This IBM Redbook introduces the IBM Application Development Tools for z/OS and OS/390. The first chapter provides a high level overview of each of the products, suitable for any person that requires an introduction to these capabilities. The remainder of the book delivers more technical information, including numerous examples of some of the most commonly used functions of each tool and scenarios of how the tools could be used in an everyday customer environment. The specific application development tools for z/OS and OS/390 covered in this book are: IBM File Manager for z/OS and OS/390, Version 4, Release 1 IBM Fault Analyzer for z/OS and OS/390, Version 4, Release 1 IBM Application Monitor for z/OS and OS/390, Version 2, Release 1 IBM Workload Simulator for z/OS and OS/390, Version 1, Release 1 IBM Debug Tool for z/OS and OS/390, Version 4, Release 1

The ability to connect components is the first step in modernizing your application portfolio. In this IBM Redbook, we look at a real-world example of creating and connecting a Web application to Enterprise business logic using the Struts-based model-view-controller (MVC) framework and associated tooling within WebSphere Studio Enterprise Developer that makes this a snap. To address the needs of large enterprises, a model-based paradigm for building applications in a Struts-based MVC framework is being delivered in the Enterprise Developer. It provides a visual construction and assembly-based environment supporting the implementation of enterprise-level applications and including support for the multiple developer roles and technologies required by those applications. Examples of the technologies supported include HTML, Java, servlet, EJB, COBOL, EGL, PL/I, and connectors. EGL is a high-level language that supports the development of applications in either WebSphere (Java) or traditional transactional environments (CICS). EGL's focus is to allow developers of various backgrounds to be able to write mission-critical business processes for the Internet, which can be leveraged from Struts-based Web applications. This redbook introduces a sample application that encompasses Enterprise Developer concepts and best practices.

This IBM Redbook describes the IBM Application Development Tools for z/OS and OS/390 and includes scenarios that show how to use the tools to recognize, locate, and fix errors in application programs. Part 1 describes the five program products that make up the suite and product integration : -> IBM Fault Analyzer -> IBM File Manager -> IBM Debug Tool -> IBM Application Monitor -> IBM Workload Simulator. Part 2 walks you through detailed scenarios that demonstrate how the tools can be used in a practical, day-to-day manner. Part 3 contains code samples, reports and listings, and examples that are too large to include in the chapters.

Vast numbers of otherwise fully functional application programs are currently unable to interpret the abbreviated date values they contain as belonging to any century but the twentieth. The need to approach the daunting task of identifying, analyzing, and eliminating this limitation in a systematic and efficient manner has led IBM to offer a complementary assortment of products and services collectively known as VisualAge 2000. The guidelines, products, and services that constitute VisualAge 2000 are intended to support customers in their own efforts to tackle the problems posed by the use of abbreviated date fields in their application programs. This book examines two of the products available in the VisualAge 2000 collection designed to address the requirements of system programmers and application developers engaged in identifying and correcting abridged date fields in their application programs in an OS/390 environment: Maintenance 2000 Assists in Year 2000 impact analysis of host applications. The Millennium Language Extensions to COBOL for OS/390 & VM Provides automatic century windowing for specified date fields. In addition to providing an introduction to the functionality available within Maintenance 2000, this book uses a sample application as the basis for a concrete demonstration of how the product can be used to perform the tasks of date identification, Year 2000 impact analysis, and result management. The actual results of the Year 2000 impact analysis process are then used as the basis for

This redbook, 'VisualAge 2000 Test Solution: Testing Your Year 2000 Conversion', demonstrates the VisualAge 2000 Test Solution in action, through a series of tutorials. It is for managers or executives who wish to have a clearer understanding of Year 2000 testing, applications programmers who are involved in testing, and system programmers who support the applications programmers. Part 1 sets out the framework of the VisualAge 2000 Test Solution, describes the tools that are used in the redbook, and describes how to install the sample files. Part 2 presents the tutorials, where each tutorial works through one of the steps in the Test Solution. The tutorials provide detailed instructions for using the nominated tools. By working through the tutorials, you will have a much clearer understanding of what is involved in Year 2000 testing. This edition of the redbook is for OS/390 or VSE users running COBOL or PL/I programs, and using an OS/2- or Windows NT- or Windows 95-based work station. Note that MVS is also supported by the book. MVS users should assume that for 'OS/390' they can read 'MVS', except in product names. A CD-ROM is provided with the redbook. The CD-ROM contains sample programs, data, and JCL, to work through the tutorials. As well, the CD-ROM contains a 'slide-show' demonstration, which runs under Windows and Win-OS/2. The demonstration shows the various tools in action, and is a quick introduction to the tutorials, or for people who do not have access to a particular tool. The tools used extensi

The strategic VSE COBOL compiler is COBOL for VSE/ESA with Full-Function Feature that includes the Debug Tool for VSE/ESA. The run-time library is Language Environment for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4. With these products customers can move their COBOL applications into and beyond Year 2000. The benefits of moving to the new environment are described in this document. The detailed description of the differences between the various language levels and of available migration aids will help you perform the upgrade. This redbook has been written for all professionals with the responsibility for planning and executing the migration of DOS/VS COBOL or VS COBOL II applications to COBOL/VSE and the run-time environment of LE/VSE. Good knowledge of VSE/ESA concepts and HLL programming is required.

The IBM Language Environment for VSE/ESA (LE/VSE) now also offers for VSE customers the concept of a common run-time library for programs written in high level languages. All applications written in C, PL/I and COBOL can use a generalized set of services during program execution, thus avoiding cross-language inconsistencies. Together with LE/VSE, IBM provides a set of new compilers, COBOL/VSE, PL/I VSE and C/VSE. Apart from of enabling the usage of the newest advanced system functions, they also offer the exploitation of the "Year 2000" date format which is a prerequisite for the migration of date-dependent programs; the most appropriate techniques for this simple migration are described and illustrated by examples. This redbook has been written for all professionals concerned with the upkeep of their application program libraries, especially in anticipation of the changes required for Year 2000. Good knowledge of VSE/ESA concepts and HLL programming is assumed.
