Creating or augmenting profiles on Linux

You can create new profiles or augment existing IBM® WebSphere® Application Server default profiles or Deployment Manager profiles with IBM WebSphere Portal. You can use the Profile Management Tool (PMT), if supported, to enter all required parameters on a graphical user interface (GUI). The PMT is the preferred method for beginners because it uses automatically created default values. You can also use the manageProfiles command to enter all required parameters on a command line. This method allows you to automate the process. If you have an existing WebSphere Application Server default profile, you must use the manageProfiles command. The PMT interface is not supported for augmentation in this scenario.

About this task

Creating or augmenting a profile requires a profile template, which is used to execute the required actions. The templates can be found in the PortalServer_root/profileTemplates directory. Choose the appropriate file to create or augment your profile:
  • Creating a Portal application server profile on Linux
    The IBM WebSphere Portal installation registers the WebSphere Portal application server profile template with IBM WebSphere Application Server. You can then create new profiles based on the template. You can use the manageprofiles command. You can also use the Profile Management Tool, which is a graphical user interface. The newly created profile's WebSphere Application Server administrator ID and password are set according to the input given. The portal still has the same security and database configurations, including the portal administrator ID and password, as the initial profile used to run the enable-profiles task. If your initial profile was using the Derby database, a fresh copy is automatically created with the new profile. If your initial profile was configured to use a non-Derby database, then all the database domains of the new profile are identically configured. Likewise, any security configurations (like a stand-alone or federated LDAP) that were made before running the enable-profiles task are preserved with the new profile.
  • Creating a Portal custom profile on Linux
    Custom profiles do not contain any servers or applications; they are used as run time environments to create additional cluster members. After creating the profile, the node must be federated into an existing cell. The portal server is added when you add the additional nodes to an existing cluster.
  • Augmenting a stand-alone default profile with WebSphere Portal on Linux
    You can augment an existing IBM WebSphere Application Server default profile running in a stand-alone (non-federated) environment with IBM WebSphere Portal. The augmentation adds the WebSphere Portal configurations, applications, and application server that were saved from the baseline WebSphere Portal configuration.
  • Augmenting a Deployment Manager profile on Linux
    An existing Deployment Manager profile can be augmented with the configuration settings required to set up an IBM WebSphere Portal cluster.
