Customizing labels and icons for items and categories

A solution implementer can customize the labels and icons used for entities managed in a catalog or a hierarchy. By default, the label item and category respectively are used by the user interface for these entities. A solution implementer can define one or more specifications of icons and labels to be used for a given type of business entity managed in their catalogs or hierarchies. Each of these types of business entity specifications are a domain entity specification.

Domain entities are specified in an XML file. These domains can then be assigned to a catalog or hierarchy, whose entries indicate the assigned domain entities. A domain specification assigned to a catalog or hierarchy applies to all of the items or categories in that container. A solution implementer can also choose to associate different domains to different entries within the same container.

Domain entities can be assigned to an individual entry (item or a category) within a container (catalog or a hierarchy), in which case these will override those derived from the container. Thus, multiple domain entity types can be associated to items or categories of the same catalog or the same hierarchy. Each domain entity also has icons specified in the XML spec.

To customize labels and icons for multiple domain entities, perform the following steps:
  1. Identify the business domains for the entities your solution will manage in the catalogs or hierarchies. For example, if you are managing a set of vendors in a hierarchy, you might want to consider having a 'vendor' domain. Or, if you plan tot manage bundles in a catalog, then you might want to consider having a 'bundle' domain.
  2. Define your domain entities in the XML file. See Defining domain entities in the XML spec for more information.
  3. Generate the CSS files. See Generating a CSS file for the domain entities for more information.
  4. Restart the application server.
  5. Log into the InfoSphere® MDM Collaboration Server user interface and select your type of domain entities. See Associating values to the domain entities using the user interface for more information.
