New features, functions, and enhancements of IBM Host On-Demand V12.0

Security enhancements

  • Transport Layer Security V1.1 and Transport Layer Security V1.2 support for Host On-Demand Redirector
  • Capability for Host On-Demand Administrator to choose Java Secure Socket Extension (JSSE) for secure connections using Redirector. This results in the Host On-Demand Redirector using Transport Layer Security V1.2 or Transport Layer Security  V1.1 or Transport Layer Security V1.0, based on the security configuration of the client or host.

Key usage and extended key usage:

  • This feature allows the Host On-Demand client to send a personal certificate based on key usage. The Select Certificate Key Usage panel shows all of the defined Object ID (OID) key usages. This further supports extended key usage to add a new OID and description to the list.
  • At authentication time, Host On-Demand chooses certificates for client authentication, based on the key usage that you select. If a certificate's enhanced key usage attribute contains one or more of the OIDs that you specify, the certificate is eligible for use.

Usability enhancements

The Look and Feel Enhancements for Host On-Demand V12.0 default theme for Windows clients is based on Java Nimbus Look and Feel. Other look and feel improvements include new session icons, logon screen background, and layout changes.

Windows style text selection:

  • Host On-Demand user can select the text on the terminal screen in uneven fashion similar to text editing application, Notepad in Windows.

Close button for tabbed sessions:

  • Users can close the embedded Host On-Demand sessions by using the Close button on the session tab.

GUI option to enable keystroke buffering:

  • Key type-ahead feature enables users to continue typing when input is inhibited. Keys typed are queued and processed when input inhibited condition is removed.

GUI for directory utility:

  • Graphical interface is included for the existing command line tool DirUtil for Windows and Linux™.

Copy as image:

  • This feature allows the user to copy the green screen (presentation space) or part of the green screen (presentation space) as image.

Print graphics:

  • This feature is implemented based on the print graphics function in PCOMM. It prints the marked area of screen as image.

Productivity enhancements

Script to find Host On-Demand server version:

  • Host On-Demand Administrators can find the Host On-Demand server version by executing a script batch file available for all supported operating systems. This is useful for finding Host On-Demand server version using command line interface.

Support for browsers without Java plug-in:

  • When accessed using a browser that does not support Java plug-in, Host On-Demand cached and download client pages automatically generate a JNLP file and prompt users to launch it to use Host On-Demand client without the web browser.
  • All the default Host On-Demand cached and download client pages and those created using Host On-Demand V12.0 Deployment Wizard have this capability. For more information about the supported browsers, refer to Host On-Demand system requirements page.
  • Currently does not support programmable Host On-Demand, Eclipse plug-in configuration utility and Portlets.
  • Supports Google Chrome and Microsoft™ Edge.

Installation enhancements

  • New installer enables Host On-Demand V12.0 to be installed using IBM Installation Manager on the all supported platforms. This would enable installation of fixes only (fix packs) versus having to do a whole product refresh (refresh pack)

Other enhancements

Stand-alone Host On-Demand client:

  • Host On-Demand V12.0 includes a stand-alone client package that enables users to configure and access host sessions without any dependency on the Host On-Demand server. The Host On-Demand administrator can now allow users to download the stand-alone package.

64-bit support:

  • Host On-Demand V12.0 can be installed as 64-bit application on a 64-bit operating system. Host On-Demand Service Manager runs as a 64-bit process.

Windows 10 support

New features, functions, and enhancements of IBM Personal Communications V12.0

Security enhancements

Support for server name indication (Transport Layer Security extension):

  • Server name indication extension of Transport Layer Security enables the client to specify the server name during the "Client Hello" request. When more than one server is sharing a single IP address, this enables the server to provide a certificate corresponding to that server name.

Enhancement to Bypass Sign-on using Password Substitute feature:

  • IBM Personal Communications now detects password changes on an IBM System i® host and prompts the user to update the new password. This provides the capability to enable the user to update the password in the Windows registry when the host logon password changes or expires.

Installation enhancements

Removal of "Classic Private" application data location:

  • "Classic Private" application data location has been discontinued with IBM Personal Communications V12.0 to align with the Microsoft strategy to keep application data out of application installation path ("Program Files" path).
  • User now has capability to change the emulator profile file location under "Classic Private" and has now been granted to an installation with "All Users' common application data" location.

