Exporting virtual MDM metadata for use in InfoSphere DataStage

Before you can use InfoSphere® Information Server, and specifically InfoSphere DataStage®, on virtual MDM data, you must export the MDM metadata to an .xmi file. The metadata provides the base data for using the MDM Connector stage and the MDM samples in InfoSphere DataStage.

Before you begin

You must have a virtual MDM project created in MDM Workbench and access to InfoSphere Metadata Asset Manager.

About this task

Use this procedure to export the metadata of a virtual MDM project. The .xmi file type is used by InfoSphere Information Server version 11.3. This process creates a single .xmi file.

Procedure

  1. In MDM Workbench, open the Export wizard by using one of these options.
    • From the Navigation perspective, right-click on the virtual MDM project folder that you want to export and select Export.
    • From the menu bar, select File > Export.
  2. On the Export window, select Master Data Management > Metadata for IBM InfoSphere Information Server and click Next.
  3. On the Export configuration window, select MDM Model and click Next.
  4. On the next Export configuration window, complete these steps.
    1. Select Export virtual MDM definitions.
    2. Select the Configuration project (such as Person or Organization) from the list.
    3. Enter a Name for your exported model. This name is used in InfoSphere Information Server to identify the model.
    4. Enter a Model identifier. The identifier can include a combination of the MDM host name, the model name, and model version if you want. Unlike the model name, the model identifier must be unique in InfoSphere Information Server and is used to identify imported models. Assets that are imported with an existing model identifier are overwritten in InfoSphere Information Server.
    5. Type the full path to the Target folder where you want to place the export files.
    6. Type the name of the Model export file. This file must have a .xmi extension.
    7. If the .xmi file identified in the previous step already exists and you want to replace it, check the Replace existing files box. If the file exists, and you do not check this box, a message prompts you to check the box or to provide a new file name.
    8. Click Finish.

What to do next

Use the MDM Connector bridge in InfoSphere Metadata Asset Manager to import metadata that represents the MDM data models.
