Examining your network of systems

Before setting up your systems to use time management, you need to examine your systems with respect to which time zone to use and whether your systems meet the proper hardware and software requirements necessary to make time adjustments.

You can use the time zones and time adjustment functions in combination with one another or separately.

If you plan on using the time zones function of the IBM® i operating system, you need to determine the time zone to use for each system. One single physical system can be divided into logical systems (partitions) that use different time zones.

If you plan on using a time maintenance application, the system must meet the proper hardware and software requirements needed to use the time adjustment function of IBM Navigator for i. To make time adjustments, you must use IBM i V5R3, or later.

When you examine your systems, consider the following questions:

  • What time zone are the users of the system in?
  • What time zone do you want the jobs to run with? The job's time is equivalent to the system time that is derived from the time zone.
  • Have the system met the proper hardware and software requirements to use a time maintenance application to make time adjustments?

After you have evaluated each system's time zone needs and system requirements for time adjustments, you can set each system's time zone.
