Introduction to workload management

The installation of the IBM® InfoSphere® Information Server engine tier installs the InfoSphere DataStage® components, including executables and configuration files, that are required to use the workload management system on an engine system.

Using the workload management system on an engine system involves these components:

Workload management queues

The workload management system uses a set of user-defined queues to control the starting of parallel and server jobs. When a job is started, it is submitted to a designated queue. The queue to which a job is submitted can be specified for that job, or it can be inherited from the project that contains the job, or it can be the default queue.

Workload management system policies

The workload management system uses a set of system policies to determine whether another job should be allowed to start processing. The workload management queues are used to determine which specific job is allowed to start processing.

Workload management predefined queues

A number of workload management queues are predefined, some of which are used by product modules in IBM InfoSphere Information Server. The following workload management queues are predefined:
Table 1. Predefined workload management queues
Queue name Description
ISD Used by InfoSphere Information Services Director
IA Used by IBM InfoSphere Information Analyzer
DataClick Used by IBM InfoSphere Data Click
LowPriorityJobs Low priority queue
MediumPriorityJobs Medium priority queue
HighPriorityJobs High priority queue
