Input processing for password-protected data sets

z/OS DFSMS Using Magnetic Tapes
SC23-6858-00

The system asks the operator or TSO user to enter the correct password for input processing of a password-protected data set. The password is verified in the system's password data set. This password data set contains the data set name, the password, and a protection-mode indicator. The data set name for Version 3 or 4 generation data sets does not include the .GxxxxVyy suffix. The protection-mode indicator is set to permit either read/write or read-only operations. Processing is terminated if either of the following situations occur:
  • The operator or TSO terminal user does not supply the correct password in two attempts.
  • The password record for the data set to be opened does not exist in the password data set.

z/OS DFSMSdfp Advanced Services describes the protection feature and discusses how to create and maintain the password data set.

Note: Password protection for a tape data set in an IBM automated tape library, or manual tape library, is not supported. In such tape libraries, the only security protection for the tape data set is via RACF.
