Message considerations

This chapter discusses the types of messages DFSORT produces and explains how to print messages and control statements, write messages to the master console, and find control statement coding errors.

DFSORT produces three types of messages:

Critical error messages, which report and describe problems requiring programmer action to correct (explained in Informational and Error Messages).
Informational messages, which provide information only and require no programmer action (explained in Informational and Error Messages).
Diagnostic messages, which provide additional information useful in debugging and tuning (explained in Diagnostic messages).

Different messages might be issued for the same error situation, depending upon which DFSORT technique is used.
