As a project for a certain customer, we constructed a client/server-type parallel sysplex OLTP system with DB2 for OS/390 as its nucleus database. The primary objective of this investigation was to prove its applicability to large-scale next generation mainline operational systems. The following base technologies were adopted: 9672 Parallel Sysplex System 155 Mbps high speed ATM via OSA2 adapter DB2 for OS/390 data sharing SQL language stored procedure DRDA over TCP/IP This paper focuses on the performance of the system, specifically on what levels of transaction volume and response time are attainable for transactions issued from client applications using the SQL stored procedure in a parallel sysplex, data shared DB2 environment. The evaluation was conducted by actual performance measurements on the prototype system. We proved that a response time of one to two seconds and transaction rates of more than 100 TPS are realistic performance objectives. We also identified some important issues related to designing the stored procedure, which are discussed briefly.
