Processor, memory, and I/O enhancements are available for the Power Systems enterprise and scale-out servers:

The Power E880 and E870 servers are enhanced with additional processor, memory, upgrade paths, and I/O options. A 48-core, 4 GHz system node (#EPBD) is added to the Power E880 server, expanding it to a 192-core server. This is in addition to the already announced 32-core system node and its 128-core maximum. Same-serial-number upgrades are announced to allow Power 770 "D model" clients to upgrade to a Power E880 server in addition to the existing Power E870 upgrade option.
The maximum memory capacity of the Power E870 server is doubled to 4 TB per node. The maximum number of PCIe Gen3 I/O Expansion Drawers per system node is doubled on both the Power E870 and E880 servers. The Power E880 server can now support up to 192 PCIe Gen3 slots, and the Power E870 server can support up to 96 PCIe Gen3 slots. Additional PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer configuration flexibility includes a "half" drawer and "single" drawer option.
Power scale-out servers expand the Power System S822 and S822L processor card options, add PCIe Gen3 I/O Expansion Drawers, and add memory and other I/O options. A new 8-core 4.1 GHz processor card (#EPXL/#ELPF) is added to the Power S822 and S822L servers. The maximum memory capacity of the Power S824L server is doubled to 2 TB and the Power S814 server is doubled to 1 TB. The scale-out servers can now attach the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer (#EMX0/#ELMX), increasing their maximum number of PCIe Gen3 slots per system. For example, the Power S822 server can now support up to 8 additional PCIe Gen3 slots, and the Power S824 server can support up to 20 additional PCIe Gen3 slots. The I/O drawer can be configured as a half drawer with six PCIe slots or a full 12-slot drawer.
The 110 V power supply is now available for Power S814 rack-mounted servers without an RPQ. And clients who want to change their existing tower S814 server to a rack-mounted server (or vice versa) can now do so. Also, the Power S824L server now can be ordered without a GPU adapter. The Power S824L server adds support for several PCIe adapters and disk drives, expanding configuration flexibility.
Three new PCIe3 adapters are announced for the POWER8 servers. A 4-port 10Gb Ethernet NIC adapter (#EN15/#EN16/#EN17/#EN18) can save PCIe slots, especially with its SR-IOV capability. A 2-port 56Gb FDR InfiniBand adapter (#EC32/#EC33/#EL3D/#EL50) provides great connectivity. A 2-port 10Gb NIC/RoCE Ethernet adapter (#EC37/#EC38/#EC2M/#EC2N/#EL3X/#EL53/#EL40/#EL54) provides either NIC or RoCE capabilities.
SR-IOV NIC capability is available for the Power scale-out servers, and expanded SR-IOV NIC configuration options are available for the Power E870 and E880 servers. In addition to the existing 4-port (10Gb + 1Gb) NIC/FCoE adapters that have SR-IOV capability, the new 4-port 10Gb Ethernet adapter also supports SR-IOV. SR-IOV provides very efficient virtualization, which is easy to configure and does not require VIOS. SR-IOV can also be combined with VIOS, adding capabilities to both.
A new 10k rpm 1.8 TB disk drive (#ESFS/#ELFT/#ESFT/#ESFU/#ESFV/#ELFV) provides 50% more capacity in the same footprint. And 600 GB and 1.2 TB 10k drives (#ESEU/#ESEV/#ELEV/#ESF4/#ESF5/#ELF5 and #ESF2/#ESF3/#ELF3/#ESF8/#ESF9/#ELF9) with 4k block sizes are introduced to provide more configuration flexibility.
IBM i adds native support for the new 4-port 10Gb Ethernet adapter and native and VIOS support of the FlashSystem 900.
The popular and cost-effective 2-port 10GBase-T adapter (#EN0W/#EN0X/#EL3Z) and 4-port (10Gb + 1Gb) Ethernet adapters (#EN0S/#EN0T/#EN0U/#EN0V) announced originally only on the POWER8 servers are now supported on POWER7+ servers.

