Enabling Office Integration

Using IBM Sametime® Office Integration with Microsoft Office allows you to collaborate, create meetings, and chat with co-workers from Microsoft Office.

Sametime Integration with Microsoft Office offers the following features:
  • Sametime Connect Client integrator for Microsoft Office
  • Microsoft Outlook calendar availability
  • Sametime Connect Client integrator for Microsoft Outlook
  • Sametime Meeting Integrator for Microsoft Outlook
  • Sametime Connect Client integrator for SharePoint

Office Integration is included in the Sametime Connect Client and Sametime Embedded Client for Windows, but you must enable it before users can take advantage of this feature. The steps in the procedure show the high-level order of installation. Not all steps must occur manually.

Procedure

  1. Install Microsoft Office.
  2. Install Sametime Office Integration. This is accomplished when you install the Sametime Connect Client or Sametime Embedded Client for Windows.

    Microsoft Windows Vista and Windows 7 clients must run the installation program as an administrator and, when prompted, consent to run the program with elevated privileges. This allows proper creation of new application icons on the Windows Desktop or in the Windows Start menu and ensures proper creation of global registry keys. After installation, log on as a regular user, to restore the default security for the client.

  3. Configure Sametime Connect Client clients to use the Office Integration features.
    1. Download and extract the plugin_customization.ini file.
    2. Open the plugin_customization.ini file in a text editor:

      Linux

      /etc/ibm/sametime-connect/plugin_customization.ini

      Mac

      install_mpkg\deploy\plugin_customization.ini

      Windows

      install-kit-base-dir\deploy\plugin_customization.ini

    3. Add the following settings to the plugin_customization.ini file:
      com.ibm.collaboration.realtime/startBroker=TRUE
      If you installed Microsoft Office 64-bit, add the following line to the plugin_customization.ini file for the Sametime client:
      com.ibm.collaboration.realtime.oi/InstallX64Binaries=TRUE 
    4. Set the following Sametime Connect Client client preferences as applicable:
  4. Install or upgrade theSametime client on user workstations so they can take advantage of the new features.
  5. In Microsoft Office, enable the Sametime SmartTags Recognizer.

    The Sametime SmartTags Recognizer reads names in the user's buddy list or in email format and treats them as Sametime contacts.

    1. Click File > Options > Proofing, and then click AutoCorrect Options.
    2. Select Enable additional actions in the right-click menu if it is not already selected.
    3. In the Available actions list select the following actions:
      • Sametime Contact (Sametime Recognizer)
      • Phone Number (Sametime Phone Number Recognizer)
    4. Click OK.
