Solutions to common problems
Problem: Downloading Problem in Juice v2.2

Description: When the Juice program attempts to download audio files, if the webserver it is downloading from is busy or unavailable Juice will mistakenly save the HTML response error page as the file and mark the audio file as downloaded. The HTML file can not be played and causes an error message.

Workaround: In Juice, click on the "Cleanup" tab and then select the erroneous podcast from the "Select a feed" drop down menu. Select the checkboxes corresponding to the improperly downloaded audio files and click the "Delete" button. Click on the "Subscription" tab, and select the podcast. Click the "Check selected feed" to restart the downloads.

Problem: It takes too long to download a Podcast.

Description: Podcasts are compressed less and are of higher quality than most webcasts, resulting in longer download times (especially over smaller bandwidth connections such as modem connections).

Workaround: Subscribing to a Podcast RSS feed will allow Podcasts to be downloaded automatically as new content arrives. Usually by the time you notice that there is new content to view, it will have already downloaded. See the Accessing IBM Podcasts using a podcatcher section for details on how to subscribe to a Podcast RSS feed.

Problem: Playback stops and/or rebuffers when progressively downloading (playing the file as it downloads).

Description: If you left click a "Download in .mp3 format" link on a Podcast channel page, the .mp3 file will open up into your default media player and start playing as a progressive download. If you do not have a large enough bandwidth connection, the playback may overrun the download which may result in the playback of the file stopping or rebuffering.

Solution: To prevent stoppages and rebuffering, completely download the file prior to playing it as described in the Accessing IBM Podcasts using a podcatcher section.

Problem: Audio cuts out in the last few seconds of playback when played in iTunes.

Description: iTunes has a feature called crossfade which fades out the last few seconds of an audio file and then fades in the first few seconds of the next audio file. This feature is intended for .mp3 song playlists.

Workaround: This feature is only affects playback when using iTunes Library as the source. If you are simply trying to listen to downloaded Podcast subscription audio, simply choose "Podcasts" as the source in iTunes on the right "Source" pane. Crossfade is only enabled for the iTunes Library, so your Podcasts should playback normally. If you are importing files into iTunes or use iTunes as your default Windows media player, please refer to the solution below.

Solution: To modify this behaviour for the iTunes Library, select the "preferences" option under the "Edit" menu in iTunes. Select the "Playback" tab, and then either deselect the "Crossfade Playback" checkbox to disable the feature or choose a more suitable crossfade setting using the slider control.