Multiple enhancements are available for Power Systems servers.
Power E880 enhancements
A new 48-core system node option (#EPBD) is added to the existing 32-core system node for the Power E880 (9119-MHE) server. One, two, three, or four of the 4.02 GHz 48-core system nodes provides a 48-core, 96-core, 144-core, or 192-core server. All the system nodes in the server must be the same gigahertz and feature number.
Each 5U 48-core system node has 32 CDIMM memory slots providing up to 4 TB of memory capacity and 8 PCIe Gen3 x16 slots providing up to 256 GB of I/O bandwidth. Memory configuration guidelines and supported PCIe configuration options and maximums are identical to the Power E880 32-core system node guidelines and options. Connection from the system node to the system control unit uses special cables ordered using features ECCA (first node), ECCB (second node), ECCC (third node), and ECCD (fourth node).
The 48-core Power E880 system node requires a minimum of 8 cores which must be permanently activated (static activations), just like the 32-core system node minimum. The rest of the cores can use static, mobile, mobile-enabled, Power Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) or remain inactive or use temporary activations. Processor core activation features are:
- 1-core static activation (#EPBM)
- 1-core mobile activation (#EP2T)
- 1-core mobile-enabled activation (#EPBR)
- 4-core Power IFL package (#ELJG)
Temporary Capacity on Demand features are available for the 48-core system node server using:
- 90-day enablement (#EP9T)
- 1-day elastic billing feature using AIX/Linux (#EPJQ)
- 1-day elastic billing feature using IBM i (#EPQR)
- 100-day elastic billing feature using AIX/Linux (#EPJS)
- 100-day elastic billing feature using IBM i (#EPJT)
No-charge elastic processor and memory days are available with the initial system order or with a same-serial-number model upgrade. You can receive 15 processor days and 240 GB days for every active and inactive processor core initially. Order this by using the appropriate quantity of features EPJ5 and EMJ9.
Like the 32-core Power E880 server, same-serial-number upgrades from the Power 780 server are available to the 48-core Power E880 server. Additional feature conversions to the 48-core processor and activation features are announced for this purpose.
Firmware level 8.3, or later, is a prerequisite for the 48-core system node. Customers using AIX on Power E880 systems with greater than 128 activated cores and using either of the following AIX levels must install APAR IV69116:
- AIX Version 7.1 with 7100-03 Technology Level and Service Pack 3
- AIX Version 7.1 with 7100-03 Technology Level and Service Pack 4
Power 770 upgrade to Power E880
Previously, Power 770 (9117-MMD) upgrades to a Power E870 (9119-MME) server were supported. Now Power 770 (9117-MMD) upgrades to a Power E880 (9119-MHE) server are also supported. This gives Power 770 "D model" clients who choose the E880 server additional growth options in processor cores, gigahertz, maximum memory, and maximum I/O. Multiple feature conversions are introduced to provide the underlying ordering capability for this upgrade.
Power E870 enhancements
The Power E870 (9119-MME) server doubles its previous maximum memory capacity by adding support for the 128 GB memory CDMMs (512 GB memory feature (#EM8M)). Filling all memory slots with these CDIMMs provides 4 TB per system node or a maximum of 8 TB in a two-node system. The same memory plugging rules as previously announced for the Power E880 server apply, such as the need for a minimum of 4 CDIMMs per SCM and the need for all CDIMMs on an SCM to be the same capacity. Note that an SCM using the 128 GB DIMMs uses a slightly lower memory channel bandwidth to ease cooling requirements. Firmware level 8.2, or later, is a prerequisite for the 512 GB memory feature.
Power E870/E880 enhancements
The PCIe I/O slot maximum is doubled for both the Power E870 and E880 servers. Previously, a maximum of two PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawers per system node was announced. Now up to four drawers per node can be attached. Using two 6-slot Fan-out Modules per drawer provides a maximum of 48 PCIe slots per system node. With two system nodes, up to 96 PCIe Gen3 slots (8 I/O drawers) are supported. With a 4-node Power E880 server up to 192 PCIe Gen3 slots (16 I/O drawers) are supported. Firmware 8.3, or later, is required to use the doubling of I/O drawers.
Additional PCIe I/O drawer configuration flexibility is provided to the Power E870 and E880 servers. Previously, only zero or two PCIe I/O drawers could be attached to a system node. Now zero, one, two, three, or four PCIe I/O drawers can be attached per system node. Plus a "half" drawer consisting of just one PCIe fan-out module in the I/O drawer is also supported, allowing a lower-cost configuration if fewer PCIe slots are required. Thus a system node supports the following half drawer options: one half drawer, two half drawers, three half drawers, or four half drawers. Because there is a maximum of four EMX0 drawers per node, a single system node cannot have more than four half drawers. A server with more system nodes can support more half drawers up to four per node. A system can also mix half drawers and full PCIe Gen3 I/O drawers. The maximum of four PCIe Gen3 drawers per system node applies whether a full or half PCIe drawer.
Drawers can be added to the server at a later time, but system downtime must be scheduled for adding a PCIe3 Optical Cable Adapter or a PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer (#EMX0) or fan-out module (#EMXF).
An additional 20-meter AOC cable (#ECC9) is announced for the Power E870 and E880 servers, providing additional cabling and distance flexibility.
The number of PCIe adapters supported in the Power E870/E880 system node is more than doubled. This provides additional configuration flexibility. The following additional adapters, which had been previously announced on other servers, are now supported in the system node:

