Special end-of-volume conditions

z/OS DFSMS Using Magnetic Tapes
SC23-6858-00

The following conditions signal the end of the volume:
  • The drive signals to the system that it is nearing the end of the tape.
    • On a reel, the system detects the end-of-tape reflective marker.
    • On a cartridge, internal mechanisms sense the end of the tape.
  • The application program issues an FEOV macro.

The EOV routine writes the trailer labels as described above. If the drive signal occurs while the system is writing the trailer labels, the EOV or the close routine continues to write the trailer labels. In both cases, the data set can be read or overwritten normally.

If the system is writing header labels, and the drive signals that it is nearing the end of the tape, the system:
  • Writes the new header label group
  • Allows the user to write one record
  • Writes the new trailer label group
  • Performs volume switching
