IBM Spectrum Archive™ is a member of the IBM Spectrum Storage™ software portfolio, designed to address data storage inefficiencies by changing the economics of storage with a layer of intelligent software. This enables use of economical tape hardware in nonproprietary format within storage infrastructures in need of long-term retention of archival data.

IBM Spectrum Archive Enterprise Edition (EE) V1.3 supports the new enterprise-class TS1160 tape drive and delivers usability improvements through a new CLI to ease the monitoring of running tasks and maintenance of tapes.

IBM Spectrum Archive Library Edition (LE) V2.4.1 supports the new enterprise-class TS1160 tape drive.

Description

IBM Spectrum Archive EE V1.3

The infusion of technology into all aspects of our lives has created a world that is generating billions of gigabytes of data every day. This explosion of unstructured data requires a new approach to support traditional and new workloads, one that is driven by a software-defined strategy.

The IBM Spectrum Storage family combines traditional, private, and public cloud storage with IBM FlashSystem® environments to deliver new ways to enhance data economics, including the use of commodity hardware. IBM Spectrum Archive EE is based on IBM Linear Tape File System™ (LTFS) and enables fast and easy data retention to reduce the total cost of ownership for active archive storage.

IBM Spectrum Archive EE combines the ease of use of LTFS with the scalability, manageability, and performance of IBM Spectrum Scale, an industry leader in high availability and high I/O capabilities. IBM Spectrum Archive EE extends the abilities of IBM Spectrum Scale with simplified tape administration and relieves the complexity of transferring data from tiered disk storage to tape. The ability to move beyond simply adding storage to optimize and streamline data management and reduce storage infrastructure costs are excellent benefits for businesses of any size. As needs for capacity, I/O, and data availability grow, IBM Spectrum Archive EE enables easy expansion of the tape tier of IBM Spectrum Scale. The ability to add media and provision it in the LTFS pool of General Parallel File System (GPFS™) enables expanded archive capacity with minimal downtime and without impacting the availability of data already in the pool.

IBM Spectrum Archive EE is designed to enable policy management of tape as a storage tier in an IBM Spectrum Scale environment, helping to encourage the use of tape as a critical tier in the storage environment.

IBM Spectrum Archive EE can be used as an operational storage tier accessible by disk-based applications. Using IBM Spectrum Archive EE to replace disks with tape in Tier 2 and Tier 3 storage can improve data access over other storage solutions as it increases efficiency and streamlines management of files on tape.

IBM Spectrum Archive EE can play a major role in reducing the cost of storage for data that does not need the access performance of primary disk. By replacing Tier 2 and Tier 3 disk storage with tape, organizations can achieve a new operational efficiency and cost effectiveness compared to the cost of equivalent disk-based environments. IBM Spectrum Archive EE simplifies the use of tape by making it transparent to the user and manageable by the administrator under a single infrastructure.

IBM Spectrum Archive LE V2.4.1

IBM Spectrum Archive LE now supports TS1160 tape drives. IBM Spectrum Archive LE is the first file system that works with IBM System Storage® tape technology to optimize ease-of-use and portability for open-systems tape storage. With IBM Spectrum Archive LE, accessing files that are stored on an IBM tape cartridge is simple, and reading data on a tape cartridge is as easy as dragging and dropping. Users can run any application that is designed for disk files against tape data without concern that the data is physically stored on tape.

IBM Spectrum Archive LE software enables users to mount a tape library as a single file system. It also allows users to access tape cartridges in the library as subdirectories. A typical user of IBM Spectrum Archive LE runs an application program on a library server. In this environment, multiple clients can read, write, and access data on the server by using a network. Each tape library has one changer device and multiple tape drives.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Accessibility Compliance Report containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
