IBM® Sametime® on AIX®, Linux,
or Windows requires the use
of an IBM DB2® server. Databases store information about
users, Sametime servers,
configuration settings, and meetings.
About this task
DB2 must be installed
before you begin installing Sametime servers. DB2 Net Search Extender is additionally
required for the Sametime Advanced
Server.
Procedure
- On the computer where you will install DB2, log on as root (AIX or Linux)
or as the system administrator (Microsoft Windows).
- Find the
software packages you need to download.
- Download
the packages.
Note: When choosing a version of DB2 to download, note that Sametime only provides a
Workstation license. Unless you have a separate license for DB2, choose the Workstation install
and apply the License file from Passport Advantage® after you have
installed DB2.
- Extract all downloaded packages.
- From the directory where you extracted the packages, navigate
to the WSER\image directory.
- Start the installation program.

Note: As
a best practice in Windows installations,
do not install DB2 and Sametime files into a directory
path that includes the Program Files directory.
The space in the Program Files directory name
causes problems running some scripts.
- (Windows) Specify
the following directory for the SSH Server installation.
C:\IBM\IBM
SSH Server
Select Autostart the IBM SSH
server at system startup and click Next.
- Select Local user or Domain User account and
complete one of the following according to your operating system:
Make a note of the user name and password you choose. You
will need this information to install
Sametime servers.
Important: Use only alphanumeric characters for the user name
and password; other characters might cause errors.
- Select Use the same account for the remaining
DB2 services and click Next.
- Leave the default selection for Configure DB2 instances and click Next.
- Clear the checkbox for Set up your DB2 server
to send notifications and click Next.
- If you are installing on Linux,
skip this step and proceed to step 20. Select Enable operating
system security and enter the following values:
- DB2 Administrators, Group
name: DB2ADMNS
- DB2 users group, Domain: None
- use local group
- DB2 users group, Group name: DB2USERS
- Click Next.
- Review the summary, then click Install to
start the installation.

What to do next
Install DB2 Net Search
Extender if you plan to install Sametime Advanced Server;
Net Search Extender is only needed for features used by that server.
