Product overview

The IBM Security Access Manager hardware appliance helps organizations secure and manage user access and protect applications against fraudulent or unauthorized access.

Step 1: Become familiar with the hardware components

This product offering includes the following components:
Appliance front panel
The front panel of the appliance
Appliance rear panel
The rear panel of the appliance

Step 2: Gather network information

Use either DHCP or a static IP address to configure the appliance. For static IP address users, use this list to record important network information for configuring the appliance:
  • Host name
  • Management IP address
  • Management Subnet Mask
  • Management Gateway
  • Management DNS server

If you use DHCP, the appliance obtains a dynamically leased IP address from the local DHCP server when it is powered on. You can use DHCP discovery software to locate this IP address, or you can connect directly to the appliance console to manage the interface settings. You can also use the LCD panel to view the assigned IP address. The documentation provides details about configuring the IP settings.

Step 3: Prepare to run the Appliance Setup wizard

To configure the initial appliance settings, follow the steps in the Appliance Setup wizard. You can use either the appliance console by connecting the serial console cable to the appliance, or use the local management interface in a web browser. The local management interface offers more advanced configuration options. To use the local management interface, you must browse to the IP address of the appliance. If you do not know the IP address, use the appliance console to connect the appliance and access the Appliance Setup wizard. The following sections provide details about this process.

Step 4: Install the appliance and power it on

  1. Connect both power cords to the appliance to prevent visual warning signals such as flashing lights.
  2. Use the supplied Ethernet cable to connect the network to the management interface. The management ports are on the front panel.
  3. For appliance console users, configure the IP settings by using the supplied serial console cable to connect the appliance to a terminal. The serial console port is on the front panel. If the chosen terminal does not have a serial port, use a serial to USB converter to connect to a USB port.
  4. Turn on the appliance by pressing the power button on the front panel.
  5. When the LCD display reads "IBM Security Access Manager", go to Step 5: Get Started.

Step 5: Get started

  1. Access the appliance console or the local management interface to start the wizard.
  2. Log in as the admin user. The default password is admin. To secure the appliance, change the password immediately when prompted by the wizard.
  3. Use the Appliance Setup wizard to complete the initial configuration. Follow the wizard prompts to configure the required details. The tasks in the wizard include:
    • Reading and accepting the License Agreement. For local management interface users: download and install the license file. You must install a license before you can download firmware updates.
    • Setting the appliance password.
    • Configuring the network, which includes the host name, management interface settings, and DNS configuration.
    • Configuring the date and time settings.
  4. When you complete the basic configuration, a summary screen displays. For local management interface users: review the details on the Completion page and click Complete Setup. For appliance console users: follow the prompts to Accept the configuration.
  5. Download the activation key from your account on Passport Advantage at https://www.ibm.com/software/howtobuy/softwareandservices/passportadvantage.
