Getting started with IBM i communications
The system can use many different networking technologies. Supported protocols include TCP/IP, APPC, APPN, HPR, Remote workstation, and asynchronous and binary synchronous communications.
APPC, APPN, and HPR
Systems Network Architecture (SNA) includes the layered logical structure, formats, protocols, and operational sequences that are used for transmitting information units through networks. Using APPC, APPN, and HPR is an example of implementing SNA.
Ethernet
Ethernet on the System i platform supports TCP/IP, Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking (APPN), Advanced Program-to-Program Communication (APPC), retail, finance, host, and remote workstation.
OptiConnect
OptiConnect is an IBM System i system area network (SNA) that provides high-speed connectivity between multiple systems in a local environment with wide area network (WAN) and local area network (LAN) technologies.