The first eight adapters above were listed in an October 2014 statement of direction (SOD). This SOD listed 10 low-profile adapters; however, IBM no longer plans to announce support of the following two low-profile Ethernet adapters in the Power E870/E880 system node:
- PCIe LP 10GbE SR 1-port Adapter (#5275)
- PCIe2 LP 4-Port 10GbE&1GbE SR&RJ45 Adapter (#5280)
Thus the combination of the above eight newly supported adapters plus the two adapters that will not be supported reflect the modified completion of the SOD. Note that these two low-profile adapters that will not be supported have equivalent full-high adapters which are supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O Expansion Drawer.
In addition to the above adapters being supported, two new PCIe3 adapters are supported in the system node. These are a 4-port 10Gb Ethernet (#EN16/#EN18) adapter and a 2-port 10Gb Ethernet (#EC37/#EC2M) adapter.
Four additional PCIe adapters that were previously supported on other servers are now supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer:
- 10Gb FCoE PCIe Dual Port Adapter (#5708)
- PCIe2 4-Port (10GbE and 1GbE) SR and RJ45 Adapter (#5744)
- PCIe 380 MB Cache Dual Port 3Gb SAS RAID Adapter (#5805)
- PCIe2 4-port (10Gb FCoE and 1GbE) LR and RJ45 Adapter (#EN0M)
In addition to the above four adapters, two new PCIe3 adapters are supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer. These are a 4-port 10Gb Ethernet adapter (#EN15/#EN17) and a 2-port 10Gb Ethernet adapter.
With additional PCIe Gen3 I/O drawers, the maximum number of PCIe adapters is increased. Associated with the increase in the number of SAS adapters in an increase to the EXP24S HDD/SSD drawer (#5887). The E870 now supports up to 3,072 drives with a new maximum of 128 EXP24S drawers. The E880 now supports up to 4,032 drives with a new maximum of 168 EXP24S drawers. The maximum of 16 EXP24S drawers per PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer due to cabling considerations remains unchanged.
Power scale-out server enhancements
4.1 GHz for Power S822 and S822L
A new 8-core 4.1 GHz Processor Card (#EPXL/#ELPF) is added to the Power S822 (8284-22A) and Power S822L (8247-22L) servers. It provides a per-core performance increase compared to the previous S822 maximum of 3.8 GHz and the S822L maximum of 3.4 GHz.
Configuration rules associated with the 4.1 GHz Processor Card generally match rules provided of other gigahertz processor cards. For example, the S822 server can be configured with one feature EPXL 8-core processor card or with two cards (an 8-core or 16-core server) and the S822L server can be configured with two feature ELPF cards (a 16-core server). However, there are some configuration differences designed to ensure proper cooling of the 4.1 GHz S822 and S822L servers:
- When feature EPXL is configured, simultaneous multithreading (SMT) may not exceed SMT4.
- The memory maximum is 512 GB and only 16 GB or 32 GB DIMMs are supported. The 64 GB DIMM is not supported.
- Specific PCIe adapters are not supported in the system unit: feature EJ0M/EL3B/EJ11/EL60 SAS adapters, feature EC32/EL3D IB adapter, and feature EC37/EL3X/EC2M/EL40 NIC/RoCE adapter.
