by Spectrum Protect Snapshot
  • Sufficient entitlements required for the total allocated size of all volumes managed by Spectrum Virtualize
  • Sufficient entitlements required for the total allocated size of all volumes managed by Spectrum Accelerate
  • Sufficient entitlements required for the total allocated size of all volumes managed by Spectrum Scale

When a given terabyte of storage is managed by more than one of Spectrum Control, Spectrum Protect, Spectrum Virtualize, Spectrum Accelerate, or Spectrum Scale, Licensee may count that terabyte only once. This option requires Spectrum Control or Spectrum Protect to be managing the given terabyte in combination with each other or with Spectrum Virtualize, Spectrum Accelerate or Spectrum Scale. In this case, the number reported by Spectrum Control or Spectrum Protect is sufficient.

Terabytes managed by Spectrum Archive are not counted.

In addition, to help facilitate quick adoption of additional use cases, Spectrum Storage Suite licensing offers the ability to perform extended tests in an evaluation sandbox proving ground without additional charge. Terabytes in this sandbox are not counted. Licensee may download any combination of entitled Spectrum Storage family software and then deploy it in desired combinations to software-define an evaluation sandbox proving ground infrastructure for the purpose of becoming familiar with the behavior and operation of the software prior to deploying the use case for productive use.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Software Support Handbook.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program, and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Product upgrades and Technical Support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance by telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, see the IBM Software Support Handbook . Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.

The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledge base. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
