Routing outbound email
Administrators can route outbound email through an external SMTP server.
About this task
The following are some reasons to relay outbound mail
via an external SMTP server:
- Integration with compliance archiving solutions
- Screening messages through a data loss protection system
- Complex enterprise mail routing requirements
Use the SMTP routing to control outbound traffic by defining
a server name for IBM® Web Mail Cloud.
This server name enables Web Mail Cloud to route
outbound email that originates with users from the organization. Routing
can be done at the domain or user level. To implement this option,
you must provide the following information:
- The host name or IP address of the outbound SMTP server
- Verification that the server is properly configured. For example, make sure that email messages sent from the Web Mail Cloud outbound mail transfer agent (MTA) are accepted by this host for mail relay.
Note: In
order to avoid a delay in email delivery, the volume of outgoing customer
email is monitored. If an unusual volume of outbound email is detected,
outbound email is throttled. Make sure you set sender controls for
large distribution lists and avoid sending bulk emails within a short
period of time.
Procedure
After you have this information, you can configure the outbound mail gateway for all users or for individual users:
