Developing Embedded Software For The IBM PowerPC™ 970FX Processor

Application Note
This application note discusses issues associated with developing new software and porting existing software to the PowerPC 970FX processor. First, an overview of the PowerPC 64-bit architecture as implemented in the PowerPC 970FX processor is presented. An introduction to the PowerPC 64-bit ELF ABI (Application Binary Interface) is also presented followed by a brief discussion of software development tools. The PowerPC 970FX processor can execute PowerPC 32-bit (in 32-bit computation mode) and PowerPC 64-bit (in 64-bit computation mode) programs. The application note presents issues associated with porting PowerPC 32-bit software and writing new software to execute in 64-bit computation mode on the PowerPC 970FX processor. An overview of tasks required to run existing PowerPC 32-bit software in 32-bit computation mode is also presented. A brief introduction to VMX (Vector/SIMD Multimedia eXtenstion) programming is presented. This application note assumes that the reader is familiar with embedded software development concepts as well as the 32-bit PowerPC architecture.
