Description

Top rule

IBM Spectrum Protect V8.1.4 delivers the following new capabilities:

Simple and customizable operational reporting in the operations center

A new wizard makes it very easy to generate customized reports enabling you to automatically send details about health and status of Spectrum Protect to administrators and managers. Build specialized reports with selectable stanzas tailored for the people receiving them, such as storage utilization, client backup statistics, and data reduction details.

Easily migrate Spectrum Protect Server Linux on Power from Big Endian to Little Endian

This capability built into Spectrum Protect will guide you to migrate from Linux on Power Big Endian to Linux on Power Little Endian. This migration can be done without moving your backup data, enabling you to simply and quickly move your Spectrum Protect server environment to Linux on Power Little Endian.

Simplified configuration with quicker time-to-value for Data Protection for VMware

When using Data Protection for VMware, new integrated configuration and verification of data movers make it easier than ever to protect your virtual environment infrastructure. The new streamlined user configuration experience launches you into productive use within the vSphere Web Client, quicker than ever before.

Optimized recovery for virtual machines in Data Protection for VMware

When restoring many virtual machines simultaneously, this new capability creates multiple parallel streams (one for each VM) enabling you to restore large environments faster than ever.

New interfaces and easier configuration for Data Protection for Hyper-V

A new Microsoft Management Console (MMC) interface makes it simple to perform backup, recovery, and day-to-day monitoring activities for your Hyper-V environments. There is also a new wizard that simplifies deployment and configuration, enabling you to be protecting your Hyper-V virtual machines quicker than ever. In addition, IBM® introduces new RESTful API and PowerShell interfaces for automation and web portal integration for Data Protection for Hyper-V.

Restore a Microsoft SQL Server database Microsoft VSS backup to an alternate instance

When using VSS to protect your SQL Server databases, you can now restore those SQL Server databases to alternate SQL Server instances.

Automated creation of Microsoft SQL database clones

New PowerShell cmdlets are provided with Spectrum Protect Snapshot for Windows to create, refresh, and delete clones of SQL databases exploiting storage snapshots.

Faster backups and advanced functions for Data Protection for SAP HANA

Enable expiration of backups based on version limits. This gives the backup administrator more control for managing the amount of storage consumed for backups. In addition, you can now send log file backups to separate Spectrum Protect servers in parallel, increasing performance of log file backups.

Better deduplication for Data Protection for SAP with Db2® when using VTLs

Achieve better deduplication to VTL devices when backing up SAP with Db2 through the BACKOM interface. When using the BACKOM interface, Data Protection for SAP with Db2 will pass in the DEDUP_DEVICE parameter telling Db2 that the data being extracted should be optimized for deduplication.

Simplified deployments of Spectrum Protect Snapshot for UNIX and Linux for multiple Oracle instances

When using Spectrum Protect Snapshot for UNIX and Linux in environments with multiple Oracle instances, a single instance of Spectrum Protect Snapshot for UNIX and Linux can now manage the data protection for all Oracle instances.

Incremental FlashCopy® support for Spectrum Protect Snapshot for UNIX and Linux when using dynamic target allocation with IBM Spectrum Virtualize™

When using Spectrum Protect Snapshot for UNIX and Linux with dynamic target allocation in an IBM Spectrum Virtualize environment, you can now leverage the power of incremental FlashCopy. This new feature enables you to optimize your disk usage and performance when leveraging IBM Spectrum Virtualize snapshots.

Improved recovery time objective for partial file system recovery

The IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management command used to recover file systems will now enable directory level recovery with IBM Spectrum Protect for Space Management for UNIX and Linux. The accidental deletion of files in a file system can be recovered faster than before, and the file system can be back in production in a significantly shorter time frame.

Spectrum Protect 8.1.4 Suites include entitlement for Spectrum Protect Plus. Spectrum Protect Plus is measured on a per Managed Virtual Server, or virtual machine (VM), metric. 1 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite or Spectrum Protect Suite Entry entitles a customer to protect 10 VMs with Spectrum Protect Plus. 1 TB of Spectrum Protect Suite - Front End or Spectrum Protect Suite Entry - Front End entitles a customer to protect 15 VMs with Spectrum Protect Plus.

When consuming Spectrum Protect Plus through Spectrum Protect Suite licensing, offload of data from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect Server is included in Spectrum Protect Plus entitlement. In this case, the capacity of the data offloaded is not required to be measured nor does it require additional capacity entitlement.

Example 1:

A customer wishes to purchase Spectrum Protect Suite to protect 2,500 virtual machines (VMs) using Spectrum Protect Plus and 300 TB of non-Spectrum Protect Plus workloads. 1 TB license of Spectrum Protect Suite entitles a customer to protection of 10 VMs, regardless of the amount of data stored on each VM. The customer will need to purchase 550 TB Spectrum Protect Suite.

In this example, the customer has entitlement to offload none, all or some of the data from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect Server for long-term retention with no additional entitlement purchase required.

Workload VMs per TB VMs TB
Spectrum Protect Plus 10 2500 250
Non-Spectrum Protect Plus     300
Total     550

Example 2:

A customer wishes to purchase Spectrum Protect Suite - Front End to protect 3,000 virtual machines (VMs) using Spectrum Protect Plus and 1,000 TB of non-Spectrum Protect Plus workloads. 1 TB license of Spectrum Protect Suite - Front End entitles a customer to protection of 15 VMs, regardless of the amount of data stored on each VM. The customer must purchase 1,200 TB Spectrum Protect Suite - Front End.

In this example, the customer has entitlement to offload none, all or some of the data from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect Server for long-term retention with no additional entitlement purchase required.

Workload VMs per TB VMs TB
Spectrum Protect Plus 15 3000 200
Non-Spectrum Protect Plus     1000
Total     1200

Example 3:

A customer wishes to purchase Spectrum Protect Suite Entry to protect 453 virtual machines (VMs). 1 TB license of Spectrum Protect Suite Entry entitles a customer to protection of 10 VMs, regardless of the amount of data stored on each VM. The customer must purchase 46 TB of Spectrum Protect Plus Suite Entry.

In this example, the customer has entitlement to offload none, all or some of the data from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect Server for long-term retention with no additional entitlement purchase required.

Workload VMs per TB VMs TB
Spectrum Protect Plus Suite Entry 10 453 45.3
Total (rounded up to the nearest whole number)     46

Example 4:

A customer wishes to purchase Spectrum Protect Suite Entry - Front End to protect 300 VM virtual machines (VMs) using Spectrum Protect Plus and 15 TB of non-Spectrum Protect Plus workloads. 1 TB license of Spectrum Protect Suite Entry - Front End entitles a customer to protection of 15 VMs, regardless of the amount of data stored on each VM. The customer must purchase 35 TB Spectrum Protect Suite Entry -- Front End.

In this example, the customer has entitlement to offload none, all or some of the data from Spectrum Protect Plus to Spectrum Protect Server for long-term retention with no additional entitlement purchase required.

Workload VMs per TB VMs TB
Spectrum Protect Plus 15 300 20
Non-Spectrum Protect Plus     15
Total     35

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
