Converting to a new tape technology

If you are converting from an old tape technology to a new tape technology, identify whether the old tapes have the same logical device type as the new ones. Then mark the old tapes full so that they are no longer available for output consideration. With DFSMShsm support of the 3590E device, you do not have to perform this step, because DFSMShsm can distinguish 3592, 3590E, 3590B, 3590H, and VTS tapes from other type cartridges. However, DFSMShsm does not differentiate between other hardware that has a common logical device type.

Use the following command to identify the old backup tapes:

LIST TTOC SELECT (BACKUP NOTFULL)

Use the following command to mark the old tapes as full:

DELVOL volser BACKUP(MARKFULL)