Packaging enhancements

IBM Remote API Client:

  • On a Windows 64-bit client, no SNA stack is available for IBM Personal Communications. However, Remote API Client and PCOMM can be merged, enabling users to start SNA sessions in Personal Communications on 64-bit clients.
  • IBM Remote API Client is now bundled with IBM PCOMM V12.0.

IBM Stand-Alone Host On-Demand:

  • IBM Stand-Alone Host On-Demand is a stand-alone counterpart of IBM Host-On-Demand.
  • This Stand-Alone Host On-Demand function provides cost-effective and secure host access to users in intranet-based and extranet-based environments.
  • Unlike IBM Host-On-Demand, it has no dependency on web server and browsers. It supports emulation for terminal types, communication protocols, communication gateways, and printers.
  • IBM Stand-Alone Host-On-Demand is now bundled with IBM Personal Communications V12.0.
  • IBM Personal Communications users can use this application on Windows (32-bit and 64-bit), Linux, and Mac OS X platforms.

JRE Upgrade:

  • IBM Runtime Environment Java Technology Edition (JRE) is upgraded to version 1.8.

Currency:

  • IBM Personal Communications V12.0 now supports the Windows 10 operating system.

Usability enhancements

Print preview support for Print Screen Collection:

  • With IBM Personal Communications V12.0, users can preview the emulator screens collected for printing. The following operations can be selectively performed on the collected screens:
  1. Print and keep collection
  2. Print and purge collection
  3. Process collection (print selected screens)

Enhancement to the Edit/Paste functionality:

  • The cursor position can be moved to the end of pasted area. This requires the following keyword to be added to the "pcswin.ini" file:
  1. [Edit]
  2. MoveCursorToEndOfPastedData=Y

FTP client and enhanced support for MVS™ data sets:

  • IBM PCOMM V12.0 now seamlessly supports file transfer to MVS file systems, apart from existing support for hierarchical file systems (HFS).

Note: File transfer to an MVS file system might result in change to the file name as per MVS naming conventions. This is applicable to both MVS sequential data set (also called physical sequential/PS) and MVS partitioned data set (PDS).

Serviceability enhancements

Enhancement to the trace facility:

  • Tracing can be restarted without having the existing trace files overwritten.

Bidirectional enhancements :

Bidi enablement of AutoReverse and AutoPush:

  • IBM PCOMM V12.0 now supports all four runtime Bidi specific input method parameters:
  1. "AutoReverse on LTR Screen"
  2. "AutoReverse on RTL Screen"
  3. "AutoPush on LTR Screen"
  4. "AutoPush on RTL Screen"
    • Bidi users of 3270 sessions can turn on this option; state of this option is persisted across session restarts
    • Bidi - Special Copy/Paste Treatment

IBM PCOMM V12.0 now seamlessly supports copy/paste of Bidirectional characters from and to advanced text editors. BiDi users can now paste the copied text in TXT, RTF, or HTML format based on the configured settings.

Bidirectional enhancements

  • In a bidirectional installation, the FTP client has a new text field added to hold Logical Record Length under the Bidirectional Options section of the Session Configuration panel.
  • Copy and paste enhancement allows for mixed Arabic-English and Hebrew-English text to be copied from and pasted to word processors with complete retention of text reordering.

DBCS functions:

  • When the screen resolution exceeds 1280 pixels, character spacing can fix the maximized window in Japanese DBCS sessions. Set the "TextFitMaxWindow" .WS keyword to "Y" under "[DBCS]" stanza.
  • IBM5577 and ESC/P PDT mode printing support added to Japanese JIS2004 Unicode sessions.
  • English 037 host code page session support for Traditional Chinese installations. To enable this support, the Traditional Chinese Personal Communications product must be installed under the Traditional Chinese locale.
  • Setting NewUDCRangeCHT=Y, and using a new keyword "UDCRangeAdjust=Big5Ext" in .WS profile under [Translation] stanza can exclude Big5 extended characters PC code 0xF9D6 to 0xF9FE out from UDC range.
  • Support for Host Code Page 1377 - Hong Kong T-Chinese Mixed Host HKSCS (Traditional Chinese sessions only). PDT mode printing is not supported under this host code page.

Authorized User

Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User given access to the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

Note:Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
