IBM Tivoli Utilization sensor

The IBM® Tivoli® Utilization sensor gathers basic metrics from a target system. The sensor uses the TADDM discovery infrastructure to deploy scripts that run system-level performance monitoring commands on the target system. At specified intervals, the sensor gathers data from the target system and provides it to the TADDM server, where operating system metric objects are created.

The IBM Tivoli Utilization sensor provides metrics and a utilization report. You can use this information with the System Connection Topology Report to identify servers that are not used to capacity and do not provide services to other servers.

Prerequisites

For the sensor to discover a target system, the target system must have the following commands installed in the default location for the respective operating system:
  • compress command
  • netstat command
  • sadc command
  • sar command
On target systems that are running the following operating systems, the following respective prerequisites must be met:
  • Linux
    • The compress command must be available.
    • The netstat command must be available.
    • The sar command must be available.
    • The sadc command must be available.
  • Solaris
    • The compress command must be available.
    • The netstat command must be available.
    • The sar command must be available.
  • AIX
    • The compress command must be available.
    • The netstat command must be available.
    • The sar command must be available.
    • To run the sar command, the TADDM service account must be part of the adm group.
  • HP-UX
    • The compress command must be available.
    • The netstat command must be available.
    • The sar command must be available.
    • To schedule cron and at jobs, the TADDM service account must be added to the cron.allow and at.allow files.
You must copy the following JAR files to the $COLLATION_HOME/osgi/plugins/com.ibm.cdb.discover.sensor.sys.utilization_version/lib directory:
  • db2jcc.jar
  • oracle-jdbc-9.2.jar

Limitations

The sensor is intended for short-term use (for example, a maximum of one month of use) to analyze servers and identify consolidation targets. The sensor can be used only for the firewall zone in which the TADDM server resides. The use of an anchor server is not supported.

Over a longer period of time, for determining server availability, performance, and utilization, or for discovering applications that span firewall zones, use the IBM Tivoli Monitoring product.
