Updating Rational Agent Controller

If you have Rational Agent Controller, version 8.2.x already installed on your computer, then you can update to version 8.3.

Note:
You cannot update Rational Agent Controller version 8.1.x to version 8.3. If you have version 8.1.x installed, you should uninstall it and then install version 8.3.

To update to Rational Agent Controller, version 8.3, you can either access the update files directly from the IBM repository, or you can download the files to your computer for a local repository.

Before you begin, ensure that you configured the repository location in Installation Manager.

To update Rational Agent Controller:

  1. Log in as Administrator (or root).
  2. Start IBM Installation Manager.
  3. On the main page of Installation Manager, click Update. The Update Packages Wizard starts.

If you do not have the required version of Installation Manager installed, then by default you are prompted to update to the latest version. If this happens, click Yes to update Installation Manager. When the update completes, click OK to restart Installation Manager, and then click Update.

  4. On the first page of the Update Packages wizard, ensure that Version 8.3 is selected and then click Next.
  5. Read the license agreement. If you agree to the license terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
  6. On the first Features page, click Next.
  7. On the next Features page, choose either a typical installation or a custom installation. Click Next.
  8. Confirm your update summary information and then click Update. The update process starts.
  9. Confirm that the update is successful and click Finish to close Installation Manager.

Setting the JVM to use with Agent Controller

Agent Controller 8.3 is bundled with a JRE. (For details, see Supported JVMs.) The supplied JRE is installed in the <installation location>/AgentController/jdk directory.

In general, Agent Controller works with the following Java virtual machine (JVM) versions:

To change run JRE used by Agent Controller, run the SetConfig script (SetConfig.bat for Microsoft Windows platforms; SetConfig.sh for non-Windows platforms), which is located in the bin subdirectory of the Agent Controller installation directory.

You can use this JRE to run Agent Controller, and this JRE will be used by Agent Controller to launch Java applications. You can, however, configure Agent Controller to a use separate JRE for each of these functions. For details, refer to Agent Controller help topic "Configuring Applications to be launched by Agent Controller."

Starting and stopping Agent Controller

On non-Windows platforms, the Agent Controller process (ACServer ) does not start automatically. You must start it yourself.

For more information on this topic, see the file geting _started.html, which is located in the Agent Controller installation directory.

On Windows platforms, the Agent Controller process also does not start automatically. On Windows platforms, you can choose to start Rational Agent Controller as either an application or as a service. Instructions for starting Rational Agent Controller are available in the Getting Started Guide at <Rational Agent Controller installation directory>\getting _started.html.

Using the Agent Controller security feature

The following list contains hints and tips for using the Agent Controller security feature on all platforms:

Uninstalling Agent Controller

Agent Controller can only be removed using IBM Installation Manager's "Uninstall" function. You need to start Installation Manager and select Rational Agent Controller 8.3 to be uninstalled.

Uninstalling Agent Controller silently

If you do not have access to the GUI on your computer, or if you do not want to run the Installation Manager GUI, then you can follow these steps to uninstall Rational Agent Controller 8.3 silently.

To silently uninstall Agent Controller:

  1. Log in as Administrator (or root).
  2. Create a new text file (for example, responsefile_uninstall.txt) on your computer and copy into the file the contents of the uninstallation response file provided below that corresponds to your platform:
    Tip:
You can also choose to use the response file RAC83_<platform>_uninstall.xml located in the RAC\disk1 directory where you extracted the installation files.
  3. Between the <uninstall modify='false'> and </uninstall> tags, delete the XML tag that starts with the text <offering profile and replace the tag with the offering profile for your operating system as shown in the following table:
Table 4. Offering profile information for supported operating systems

Rolling back Agent Controller to a previously installed version

You can remove an update to Rational Agent Controller and revert to a previous version by using the Roll Back Packages wizard of IBM Installation Manager.

When you use the rollback feature, Installation Manager uninstalls the updated resources and reinstalls the resources from the previous version. You can only roll back one version level at a time. For more information, see the Installation Manager online help or Information Center.

Note:
You cannot roll back Rational Agent Controller, Version 8.3 on Windows or Linux operating systems.

During the rollback process, Installation Manager must access files from the earlier version of the package. By default, the files needed to roll back to the previously installed version are stored on your computer when you update to a new package. If you have deleted the files that are saved locally for rollback or cleared the Save files for rollback check box in the Preferences page (File -> Preferences -> Files for Rollback) while updating, you will not be able to roll back to the previous version without the media or repositories that were used to install that version of the package.

To revert an update to a previous version of , complete the following steps:

  1. Start IBM Installation Manager.
  2. On the Start page, click Roll Back.
  3. In the Roll Back Packages wizard, from the Package Group Name list, select the package that you want to revert to the previous version and click Next.
  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the rollback.

Rolling back Agent Controller silently

If you do not have access to the GUI on your computer, or if you do not want to run the Installation Manager GUI, then you can follow these steps to roll back Rational Agent Controller 8.3 silently to a previously installed version.

Note:
You cannot roll back Rational Agent Controller, Version 8.3 on Windows or Linux operating systems.

To silently roll back Agent Controller:

  1. Log in as Administrator (or root).
  2. Create a new text file (for example, responsefile_rollback.txt) on your computer and copy into the file the contents of the uninstallation response file provided below that corresponds to your platform:
  3. Between the <rollback modify='false'> and </rollback> tags, delete the line beginning with <offering profile and replace it with the following text:
    <offering profile='IBM Rational Agent Controller' version='<previous version ID>' features='' id='com.ibm.rational.agent.controller'/>
where <previous version ID> is the ID the version of Agent Controller you are rolling back to. For example, version='8.2.0.1.20090617_1706'.
  4. Between the <server> and </server> tags, add a line for the repository location of the version that you are rolling back to. For example, if you are rolling back to version 8.2.0.1, then your list of repositories would include the following line:
    <repository location='http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v8/rac/8201/repository/'/>
  5. Save the response file.
  6. At a command line, change to directory where you installed Installation Manager, and run the following command: where <response file> is the path for the response file and <log file> is the path to the log file for the installation results.

Known problems and limitations

This section covers known problems and limitations related to installing and uninstalling Agent Controller. Except where otherwise noted, the following information applies to all operating systems that are supported for Agent Controller.

Agent Controller may fail to start on non-Windows platforms

Agent Controller may fail to start on non-Windows platforms with the following message:

RAServer failed to start.

This failure is usually caused when TCP/IP port 10002 is not free. Agent Controller listens on this port by default. Another process running on the system may be using this port when Agent Controller is started or perhaps Agent Controller was just stopped and then restarted before the port could be released.

If Agent Controller failed to start, you can start it as follows:

Other errors during installation and uninstallation

If you encounter errors during installation or uninstallation, this may be due to the fact that the object files of Agent Controller are loaded by running processes. To ensure the object files can be modified, do the following:

  1. Shut down your Eclipse workbench.
  2. Terminate all java.exe processes that contain either the Java Profiling Agent or the J2EE Request Profiler.