Installation and operation of systems with feature EPXL will result in greater fan noise than the fan noise of the equivalent IBM machine without feature EPXL. Local regulations may govern noise level exposure in the workplace and surrounding area, and may apply to the client and the client's machine installation. The actual sound pressure levels in the client's installation depend upon a variety of factors, including the number of racks in the installation; the size, materials, and configuration of the room where the client designates the racks to be installed; the noise levels from other equipment; the room ambient temperature; and employees' location in relation to the equipment. Further, compliance with such government regulations also depends upon a variety of additional factors, including the duration of employees' exposure and whether employees wear hearing protection. IBM recommends that the client consult with qualified experts in this field to determine whether the client's use of machines with feature EPXL is in compliance with the applicable regulations.
With the 4.1 GHz cards, good cooling in the machine room is recommended as heavy workloads might see some performance degradation above 30 degrees Celsius if internal temperatures trigger a CPU clock reduction. Fans also run faster with the 4.1 GHz cards, increasing the noise level somewhat. See the physical planning manual for more detail.
Firmware level 8.1.3, or later, is required unless PowerVM® is being used. If PowerVM is being used, then Firmware level 8.3, or later, is required.
Maximum memory for Power S814 and S824L
The maximum memory capacity of the Power S824L server is doubled to 2 TB and the Power S814 server is doubled to 1 TB. This is accomplished by using the 128 GB memory feature EM8E for the S814 and S824L servers.
Configuration flexibility for using the 128 GB DIMM is enhanced for the S824 server and provided for the S814 and S824L servers. Previously, there were no MES orders and a S824 server either had 1 TB of memory (half populated) or 2 TB (completely populated). Now scale-out memory rules are consistent for all DIMM sizes. For example, now 128 GB DIMM pairs can be mixed with other size pairs, and MES orders can be placed for just one pair of 128 GB DIMMs. The strong recommendation of at least four DIMMs (two DIMM features) per socket remains. Note that scheduled downtime is required to add or change memory DIMMs. Also note that a processor card using the 128 GB DIMMs uses a slightly lower memory channel bandwidth to ease cooling requirements.
Firmware 8.1.x, 8.3, or later, is required; firmware level 8.2 is not supported.
New processor offerings for the S824L server
Without a GPU adapter, the following fully activated IBM POWER8 dual-chip module (DCM) processor configurations are available for the S824L server:
- 8-core or 16-core 4.15 GHz (#ELPH) with activation code feature (#ELAH)
- 24-core 3.52 GHz (#ELPJ) with activation code feature (#ELAJ)
PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer on scale-out servers
The maximum number of PCIe slots supported on Power scale-out servers is significantly increased with the support of the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer (#EMX0/#ELMX). The 4U drawer and its 6-slot Fan-out Module (#EMXF/#ELMF) is the same drawer as previously announced on the Power E870 and E880 servers but different configuration options are available. Features EMX0 and EMXF are used on the Power S822, S814, and S824 servers. Features ELMX and ELMF are used on the Power S812L, S822L, and S824L servers.
A PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer can hold one or two 6-slot fan-out modules. Each fan-out module is attached to a PCIe3 Optical Cable Adapter located in a x16 slot in the system unit. The 4U scale-out servers use a single-width full-high adapter (#EJ08). The 2U scale-out server uses a double-width, low-profile PCIe3 Optical Cable Adapter (#EJ05) that is plugged into one x16 slot but then overlaps a second PCIe slot (either x16 or x8 depending on where the card is plugged). Note that use of the high-function SAS backplane (#EJ0U/#EL3U) requires the feature EJ08 adapter to overlap a x16 slot. The resulting maximums are shown in the table below.

