ADR263E
(xxx)-mmmm(yy), NOT ENOUGH FREE SPACE DSCBS AVAILABLE

Explanation

During a DEFRAG or CONSOLIDATE run, there were not enough free space DSCBs available to rebuild the free space information to reflect the free space on the volume. While performing the appropriate application programmer's response will fix the volumes free space information, a subsequent run can still encounter the same problem if more free spaces are created than can fit into the number of available entries for the available format-5 or format-7 DSCBs.

System action

In the VTOC, the DS4DOSBT and the DS4EFVLD bits are left in a state to indicate that the free space is invalid for the volume. The return code is set to 8.

Operator response

None.

System programmer response

To prevent this error from occurring on a subsequent run, convert the volume's VTOC to an indexed VTOC with the ICKDSF BUILDIX command.

Programmer response

Allocate a temporary data set so that DADSM can rebuild the free space information. Then, perform an IEHLIST on the volume to verify the volume is in a usable state. If the IEHLIST still reports a problem, perform an ICKDSF REFORMAT on the volume. While these steps will fix the current volume's free space DSCBs, subsequent runs of the DEFRAG or the CONSOLIDATE command can result in receiving this message again.
