Updating Rational Agent Controller

If you have Rational Agent Controller, version 8.2.x or version 8.3 already installed on your computer, then you can update to version 8.3.5.

Note:
You cannot update Rational Agent Controller version 8.1.x or earlier to version 8.3.5. If you have version 8.1.x or earlier installed, you should uninstall it and then install version 8.3.5.

To update to Rational Agent Controller, version 8.3.5, you can either access the update files directly from the IBM repository, or you can download the files to your computer for a local repository.

Note:
Typically it is not necessary to download the installation files for the version 8.3.5. However, if you need to download the files for the update to your computer, see: http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg24032832.

Before you begin, ensure that you configured the repository location in Installation Manager.

To update Rational Agent Controller:

  1. Start IBM Installation Manager.
  2. On the main page of Installation Manager, click Update. The Update Packages Wizard starts.

If you do not have the required version of Installation Manager installed, then by default you are prompted to update to the latest version. If this happens, click Yes to update Installation Manager. When the update completes, click OK to restart Installation Manager, and then click Update.

  3. On the first page of the Update Packages wizard, ensure that Version 8.3.5 is selected and then click Next.
  4. Read the license agreement. If you agree to the license terms, select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next.
  5. On the first Features page, click Next.
  6. On the next Features page, choose either a typical installation or a custom installation. Click Next.
  7. Confirm your update summary information and then click Update. The update process starts.
  8. Confirm that the update is successful and click Finish to close Installation Manager.

Setting the runtime environment to use with Agent Controller on workstations

Rational Agent Controller is bundled with a runtime environment for Java technology. The supplied runtime environment is installed in the <installation location>/AgentController/jdk directory.

About this task

In general, Agent Controller works with JVM versions 1.5 and later.

To change the runtime environment used by Agent Controller, run the SetConfig script (SetConfig.bat for Microsoft Windows platforms; SetConfig.sh for non-Windows platforms), which is in the bin subdirectory of the Agent Controller installation directory.

You can use this runtime environment to run Agent Controller, and this runtime environment is used by Agent Controller to launch Java applications. You can, however, configure Agent Controller to a use separate runtime environment for each of these functions. For details, see the Agent Controller help topic "Configuring Applications to be launched by Agent Controller."

Starting and stopping Agent Controller on workstations

On non-Windows workstation operating systems, the Agent Controller process (ACServer ) does not start automatically. You must start it yourself.

For more information about this topic, see the file geting _started.html, which is in the Agent Controller installation directory.

On Windows platforms, the Agent Controller process also does not start automatically. On Windows platforms, you can choose to start Rational Agent Controller as either an application or as a service. Instructions for starting Rational Agent Controller are available in the Getting Started Guide at <Rational Agent Controller installation directory>\getting _started.html.

Note:
Agent Controller might fail to start if TCP/IP port 10002 is not free.

If the port is not free, the following error message displays:

Error starting transport layers, Agent controller exiting.

Agent Controller listens on TCP/IP port 10002 by default. The port might be in use by process, or if Agent Controller was stopped and then restarted in rapid succession, the port might not be released before Agent Controller restarts/

To start Agent Controller after it fails to start:

Working with the Agent Controller security feature

The following list contains hints and tips for using the Agent Controller security feature.

Uninstalling Rational Agent Controller

You can use the Uninstall option in IBM Installation Manager to uninstall Rational Agent Controller

Before you begin

To uninstall a product package, you must log in to the system by using the same user account that you used to install the product package. You must close the programs that you installed by using IBM Installation Manager.

Procedure

  1. Start IBM Installation Manager.
  2. On the Start page, click Uninstall.
  3. On the Uninstall Packages page, from the Installation Packages list, select Rational Agent Controller 8.3.5 and click Next.
  4. On the Summary page, review the list of packages that will be uninstalled and click Uninstall. The Complete page displays when the process finishes.
  5. Click Finish.

Uninstalling Agent Controller silently

If you do not have access to the GUI on your computer, or if you do not want to run the Installation Manager GUI, then you can follow these steps to uninstall Rational Agent Controller 8.3.5 silently.

To silently uninstall Agent Controller:

  1. Create a new text file (for example, responsefile_uninstall.txt) on your computer and copy into the file the contents of the uninstallation response file provided below that corresponds to your platform:
  2. Save the response file.
  3. At a command line, change to the \eclipse\tools subdirectory of the directory where you installed Installation Manager, and run the following command: where <response file> is the path for the response file and <log file> is the path to the log file for the uninstall results.

Rolling back Agent Controller to a previously installed version

You can remove an update to Rational Agent Controller and revert to a previous version by using the Roll Back Packages wizard of IBM Installation Manager.

When you use the rollback feature, Installation Manager uninstalls the updated resources and reinstalls the resources from the previous version. You can only roll back one version level at a time. For more information, see the Installation Manager online help or Information Center.

During the rollback process, Installation Manager must access files from the earlier version of the package. By default, the files needed to roll back to the previously installed version are stored on your computer when you update to a new package. If you have deleted the files that are saved locally for rollback or cleared the Save files for rollback check box in the Preferences page (File > Preferences > Files for Rollback) while updating, you will not be able to roll back to the previous version without the media or repositories that were used to install that version of the package.

To revert an update to a previous version of , complete the following steps:

  1. Start IBM Installation Manager.
  2. On the Start page, click Roll Back.
  3. In the Roll Back Packages wizard, from the Package Group Name list, select the package that you want to revert to the previous version and click Next.
  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard to complete the rollback.

Rolling back Agent Controller silently

If you do not have access to the GUI on your computer, or if you do not want to run the Installation Manager GUI, then you can follow these steps to roll back Rational Agent Controller 8.3.5 silently to a previously installed version.

To silently roll back Agent Controller:

  1. Log in as Administrator (or root).
  2. Create a new text file (for example, responsefile_rollback.txt) on your computer and copy into the file the contents of the uninstallation response file provided below that corresponds to your platform:
  3. Between the <rollback modify='false'> and </rollback> tags, delete the line beginning with <offering profile and replace it with the following text:
    <offering profile='IBM Rational Agent Controller' version='<previous version ID>' features='' id='com.ibm.rational.agent.controller'/>
where <previous version ID> is the ID the version of Agent Controller you are rolling back to. For example, version='8.2.0.1.20090617_1706'.
  4. Between the <server> and </server> tags, add a line for the repository location of the version that you are rolling back to. For example, if you are rolling back to version 8.2.0.1, then your list of repositories would include the following line:
    <repository location='http://download.boulder.ibm.com/ibmdl/pub/software/rationalsdp/v8/rac/8201/repository/'/>
  5. Save the response file.
  6. At a command line, change to directory where you installed Installation Manager, and run the following command: where <response file> is the path for the response file and <log file> is the path to the log file for the installation results.