A PCIe3 Optical Cable Adapter attaches to a fan-out module through an Active Optical Cable Pair. Use the 3-meter cable pair (#ECC7) for attaching an I/O drawer in the same rack as the scale-out server. Use the 10-meter cable pair (#ECC8) for attaching an I/O drawer in a different rack. The 2-meter cable pair (#ECC6) is not supported on scale-out servers due to the cable management arm at the rear of the scale-out servers. The two AOC cables connect to two CXP ports on the fan-out module and to two CXP ports on the EJ0x adapter. The top port of the fan-out module must be cabled to the top port of the EJ0x port. Likewise, the bottom two ports must be cabled together.
A blind swap cassette (BSC) is used to house the full-high adapters that go into the PCIe Gen3 slots. The BSC is the same BSC as used with the previous generation server's 12X attached I/O drawers (#5802 or #5877). The drawer is shipped with a full set of BSC, even if the BSC is empty. A feature number to order additional full-high BSC is not required or announced.
Over 30 PCIe adapters are supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer on scale-out servers, providing a robust set of configuration options. This list is almost identical to the list for the enterprise E870/E880 servers with the caveat that Linux-only servers sometimes use different feature numbers for the same adapter and that operating system-specific adapters can vary between different server models. Note that features 5748 and EC42 are not supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer, which is different from what was announced on the Power E870/E880 I/O drawer.
Some of the adapters have specific slot placement considerations in the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer. See the PCIe Placement Guide for more specifics. Feature numbers EJ0J/EL59, EJ10, and EJ0L have a maximum four per fan-out module. Feature numbers 5785, 2893/2894, and EN13/EN14 have a maximum of one per fan-out module.
The PCIe slots in the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer are hot plug, but adding a PCIe3 Optical Cable Adapter or a PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer or fan-out module requires scheduled downtime.
With the addition of PCIe Gen3 I/O drawers to scale-out servers, the maximum number of PCIe adapters per server is increased. Associated with the increase in the number of SAS adapters is an increase to a maximum of 28 EXP24S HDD/SSD drawers (#5887/#EL1S). This is a 100% growth over the Power 720/730/740 servers. There is a maximum of 16 EXP24S drawers per PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer due to cabling considerations. There is no change to the current maximum of 14 EXP24S drawers per scale-out system unit due to cabling considerations. There is no change to the 4-core S814 server supporting zero EXP24S drawers.
There is a racking consideration associated with the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer cable management bracket. The bracket is located at the rear of the drawer and swings up to provide service access to the PCIe adapters. 2U (2 EIA) of space is required to swing up the bracket. Thus the drawer cannot be placed in the very top 2U of a rack.
IBM Manufacturing can factory integrate the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer in a rack if ordered together with either a 42U 7014-T42/#0553 rack or a 36U 7014-T00/#0551 rack. However, the drawer cannot be factory integrated in a 42U Slim Rack 7965-94Y/#ER05 due to potential vibration concerns during shipping. In the Slim Rack case the drawer would have to be installed at the client site.
S814 100V - 240V flexibility
Configuration flexibility for the Power S814 4-core and 6-core servers is enhanced with the ability to order two 900 W power supplies instead of two 1400 W power supplies for rack configurations. 900 W allows two 100-120 V power sources to be used. Previously, this was only done by using an RPQ and was available only on initial order of the server. The RPQ is no longer required, and the power supplies can be configured through e-config and a regular order placed. MES orders for already installed servers is now also supported. Note the 8-core 3.7 GHz processor card (#EPX6) is not supported with 900 W power supplies.
S814 rack-to-tower-to-rack flexibility
Changing an existing Power S814 server from a tower configuration to a rack-mounted configuration or vice versa is now supported for 4-core or 6-core configurations. The change is ordered using e-config and an MES order. Existing rack-mount or tower configuration feature numbers would be removed. New tower or rack-mount feature numbers would be ordered, and IBM would ship the required hardware. The power supplies do not have to change from 900 W to 1400 W or vice versa. Though the change is designated as customer setup, clients who infrequently deal with physically handling/changing servers may want to hire assistance. This capability is available immediately. Note that only rack-mounted servers are supported with PCIe Gen3 I/O drawers or with EXP24S drawers. Also note the 8-core server is not supported in a tower configurations and that the 4-core server.
S824L expanded configuration options
Previously, the Power S824L (8247-42L) server always included one or two GPUs. Now a GPU is optional and the S824L configuration options are tremendously expanded, making it a more general purpose, Linux-only server when a GPU is not included. Note, however, if the S824L server was initially ordered without a GPU, then adding a GPU to that server is not allowed.
For S824L systems that contain a GPU, the April 2015 configuration enhancements are only memory enhancements and additional little endian OS Ubuntu 15.04. The addition of a 128 GB Memory DIMM increases the maximum memory. With a GPU, support for additional adapters or disk drives is not announced.
When no GPU is included in the configuration, then the S824L server can now support:
- PowerVM
- Big endian support with PowerVM installed for RHEL 6.6 and RHEL 7.1
- Little endian support with PowerVM for Ubuntu 15.04, RHEL 7.1, SLES 12, and Ubuntu 14.04.3 (staged support for August)

- PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer (#ELMX) with 6-port fan-out module (#ELMF)

New PCIe Gen3 adapters
New 4-port 10Gb Ethernet Adapter
The new PCIe3 4-port 10GbE Adapter doubles the number of 10GbE ports per adapter, saving PCIe slots on POWER8 servers. The adapter is supported in full-high slots such as the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer and the 4U scale-out system units and in the Power E870/E880 system node slots. It does not fit in the 2U scale-out server low-profile slots. In addition to Ethernet NIC support, it also provides SR-IOV NIC support, which can allow further virtualization and slot savings.
The adapter has four SFP+ ports. All four ports use SR optical fiber cabling or all four use copper twinax cabling. Optical transceivers are included with the SR adapter feature. Copper twinax transceivers are included on the separately ordered copper cables.

New 2-port 56Gb FDR InfiniBand Adapter
The PCIe3 LP 2-port 56Gb FDR IB Adapter x16 provides a high-bandwidth InfiniBand adapter with very good latency for applications using this interface. Two QSFP+ ports are provided and use either FDR IB or 40GbE cables/transceivers.
This is a x16 adapter and it physically must be located in a x16 slot in the system unit of scale-out servers. It is not supported in the PCIe Gen3 I/O Drawer nor in the Power E870/E880 server.

New 2-port 10Gb NIC/RoCE Adapter
The PCIe3 2-port 10GbE NIC/RoCE Adapter is a refresh of the current 10Gb NIC/RoCE Adapter, helping to ensure adapter availability for POWER8 servers. The adapter can be configured for either NIC or for RoCE capability. NIM and Linux Install is supported, an enhancement compared to the existing PCIe2 NIC/RoCE adapters (#EC27/#EC28/#EC29/#EC30).
RoCE can provide a performance and efficiency boost for the applications using the interface. The adapter is available either for SR optical fiber cabling or for copper twinax cabling. Optical transceivers are included with the SR adapter feature. Copper twinax transceivers are included on the separately ordered copper cables.

SR-IOV for POWER8 servers
Fulfilling the October 2014 SOD, SR-IOV NIC capability is announced for a full range of POWER8 servers, expanding on the Power E870/E880 system node Hardware Announcement 115-043, dated February 24, 2015. SR-IOV can provide more efficient hardware virtualization and can provide quality of service controls, improving the manageability of virtualized adapters.

