Edit primary commands

Primary commands affect the entire data set being edited, whereas line commands usually affect only a single line or block of lines. To enter a primary command, either:

Type the command on the command line and press Enter, or
Press the function key to which the command is assigned

Most primary commands can be abbreviated. In fact, many can be typed as a single letter, such as L for LOCATE or F for FIND. In this topic, the syntax diagram for each command shows the allowable abbreviations, if any. For a complete list of command abbreviations, see Abbreviations for Commands and Other Values.

Each command description consists of:

Syntax: A syntax diagram for coding the command, including a description of any required or optional operands.
Description: A summary of the function and operation of the command. This definition also refers to other commands that can be used with this command.
Example: Sample usage of the command.
