System Manager Listener Java API Terminology

The following terms are used throughout the FileNet® System Manager Listener Java™ API:

Term Definition
Listener Software that offers the application a standard API for providing performance data, including the ability to optionally accumulate and aggregate that data and send it to a Manager for analysis and storage.
Manager The central clearing house for performance data in the IBM® System Dashboard for Enterprise Content Management / Listener relationship. Each Manager can connect to one or more Listeners and retrieve performance data periodically. The Manager summarizes and stores this data and makes it available in various forms to the ultimate consumers of the data, such as standard management consoles.
Application (also Product) A FileNet product to monitor for system performance, which as a result is regarded as a managed resource. For example, Content Engine or Process Engine.
Event An occurrence in the application that may possess attributes of interest to the performance statistics of the application. An example of an attribute of interest in an event is the time it takes to execute the associated code. Conversely, an attribute that is not of interest would be the duration of an event counter, such as the number of logins or the number of retrievals of documents.
Operation A significant occurrence in an application whose execution duration is both measurable and of interest to the performance statistics of the application.
Aggregation Interval The interval in seconds over which the Listener accumulates performance data before sending a statistical summary to the Manager.