These adapters each have four ports, and all four ports are enabled with SR-IOV function. The entire adapter (all four ports) is configured for SR-IOV or none of the ports is.
The client can chose to configure as SR-IOV and assign 100% of a port to one partition. The FCoE capability of the adapter is not supported when using SR-IOV. SR-IOV can provide simple virtualization without VIOS with greater server efficiency as more of the virtualization work is done in the hardware and less in the software. SR-IOV can also provide bandwidth quality of service (QoS) controls to help ensure that client-specified partitions have a minimum level of Ethernet port bandwidth and thus improve the ability to share Ethernet ports more effectively.
As a QoS example, assume there are three partitions: Partition A, B, and C. If Partition A is assigned a minimum of 20% of the bandwidth of a port, Partitions B and C cannot use more than 80% of the bandwidth unless Partition A is using less than 20%. Partition A can use more than 20% if bandwidth is available. This applies to outbound NIC traffic from the port. It does not apply to inbound NIC traffic into the port, but remember that these ports run in full duplex and thus QoS for outgoing traffic remains in effect even with high levels of inbound NIC traffic.
SR-IOV is considered simple virtualization and does not include higher-level virtualization functions provided by VIOS such as Live Partition Mobility. SRIOV can optionally be combined with VIOS to leverage VIOS's higher level of functionality, but continues to provide bandwidth QoS. The portion of the Ethernet port's bandwidth controlled by VIOS would use software virtualization.
The expanded POWER8 SR-IOV NIC capability with a planned availability of June 2015 requires:

This expanded capability is on the Power scale-out servers, is on the PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer, and with the new 4-port 10Gb Ethernet adapter on the enterprise system node.
IBM Manufacturing is not announcing the capability to preconfigure SR-IOV-capable I/O using SR-IOV. Such hardware will be shipped from IBM when ordered with a server in the same way adapters have been shipped previously. The client will need to configure the SR-IOV capability.
The following POWER8 PCIe slots are SR-IOV capable:
- All Power E870/E880 system node slots.
- Slots C1 and C4 of the 6-slot Fan-out Module in a PCIe Gen3 I/O drawer.
- Slots C6, C7, C10, and C12 of a Power S814 (1S 4U) or S812L (1S 2U) server.
- Slots C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7, C10, and C12 of a S824 or S824L server (2-socket, 4U) with both sockets populated. If only one socket is populated, then C6, C7, C10, and C12.
- Slots C2, C3, C5, C6, C7, C10, and C12 of a S822 or S822L server (2-socket, 2U) with both sockets populated. If only one socket is populated, then C6, C7, C10, and C12.
An HMC is required to configure SR-IOV.
e-config recognizes VIOS is not a prerequisite for Power E870 and E880 system lower-profile feature EN0J and EN0L adapters because of the SR-IOV capability. But e-config will not be updated until June 2, 2015, with the same insight for the full-high feature EN0H/EN0K/EN0M adapters for IBM i configurations. These full-high adapters can be ordered if VIOS is present on the configuration prior to e-config's planned enhancement. e-config recognizes that features EN15, EN16, EN17, and EN18 do not require VIOS for IBM i configurations.
POWER7/POWER7+ Ethernet enhancement
The very cost-effective Ethernet adapters announced in 2014 on IBM POWER8 servers are now supported on the IBM Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 servers, and IBM PowerLinux 7R1, 7R2, and 7R4 servers that are "C" or "D" models. They are supported in the system unit and are not supported in the PCIe Gen1 slots of the 12X-attached PCIe I/O drawer (#5802, #5877, #EL36, #EL37).

The PCIe3 2-port 10GbE NIC&RoCE SFP+ Copper Adapters (#EC38, #EC37, #EL53, #EL3X) and PCIe3 2-port 10GbE NIC&RoCE SR Adapters (#EC2N, #EC2M, #EL54, #EL40) are not available in the following countries: Abu Dhabi, Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Dubai, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen.
When feature EPXL is configured, SMT may not exceed SMT4.
Installation and operation of systems with feature EPXL will result in greater fan noise than the fan noise of the equivalent IBM machine without feature EPXL. Local regulations may govern noise level exposure in the workplace and surrounding area, and may apply to the client and the client's machine installation. The actual sound pressure levels in the client's installation depend upon a variety of factors, including the number of racks in the installation; the size, materials, and configuration of the room where the client designates the racks to be installed; the noise levels from other equipment; the room ambient temperature; and employees' location in relation to the equipment. Further, compliance with such government regulations also depends upon a variety of additional factors, including the duration of employees' exposure and whether employees wear hearing protection. IBM recommends that the client consult with qualified experts in this field to determine whether the client's use of machines with feature EPXL is in compliance with the applicable regulations.

Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
