IBM Script Portlet V 1.3 overview

The IBM Script Portlet Version 1.3 for IBM® WebSphere® Portal enables a script developer to create portlets for WebSphere Portal with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS.

Note: This documentation is only for the IBM Script Portlet Version 1.3 for WebSphere Portal that you can download from the IBM Collaboration Solutions Catalog. If you use the Script Portlet that is included with WebSphere Portal CF09 and later cumulative fixes, read the Script Portlet section in the WebSphere Portal product documentation.
The Script Portlet V 1.3 is designed for front-end developers to make porting applications to WebSphere Portal easy. You can import an application that you developed already. The components are saved in Web Content Manager. You can also edit the HTML, JavaScript, and CSS in the Script Portlet V 1.3.

The Script Portlet V 1.3 makes it easy to develop portlets with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, without Java or the JSR 286 portlet specification.

The following key WebSphere Portal and IBM Web Content Manager features are available with the Script Portlet V 1.3:

  • Content targeting based on devices or locations
  • Access to user login information
  • Adaptive design that uses conditional rendering
  • Access to shared render parameters, portlet preferences, and live text

The Script Portlet V 1.3 has the following advantages:

  • Users have more autonomy and less dependence on central IT for portlet development, which decreases the time to market.
  • Users need less skill to be productive WebSphere Portal developers.
  • Users control access and workflow processes in enterprise settings.
  • Users can create reusable assets and contents.
  • Users can render existing portlets, such as those developed with IBM Web Experience Factory or IBM Rational Application Developer, on a page with portlets by using Script Portlet V 1.3.
