An address system is a hierarchical system that creates relationships between addresses. You can use address systems to determine the address ancestry throughout the hierarchy of location addresses.
In the Locations application, locations often require parent locations to illustrate a relationship between the locations. Locations with a service address can help you identify where the customer is located and help group multiple assets as child records of the location. If a parent location has a service address and belongs to an address system, the address system is used to assign service addresses to child records. You can then use the service address to identify the location of the child records on the map. This capability applies also to assets that are child records of the location.
You can assign only one system within a site as the address system, so you must decide which system determines address ancestry.
Breaker H344, a circuit breaker at a substation, is a location that belongs to the Bedford site. The Bedford site uses the BEDADDR system as the address system. Breaker H344 has a power pole child location. The power pole has a transformer child asset. If you use the Open Drilldown action, you can see the complete location hierarchy for breaker H344.
