Lean Six Sigma (LSS) produces real results in difficult economic times by uncovering process waste, reducing non-value adding activity, and increasing productivity. The benefits are even felt in IT. Business process management (BPM) and service-oriented architectures (SOAs) combine with LSS to accelerate improvements and results. At the same time, they increase organizational flexibility and technology enabled responsiveness. Many successful companies have found that the linkages are clear. Early adopters who have worked their way past cultural and organizational barriers are seeing impressive performance and financial results. The rewards can be great, especially for those who take action now. This IBM® Redguide™ publication is intended to help companies that are leaders in their markets and are looking for new ways to differentiate themselves from their competitors. In this guide, we describe the key BPM, SOA, and LSS components, highlight the linkages between them, and summarize the results that leading firms have achieved. We outline the think big, start now steps that are needed to move your own initiative forward. In this guide, we also suggest ways to successfully avoid some of the barriers that have hampered others by focusing on the tools that deliver measurable results quickly.

Many enterprises, both large and small, are focused on increasing their business flexibility while simplifying their IT infrastructure in order to better meet their business objectives. The IBM On Demand Operating Environment defines a set of integration and infrastructure management capabilities that enterprises can use to achieve these challenging objectives. The On Demand Operating Environment feature of particular relevance to this Redpaper is the use of a service-oriented architecture (SOA). Using an SOA is necessary to achieve the goals of increased business flexibility and a simplified IT infrastructure. Many of these enterprises are determined to use proven architectures, designs, and product mappings in order to speed their implementation and minimize their risk. This Redpaper describes how to use the DVD entitled "Service Orientation Test-Drive with Linux on xSeries" that accompanies the paper. This paper focuses on a simple infrastructure to exploit service orientation principles. The intent of this environment is to allow companies to evaluate the processes and questions that arise from SOA projects, and take into consideration aspects such as the impact on the underlying system infrastructure. The information provided by this Redpaper and additional materials will help you get off to a fast start with SOA by providing an easy platform to install the basic software building blocks that can allow companies to experiment with service orientation principles.

Welcome to the IBM eServer BladeCenter Business Express - Buying and Selling Guide. IBM has produced several of these guides for various IBM offerings, and they have become extremely popular with customers, Business Partners, and IBM employees. We named the guides "Buying and Selling," because it is clear that all the reasons a sales representative or Business Partner would sell an offering—value, differentiation, solution to customer business problems—are the same reasons why a customer would buy an offering. The broad target audience alone makes this guide very important: It provides one place to look for all. This guide is also unique because it is the first Buying and Selling Guide to focus on the complete IBM Express Portfolio, which is designed to better accommodate the needs of businesses that are looking for simple and cost-effective solutions to business problems. The purpose of this guide is to consolidate information from a variety of sources, so you do not have to search through dozens of resources to learn about the many ways IBM solutions can positively affect your business. It offers valuable information about definitions, events, information sources, education, technical assistance, frequently asked questions, services, finding a partner, support information, references, and much more. Let this consolidated reference (which is also easily found on the Web) be your one stop to help make the right decisions about the ways your business can be more successful—and how IBM Express Software can

This IBM Redpaper positions the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module for the IBM eServer BladeCenter and describes how it enhances the BladeCenter value proposition by seamlessly interfacing into a customer's existing data network. This paper helps you plan, install, and configure the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module for several network topologies. Topology examples are provided to demonstrate several ways to perform the integration of the switch module into different networks. We also discuss the architecture of the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module and BladeCenter and how the technology of each product jointly provides full interoperability into existing Cisco data centers. It is assumed that experienced systems and network administrators will use this paper to successfully integrate the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module into their existing network. As we write this Redpaper, the Cisco Systems Intelligent Gigabit Ethernet Switch Module supports the 12.1(14) version of IOS. The switch also supports the 12.1(22) version. Check this support site on ibm.com for current information pertaining to the latest supported version of IOS: http://www.ibm.com/servers/eserver/support/bladecenter/index.html

IBM eServer Performance Technical Report Working together, IBM Rochester and J.D. Edwards have been able to produce the largest number of concurrent users in a HTML/WebSphere transaction-based environment for the J.D. Edwards OneWorld Xe suite. The HTML interface was used to enter business transactions to the popular J.D. Edwards OneWorld Xe suite of business applications including Financial, Distribution and Manufacturing. Average response time was a speedy 1.16 seconds. This benchmark is based on 17 different interactive transactions. The benchmark provided an opportunity to make many changes to both J.D. Edwards software and IBM operating software to improve efficiency. Over the course of six months, resource efficiency was improved by a factor of 2.4 times (measured in CPW) and response time reduced by a factor of 5 times. IBM and J. D. Edwards issued a joint press statement documenting this achievement. The benchmark used three iSeries 24-way systems connected with gigabit fiber optic cables. Valuable experience has been gained in scaling WebSphere/Java-based applications in a real world e-business situation.
